I'm getting ready to start up my own AIRLINE and bring back the Glory days of flying - like it used to be , as well all knew it ! I'm goin to call my New Airline - Crash Airways, and our motto will be have a Crashing good time !
What happened to the service? What happened to the fares? It costs less to fly in today's dollars than it did back then. Heck, in the 20's a ticket from Chicago to LA was $120.
No one will see three choices of entrees in coach because no one wants to pay for it. If you sample random fares from the 70s and adjust them for inflation, they would be considerably higher than most fares today. Come on people. You want the service? Pay for it. Another possibility is NetJets(R). You'll probably pay at least $250,000 just to buy into the program. Then you pay an annual membership fee plus extra for actual flight time.
The people who run/own airlines are greedy and they don't treat their pilots or other employees very well... most of all the passengers aren't treated well either. I remember when I was a kid, you got dressed up for a plane ride. Pilots and crew members were looked up to like dignitaries. 30 years ago, flying was a big deal. These airlines just don't care anymore. No wonder why no one wants to fly anymore. Where's the flare?
my dad worked for TWA all his life. thank you for posting the video. I remember as a kid, going up and down the stairs. they had a buffet upon landing. it was heaven. I forgot how it used to be, in a way, I'm sorry to remember give what flying is now!!!!
I flew TWA in the 70's as a kid from JFK to LAX. I remember with Trans World Service you had a choice of THREE meals in coach and only 4 across seating in the center section of the Boeing 747 instead of 5. I guess those dats are gone and so unfortunately is the remarkable Mr. Sellers.
Great commercial! Flew as a kid to LAX on TWA in the 70's with Trans World Service. Imagine a choice of THREE meals in coach. We'll never see those days again or the remarkable Mr. Sellers, God Bless.
@Concordelover (Was better.) Not according to celebrities, Hollywood stars and anyone who wanted schedule reliability and great service. I flew as a pilot for TWA for 34 years and rode as a pass rider on Pan Am many times. The Pan Am people were great but their company was strapped for cash the last 30 years of their existence and it showed.
Both companies offered far superior service than ones operating today. RIP.
Ah...the good old days of flying when the airlines competed on their service. Nowadays, it's everyman for himself, 29 inches of 'leg' room, and over worked flight attendants. I fear we will never have the good old days back again!
The genius behind these late 1970s commercials was the ad agency, Wells, Rich & Greene. Mary Wells-Lawrence (married to Braniff president, Harding Lawrence) was able to convince Sellers and the TWA Advertising Department to create a line of commercials with Sellers playing "Thrifty McTravel", a bargain-hunting Scotsman. Unfortunately, TWA went through some executive changes and the series was immediately dropped.
Ha Ha Ha!!! Hee hee hee!!! ha ha hee hee!!! ...ahhhhhhhhhhh!!! Sorry. I'm okay now. Mr. Sellers always caused me to CRACK-UP! All he had to do is look at me and and I would just lose it!!! There were not too many actors/comedians that could do that!!! He was a ONE -Of-A-KIND! We miss him!!! THANKS for the Commercials!!! It brings back great times and memories! Praise GOD!
I see, thank you. I don't know much fact about Hughes in his later years. He was so larger than life it's difficult to imagine TWA without him. Of course he was gone from this earth in '76. Thank you for the look at Sellers, btw.
"Great footage, Carlo, excitingly underexposed" lol!

Mr. Sellars was a lovely man and a frequent passenger on the Polar out of LAX. It was a privilege to meet him. R.I.P., Peter!

Peter Sellers, that's classic.

Dear All,
I have some question about psychology:
Why do we love flying? What do we enjoy air travel? Why do we like to see aeroplanes? Why do we want to design new airplanes?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm.

That was a nice touch using the tail of the jet to end the commercial, don't you think?

@simongbb7 and US carriers have stopped using B747 on domestic flights like coast-to coast,mainland-Hawaii etc
am1966ath 1 year ago
@simongbb7 They treated you like a celebrity back then. It was so fabulous that you even needed an agent to come along with you.

Did Howard Hughes have anything to do with wanting Sellars for his commercials in 1970?
KahnBB6 5 years ago
No, he didn't. Mr. Hughes sold his TWA stock in 1966 for $546m.
