  • this can apply to all things

  • I learned to shred in level one and two

  • Zen master of the bass guitar/music...

  • Love this guy...he knows wat he's talking about.

  • Unoncious Knowing. Why do I feel like they spelled it that way on purpose?

  • This dude is deep!

  • damn he should writte a bible

  • Enlightened...

  • this is the most zen thing i've ever heard coming from a musician O.o

  • Robert Fripp said something similar in his Guitar Craft seminar.

  • Preach!

  • Anthony Wellington: My new 2nd favorite bass player.

  • respect man

  • It makes me smile just to see his eyes when he's talking about music. You can see in his eyes the passion he has for music!

  • AHHH I CANT DO HOMEWORK WITH ALL THIS WISDOM DISTRACTING ME

  • No walls? Then how does the roof stay up? *trollface*

  • I used to be in the 4th state... but then i took an arrow to the knee.

  • I learnt about this man's existence today and I'm quite happy I did so.

  • it seems two people are unable to comprehend the demographics of this simplistic lesson.

  • One thing to add: the great Charlie Parker apparently said something along the same lines. (I paraphrase) "Learn everything you need to know about music and your instrument so you can go on stage, forget it all, and just play".

  • Very, very clear and well-said tutorial. I especially like the connection made between the two "unconscious" levels and the "blissful state", which is the ultimate reason we play music (or sports, or sing, or paint, and so on). It helps a lot to remember that unconscious levels are available to all of us; all it takes, as Anthony says, is to not be afraid (and I'll add, the willingness to do the work).

  • Never heard anybody sum up music so well in my life! that was great

  • I really need to learn more English. If someone know how to get this with Spanish subtitles you will help me greatly.

  • love the dreamy transitions. Imagined like some hectic delay on his voice in those bits

  • Not only is he a great bass player, he's also a philosopher

  • what a soul!. love him!

  • Real inspiring

  • Sooooooo true, I truly hope to get soon to step 4.... considering that I just step into phase 2 the road seems to be long.

  • you have to learn to play and then forget how to play.

  • 2:35 spelling error ;)

  • Hmm Sensei.

  • 2:53 they spelt uncontious wrong (i probly did too)

  • great master, thanks sensei wellington

  • It all boils down to gaining the experience. And you grow faster if what you do is what you like doing. There are people who love listening to music and often mistake themselves deciding they want to play music, when in truth, they just want to mimic and plagiarize musicians to feel content with becoming famous or gain fans - an egoistic approach to music. Then there are the talented ones and the ones who love playing music because of the music itself. And surely they will reach the 4th level...

  • that was fucking jeenyus!

  • deep as hell!

  • I think I'm in the second stage but I've been playing for 4 years. I better get my study/practice on move up to that 3rd level. Can't even think about the 4th level yet.

  • this is advice for "life" not only for musicians...Only people who live such a life can be good at what they do ...

  • beautiful

  • wow ... why am i crying?

  • really quite a brilliant little talk. He sbeing totally sincere and genuinely trying to help us all elevate our playing. A class guy and i sdalute him for sharing his teaching and wisdom...he well could be a bass buddha

  • Improvisational Zen, I like it. I feel I've been there before, but not on a super skilled level. Where you don't think, but it just happens, and it's all right and fits so well. You can almost listen and think, "Huh, I never would have thought of that... but I just played it." Improvisation is fascinating, I wish I was better at it.

  • @SpaceRitual I agree. It makes you realize that you are capable, but you don't really know it or you aren't entirely sure of yourself yet.

Its funny... I feel like I'm in the 2nd stage, still learning new styles, stuck very well into the 3rd stage where I know what I'm playing and how to execute right and improv here and there, and yet at times I'm breaking into the 4th stage where it all falls right into place at exactly the right times and I'm completely zoned out.

    I love being a musician.

  • If there are no walls... then what the heck do I keep running into?

  • @bigtoine45 the only "walls" that exist are the ones that you allow to hinder you. Anything that pops up and takes your mind off your goal or discourages you from it remains there and solidifies into a "wall" until you choose to finally ignore it. Take it from a guy who knows how it feels. When a wall does appear, you just need to keep the mentality that you have the power to walk through it. Its not superhuman, its all will. And everyone has that power.

  • @airwaverider214 im going through this 2nd level in some things and the 3rd level in others and what you said helped me when feeling down about music. So thankyou for sharing it. I can always give good advice to others but never to myself so it helps when someone whos been through similar stuff shares their experiences. Thanks

  • uouuuu!!!!

    couldn't be truler words...

  • Idk, I quite enjoy being conscious not knowing. I like learning bass

  • this is easily one of the greatest things i've ever heard, it really does apply to so much more than just music even karate which i started a couple of years ago.

Just when i was about to totally give up on slapping techniques, now i want to learn how to do it even more :p

  • Benjamin Bloom

  • Hmm...sounds curiously like the "Form of the Good" from Plato's Republic. I'm just sayin".

  • A great lesson and not a single note played. His closing comment made me break out in a big smile.

  • after this video im just unconscious

  • I am at stage 3 and still always aspiring to get beyond my own limits I know my scales and modes forms and styles but everytime I hear something amazing such as what Victor and Antony possess then it makes me want to learn more, the beauty of this statement is that while it may not be blissful to be in the second or third stage the journey it self is more than reason to push on :) to all musicians of all levels keep doing what you do and enjoying it :) peace

  • i'm in the second stage and understand I've got to get to the fourth stage

  • i like this version more than the donald rumsfeld version.

  • Wow... That's just amazing! Anthony is such a amazing musician and makes me feel that I myself can become a really good musician. Thanks for making my day Anthony! :D

  • I take it he was backup for Morpheus.

  • This video has depressed me by showing me that I'm only at the second stage, but I now feel determined to reach the fourth, whether it takes me 2 years or 20.

  • Yeah! Charlie Parker said this in his own way. "Learn the changes, then forget them!"

    excellent.

  • I've heard there's a 5th state called "Chuck Norris"

  • @milou80 ROTFL!!!!!!!!

  • Holy Moly.... :)

  • im at Concious Not Knowing :/

  • Absolutely true, but I'd extend that to be the same in every field: language, science etc. because everything operates on the same absolute and basic principles. Even when learning how to drive and taking the driving licence it's the same, or for professionals in construction, sports, any kind of art, cooking, painting etc. :) As for me, I personally love understanding how things work and the 'systems' behind if you will. God bless you, Anthony-san (And Victor-san) for sharing. sugoi desu yo!

  • besides the music, think of the four levels of awareness to your life. very great advice, im a guitar player and i'm stuck in the second awareness and have been for sometime, and hes right its not blissful not at all. very talented man and very smart.

  • I LOVE THIS!! WOW!! Ant and Vic are soo cool!!

  • There you did it, you made me smile.

  • Musician all my life, best advice I heard yet.

  • I completely agree with this! I'm past grade 8 on drums and whenever i jam, i never ever think about what i'm playing, i just feel it and do it.

However, i've been playing bass for about 4months now and i'm in a concious not-knowing state really, i'll just have to keep practicing/playing!

  • awesome speech!!!

  • lol @ 2:30. anbody else see that?

  • A good brother!!, well said!!

  • @BOTTOM432 I agree very well said!
