I was his driver when he came to the Glasgow International Folk Festival in 1995, he signed a "South Coast" CD for me (which I'll never part with, so don't even ask!). He's a hell of a good guy, listened to me play my music and seemed to genuinely enjoy it. I like to think he did anyway.
most amazing performer, seen him once in the flesh, gives me chills, where can i get this cussin album!? checked out all the record shops in town, scowerd the internet! WHERE IS IT!??
His CD, Friends of Mine, is just great, duets with others, like Townes, Jerry Jeff, Emylou, etc., his song, Me And Billy The Kid is the best I've ever heard, ever, not to be forgotten.
The man introduced Bob Dylan to Woody Guthrie, just before Woody died, the man is a legend in his own time.
Glad you posted this - I was at this screening/performance. Was wearing a Peterbilt (big rig trucks) hat from a TV show I was shooting at the time. Jack peered out around the line of folks wanting to shake his hand. Peered around again. Finally he said: "You drive a Pete?" "No sir. But I do shoot a TV show where they work on Petes an awful lot." "I used to drive 'em all. Petes, Kens. Wasn't research, I needed the work."
We talked more about trucks and guitars and I was deeply satisfied.
ramblin jack is a scary drunk. I've met him and I know he'll never read this comment, so there....... Oh, but he does not drink 'Wild Turkey' anymore, only 'Jim Beam'.
It's a fine version of a classic I've seen RJE perform several times, from San Diego State Backdoor to Mill Valley's Sweetwater and Petaluma's Mystic Theater. But what happened to the end of the song here? (I have driven through Jolon, or what is left of it, leaving Hwy 101 nr King City heading toward Big Sur through Hunter Liggett military reservation. It's an interesting drive to say the least.
I was told I could play his custom guitar you see here if I was really careful. He went to sleep early in our guest bedroom because he had an early flight the next day. Around 1:30 AM I brought it out to my dad's garage where his music studio is and started tuning it up. I was so excited to say I played his guitar I was freaking out and then I broke the D string.
Jack stayed at my house this weekend. He's a super nice guy. My dad, Gene LaFond, knows him through Bob Dylan and drove him from the Twin Cities to Hibbing for Dylan Days. After that was done with his gig there he came to stay at my house for two nights. He played this song and Don't Think Twice on my couch. It was unreal.
He does a tune called cup of coffee, and it has something to do with sleeping on someones couch, but keeping one foot on the floor, cause thats his clutch foot. "If I put that on the couch Ill never get up". Ahhhh.
The documentary made tells the story of this living legend. At 20 yrs old Jack toured with the great Woody Guthrie, woody 40, they cruised around the country in car, Played here and there...
After a show in Kelowna, July 25 04 he came out to a pub and told us some stories of the old days....God bless jack, hope all is well, Robert smith said to say hello. Like the Corb Lund tune you played on!
On the same trip, my family had a friend who was renting a cabin from Henry Miller on Partington Ridge. It was next door to Miller's cabin and they took us on a tour. My big recollection of Millers place (he was away and never moved back) was seeing a book called "Sex Over 60". It had all blank pages.
The Barrancas, as in "...the lion still rules the barranca..." are the ravines running down the west side of the mountains, the "lion" is the California mountain lion, Felis concolor, or cougar or puma and are still common in the area.
It is about Big Sur (Big South) and Ross was the descendant of an old Big Sur family. Jolon (spelled Cholon in some versions), where he won his wife in a card game, is east of Big Sur in the Hunter Liggett military reservation. There is nothing there now but i assume there was once at least a saloon.
I first heard "South Coast" in 1960 at Deegen's Big Sur Inn, sung by a lady who had worked at Deegens' the previous year and organized a bunch of us to rent the creek house for a week. The lady who wrote it, along with others, (Lillian Ross) had just died the year before.

His real name is Elliot Charles Adnopoz of Eastern European Ashkenazi extraction. He followed Woody Guthrie around for years, copied everything about him, then set out to make a career. Forerunner of the sexual revolution ( i.e. the assault on monogamy), the original "Jewish Cowboy".
I've been Ramblin Jack fan since older brother turned me on to him in 1969. He brought home "Young Brigham" and that was all she wrote. I still love to sit with the lights off and listen to 912 greens.
Did you ever stand and shiver, just because you were lookin at a river?
I first heard Jack in about 1962. I went out and bought a Gibson j45. Never had no regrets. I havent much talent but Jack was my idol. Heard him about 2 years ago in Albany NY. He did a really great job. I know for a few years he kind of didnt do too well. But recently just great. After the show I went up to him and told him Id been hearing him for 40 years. He told me to have my ears examined.
That's "South Coast" He's singing about the mountains south of Monterey, California. Robinson Jeffers country.
Jack's getting a little stiff, old, but his voice is much stronger than it was for a few years. Wish he was really my role model..I've been hacking away at his music for forty years, while operating a swivel chair.
45 years for me. It was 1962 and I was in high school. Railroad Bill was the 1st song I learned, then candy man, then the cookoo. Ive got a lot of other musical heroes now, but he reamains one.
Does any one have the original recording?

One of Jack's best. Like all his covers, he makes it his own.

the chords shapes are em,am,em,c,b7,em,c,b7,em..basically

Do you know who wrote "South Coast"? I thought Mr. Jack recorded the song in 90s?
