I guess I'll have to come back east if I wanna see SD 40's cuz over here on the west coast, all you see are dash 9's and SD 70's and 80's. It's rather boring... :/
@IIIJFRIII Gota say i highly doubt it. Bigboy' were an awsome engine but theres over 22'000 horsepower on that coal drag just to keep it moving at a steady 30 mph or thereabouts. The 2 SD80 MACS behind the front pair of helpers are also probably putting down well over 200 thousand pounds of tractive effort on the rail between them!!
@formidable38 We will have to wait until im a billion air one day (hopefully) ! Then I will restore all the remaining BigBoys to working order and make new recocords with them, inluding the worlds longesy trains with atleast 5 BigBoys working on one load lol. Its a epic dream lets pray it happens.
@IIIJFRIII I agree, that would really be something!! The BB's were a sight to behold for sure! Those along with the Norfolk & Western Y6B's, another huge American behemoth all of its own. Happy days!
Get that! They put seats on the lineside so people can watch the trains in comfort. This would NOT happen in the UK, 'cos railfans are seen as stupid in the UK.
@307OLDS Can you guys stop doing this on Rich's video? There are lots of railfans who watch this that probably would appreciate the comments being related to the excellent video and not to sexually explicit insults meant for personal messages
The light gray hoppers you see are not called hoppers they are gons. They do not dump coal out of a chute on the bottom, they tip the whole car over to empty it.
Conrail rebuilt some of the SD40's they acquired from the KCS. Right now NS is taking ex-Conrail SD50's and rebuilding them into SD40E's. They are essentially SD40-2's in an SD50 car body. They have better tractive effort than the current SD40-2's.
Well this vid is just great all around. Not only is it put together well, but it features 4 of my favorite helpers all on one train. My all-time favorite 3347 in the leading position, the "SCREAMER" 3427, my favorite black helper, as well as the then-blue 3338 and the always cool blue-boxed 3373. I have but one word to describe this video...FAVORITED!!

the previous comments look like some sort of fight going on. i'd delete them.... they distract from the beauty of the rails....

i just noticed a lot of different hopper cars on this train from the old Conrail Beth Gons to the NS Top Gons, and regular NS Hoppers.

Carney's Crossing is a great place to spot. You can hear a monster like this one rumbling up the line for several minutes before the gates go down.
