  • the only reason the m3 won is because its barely doing any work, while the prius is reving like crazy trying to keep up

  • the pryus, the fucking prius you fuckers, if you've ever driven a prius you know its slow (dangerously slow while trying to merge on the highway) plus new new m3 is just to sick to turn down, its the ultimate way to flip the bird to mother earth

  • Useless test !

The whole purpose of hybrid vehicles is to reuse energy from when breaking in etc

Driving continously you would expect the Prius to be "as good" as others - but not better.

BTW BMW is really really good of doing fun enginges which are not thirsty )

    /K

  • dude its top gear.

    there not exactly scientific.

they dont eliminate all the variables.

  • Assuming they were, as they say, "driving as fast as possible", there's no doubt they were using the regenerative braking feature thoroughly. Basically, the car sucks in almost every way and doesn't provide the staggering fuel economy that be necessary to justify a) the price and b) basically everything else about it. It's only redeeming quality is that it's a stepping stone to plug-in cars and is frequently converted to one. But I still don't want it. Give me a plug-in hybrid M3. :)

  • that was stupid..LOL

  • Tossers. Clarkson you wanker. I should snog you

  • He'll hit you back you know?

  • ahahaha but the prius did in "flat" high revs = more fuel used.

  • is not a korean car is a jap car.. lol

  • Study he cites was funded by Detroit and was already widely discredited.

Also, I drive the Prius on the highway every day and I get 40+ MPG. They fucked something up.

  • You can stereo-type just about anything. While I do agree that there are a lot of ignorant, stupid people in America, there are plenty of stupid people in every country.

  • Another reason why there is no replacement for displacement. The BIGGER engine didn't have to try nearly as hard to go the same speed as the smaller engine. Its not injecting as much fuel/stroke. Why the hell do you think a Corvette can get over 25 mpg?

  • If I owned an M3 I wouldn't care less about MPG. Prius is possibly the gayest car ever produced. Seriously uncool!

  • ...and that is simply your own opinion.

  • I have stopped watching Top Gear completely after this as JC intro'd with two urban myths. One about battery production and the other that there is a net negative long term environmental impact of the Prius. I wrote to JC and got a one line answer "I don't care."

It is extremely irresponsible when you have mass media access to repeat baseless and damaging non-science.

I have asked for a BBC review of this segment.

  • watch some more reviews of the prius... not only clarkson says that.

For some reason i highly doupt you wrote to Jeremy Clarson and the fact he answered to you

  • WTF?! What are you, some sort of psychic professional liar??? Just keeping hating you Turkish/Greek/Cypriot half-wit.

  • So what are you? A professional moron? Stay on topic please and don't try to offend my nationality especially if you are an Aussie rofl. You would wish to have half the history of Greeks so stfu.

  • No fair! The Bimmer was benefiting from slipstreaming!

  • oh shut up you vegan fart smelling idiot the prius was going to slow for there to be a slipstream

  • yo idiot i think the guy was jokeing

  • you idiot he wasn't.

  • The Toyota Prius really isn't all it's cracked up to be. Like JC outlines before this shootout, he goes through the process of making the batteries for the Prius which is shown as hideously un-environmentally friendly.

  • In some cases it may be true, but most of the time it is HOW you drive your vehicle that makes most of the difference.

I think some people think that just because they drive a hybrid, it makes them green, even when they drive like crap.

  • I love it that this has outraged so many people who have had to see their beloved Prius beaten by a gas guzzler in a fuel economy test. Get over it!

The truth is, if the Prius was being driven at normal speeds around town then yes it would be more economical. We all know that. But the point of the test was to show that if you drive any car at full pelt it won't be economical at all.

How do you reckon the BMW would have done if it was being driven at its limit? 4 or 5 mpg perhaps?

  • Do you guys have beards?

  • I have a beard.

  • Ridiculous, the prius gets it's electrical energy from breaking and slow speeds. You did a non-stop course at high speed without one full break.

Toyota called, they said you're fags.

  • If you are stuck in traffic and hardly moving with the engine running I still cannot see how much better the Prius can be.

Other tests have been done (see video: Are hybrids really more fuel efficient? / Timesonline) with similar results.

  • The prius does not 'get' electrical energy from "slow speeds," it 'uses' electrical energy at slow speeds. Secondly, they aren't trying to claim that the bmw is more fuel efficient than the prius on average. All they are trying to say is that if you have a lead foot in no matter what car you drive (prius or hummer)you will be significantly reducing fuel economy. On the flipside, if you drive more conservatively in whatever car you drive, you will ultimately get better mpgs.

  • thanks buddy, these guys from Top gear sucks :)

  • I get about 55 mpg from my Diesel Focus on work and urban journies - traffic is not always the same so promting a car as env. friendly only if...also sucks
