This film is great and utterly draining as well, the movie slowly wittles at Aguirre as it does the viewer. Not in a bad way it's just one of the most in tune I've felt with a movie
Sorry A.O., but the film has absolutely nothing to do with Vietnam, just because it's 1972 would be an educated assumption by most, but Herzog doesn't align himself with politics or worldly opinions, he is his own soldier.
@hpdrinker I agree. I just rented this and watched the entire film with commentary by Herzog and he doesn't mention Vietnam a single time that I can remember.
It always amazes me how natural post-dubbed films can be when they're great. Normally you'd think it would detract from the movie, but films like this and those of Fellini suggest otherwise. Great filmaking is great filmaking, no matter how primitive the technology used is.
I am german-american (family in milwaukee since 1890 ) besides that I love the movie deeply...it has helped me greatly practice my ethnic language skills!.../ @ milwaukee
actually i've got the english dubbed version, and though the voice actor for Kinski in my opinion has great dramatic flair, you can sense that somewhere the english language doesn't quite reflect the acting involved and detracts from the immediacy of the film. you can't really substitute for the original actors' voices (even if dubbed after the filming), let alone Kinski's in any language.
That isn't actually Kinski speaking in the original version either, it's the german actor Gerd Martienzen- Kinski wanted more money than Herzog had to record his voice in post-sound.
Yep ive got this film, one of my favorites, German film makers arnt afraid to go with the flow with movie making ( bring events outside the script into the movie. The music is grate. The main caracture gives it his all, ( so to speek ).
I've seen this movie several times. I've also seen several other of Herzog's movies. I don't like the whole outdoors documentary feel of his movies. They look like they were filmed by just some random person with a videocamera.
I said I don't like the outdoors documentary feel of his movieS, not just this one. Certain directors have one or more trademarks in their movies or in their directing style, and in Herzog's case, the "outdoors documentary feel" of his movies is one his trademarks.
Kinski makes Jack from the Shining look normal

Vietnam? What?
I think you're confusing Aguirre with Apocalypse Now. Which is also a film adaptation of Heart of Darkness moved out of Africa.

Aguirre was literally scaring the poop out of that monkey in the final shot.

The brutality and indifference of nature, exactly. But I'm sure herzog meant aguirre's nature; not the amazon's.

The german language might be a bit of distraction. However, it looks like a very interesting movie.
