I hate how everybody says that Nikki Blonsky is better than Marissa Jaret Winokur in the role of Tracy. First of all, Marissa is breathless because she's up there dancing and, with myself being involved on musical theatre, its difficult to dance and sing at the same time without flaws. Nikki Blonsky could dance all she wanted in the movie because she pre recorded her bit and lip synced the whole thing. And now it seems like I'm covering up for Marissa's voice... but I'm not.

@jooodlez : u're right. We made the play here in perú, and we couldn't almost breathe! For us the chorists and the actors it was the hardest song to sing, we could make it in 5 months of practice or more, and even then there were some actors that couldn't sing it while dancing (That was what the chorists were for) :)

This song is a perfect example of why movie musicals are dubbed. It is so hard to dance and sing and not sound like you are being thrown around in a bag! They did a great job though, here....whereas on stage, when they let loose, you noted more the warbling voices while dancing...(here it was toned down)! Matthew Morrison, though...that HAIR! If he had that hair now in GLEE< then I could imagine Sue busting him for it. Also a string bean, but now, superman as seen in the 'Rocky Horror" episode.

First of all, anyone in show business knows it is REALLY hard to sing and dance at the same time. And with a song like this where there's barely an opportunity to take a breath, I call this performance impressive! The 2007 movie they were lipsinging so they were able to pull off a lot of complicated dance moves! You should be saying bravo to these people! I'd like to see any of you pull that off!

I started to go to a musical course this winter and I love it. We acted Hairspray (with Italian song) on the 1st June. And, God, It was exciting and difficult at the same time!

Like you said, it isn't easy sing and dance at the same time, cause you are concentrated on the lyrics's song and you can go wrong with a step!

And also, the protagonists had to learn a lot of stuff!

@lilblakblood Jooodlez didn't mean they were lipsyncing to THIS version, he/she meant they were lipsyncing along to the version that they recorded for the soundtrack to the movie, which is what all movie musicals do (with VERY few exceptions). For example, when they filmed YCSTB for the movie, the song they recorded for the soundtrack was played and they danced along to it and pretended they were singing it "live".

I have to agree, my group and I did a Hairspray Production publicly and I was Link Larkin.. during that scene, we actually used the movie choreography and while singing it was literally breathtaking. We even need to figure out which part of the lyrics that we HAVE to take a SHORT breath. With head mic on, we had to breath slowly to avoid breath noises to the sound system during non-singing parts. It was challenging for me and for the rest of us. But it was fun indeed :)

Lol, I wouldn't say that. the casting was pretty ironic. I was initially auditioned for the role of Corny Collins, and there was someone else auditioning for Link. But after the whole audition finished, the producer ends up casting me for Link and that person for Corny, instead.

We were hesitant with our characters and what was expected of us. But Link's character ends up growing in me, as Corny was growing in him. So we ended up embracing our characters and had fun.
