  • rumors say that Tarantino has seen the very uncut version in his ranch ?! (torture, cleavage, all the censored stuff ?!) we need this too :( . does the warner dvd has some uncut ?!

  • Good news! You can also get it through Amazon or Turner Classic Movies. I've waited along time for this one. Now they need to release another Rod Taylor classic "Darker than Amber."

  • this has been released as part of the Warner Archive - go to the Warner Brothers website and they'll sell you a copy, gladly. It's a record on demand service. You can't watch the DVDs on your computer, just a dvd player, but it is available for purchase

  • The upcoming Warner DVD is the censored version that has been shown on TCM. The uncut version with gore and Mimieux cleavage hasn't been seen since 1968 prints.

  • @GordonMorrice Correction: German TV has shown the uncut (or at least a less censored) version in recent years.

  • The widescreen version is being shown on TCM as of Jan 2011, so the DVD shouldn't be far away.

What a great movie. I hate this sort of thing usually, but Dark of the Sun blew me away. Probably not a date flick though.

  • This movie was shown once in a theatre in Salisbury, Rhodesia back in 1977. It played as'The Mercenaries'. I had entered the theatre after the movie started, and when It was over, and the house lights came on, I saw what I guessed to be every hired soldier that I knew in the audience. We got a big laugh out of that.

  • I was wondering if anyone had picked up on the two DotS homages in Inglourious Basterds. Were there more than 2?

  • DOTS is my all-time favorite action movie. The camaraderie between Rod Taylor and Jim Brown is truly unique, and the action jangles your nerves. And they blow things up DAMN GOOD!

  • one hundred millllllionnn dolllllarrrssssss.

  • yup same here actually i found out about this movie because of the catchy theme they played in ingloryousbasterds i dint know they made badass movies like this back then now i have to see it.

  • 10 years older but much better than "The wld geese". best mercenary movie ever till today.

  • excellent trailer!!!

  • I'm afraid not to be a Jimmy Brown fan...He'll beat me up!

  • I love rod taylor Too..In chuka and time machine also..Plus have the beautiful Iyvette Mimeaux..she did time macine with him too..great stuff thks for posting..I bought hte VHS on ebay along with another movie you never see-Gargoyles with cornel wild the naked pray and great sebastian fella

  • Watched i yesterday. Amazing film! It a shame it hasent been realesed on DVD.

  • I thank Quentin and co... I saw a fantastic! festival movie fahfah and the u.s. were def the bad guys amongst other craphand players, kinda sad etc, hopefully we can just fantacise and not continue the travisty of disengagement.

  • I've been waiting for years to see this movie get a proper DVD release. It was distributed by MGM back in 1968 but now apparently Warner owns the righst and they are notorious for sitting on their film library and doing nothing. I was hoping Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds would get somebody at Warner to wake up and get Dark Of The Sun out on DVD but apparently not.

  • Turner Entertainment actually owns the rights. On the VHS release, the Turner logo appears before the MGM logo. Rumour has it DOTS will finally be released in 2011.

  • @SupportingActor

I hope you're right. Just like that first poster, I'm dying to have a DVD version of this great movie myself

  • @CesMan83 I have the vhs of "dark of the sun" aka "the mercenaries". I was able to transfer the contents of the vhs to dvd.

  • @1946Oliver

That's cool. But I'd rather have an official DVD, complete with a trailer, commentary, scene selections, etc...rumor has it the official DVD's coming out next year

  • @SupportingActor Aaaannd, one year later, it has!

  • @joesten63 - I was able to transfer this movie from vhs to dvd.

  • Great movie, have it on vhs but i will record it on 2 a dvd !

  • I have this movie on DVD in widescreen. I recorded it off a cable TV channel with a DVD recorder.

  • you can get this at Zero day dvd (zzd).com

  • It hasn't been officially released yet. However, there have been copies produced from VHS or 16 mm film being sold at various sites for a few years. Sometimes those copies are OK, most of the time the quality is horrible.

  • @SupportingActor I've found good quality downloads of it. When I 1st started looking for it about 2 years ago, it was really hard to find. Than all of the sudden it started popping up all over. Stagevu has a free, good quality download, for anybody interested.

  • I have uploaded the soundtrack to this film for anyone interested, including two of the songs from IB that aren't on the official IB soundtrack

  • This movie is a success because of its style and finess. I thought the plot petered out by the end of it though.

  • If anyone knows where I can get this movie tell me. I cant find it anywhere

  • So far it hasn't been officially released on DVD yet. It was released on VHS about 5 years ago, but is now out of print. You can find VHS copies for sale on EBAY on a regular basis.

  • I seriously CANNOT believe this movie is not on DVD! It's ridiculous...I'm hoping the fact that Tarantino referenced this movie in "Inglorious Basterds" would be enough to help create a special edition DVD for "Dark of the Sun"!

  • @SupportingActor I have the vhs of this movie and was able to transfer it to dvd.

  • one of my favourite movies,QT used the music in this in IB,and used this as some inspiration behind it.

  • A classic film, and one that is some what forgotten today.

I also think it was the first, and probably the only, major Hollywood film that dealt with the Congo uprising.

The book was called "Last Train to Katanga."

  • Really cool-looking movie...I can't help but think if Sylvester Stallone was inspired by this film for his newest upcoming flick, "The Expendables"

  • This is a great film , one of my favourites. This film was called "Simba" as well as "Dark Of The Sun",but I am not sure why it was known by two titles.Does anybody know why?

  • It was also released under the title "The Mercenaries." Sometimes the names of films are changed for releases in different countries, or when they are syndicated and shown on TV. Another one of Rod Taylor's movies was released as both "The High Commissioner" and "Nobody Runs Forever."

  • Ver ah zee diamonds. Ver ah zee diamonds!!!!

  • Excellent flick!!

  • Dark of the Sun was probably the most violent movie of the 1960's!

It was ahead of it's time for sheer brutality and blood and gore!

Both Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorcese rate it as one of their "Guilty Pleasures" in movie watching!

It's too bad Rod Taylor didn't get more roles like this.He was always under-utilized as an actor in Hollywood.

He would have made a great James Bond, and should have been in Dr Zhivago and Planet of the Apes! His career slowed a lot by the mid 1970's!

  • Right you are. Taylor has been quoted more than once that he was approached about playing James Bond before Sean Connery, but turned down the role. Then after Connery quit, Taylor changed his mind and became interested in the 007 series, but was told he had become too "Americanized," and people wouldn't buy him playing a British agent.

  • I can understand why the producers of the Bond movies didn't want Rod by the early 1970's.Yes he was too Americanized, but also he had aged quite a fair bit by then too!

He was a heavy drinker and smoker and they take their toll on ones physical appearance quite early!(Look at Mel Gibson!)

Rod was asked to screen test for Bond in 1961, but he felt it was below him and never thought the Bond movies would be successful!

Bad move! How things could have been so different for him!!

  • Outstanding MUSIC THEME with the Railway engine

in the background. Absolutely top of the line,

    but unknown to today's public.

  • Rod Taylor was FABULOUS in this role. Other than his work in YOUNG CASSIDY, this is probably his best performance.

  • Glad to hear you like Rod Taylor!

I agree with you, Young Cassidy and Dark of the Sun were two of his best, along with The Time Machine.

It's too bad his career took a nose dive in the early 1970's! Nobody wanted masculine heroes anymore, only soft powder-puff efeminate men who were concerned with how they looked!

And look where that has taken us!!
