I agree... but someone said that Kansas are better than Genesis because they never wrote stuff like Invisible touch... Well I have to disagree with that, they were blown away by the 80s like most seventies bands... But songs like "Bells" is the proof that they could still write epic stuff!
One of my favorite Kansas albums too, although if they had left Once in a lifetime and maybe One man one heart out this work would have sounded a little bit less commercial. As for Genesis... Kansas learnt a lot from them, people need to acknowledge that...
I think it's safe to say that any band has many influences and it's really not necessary to point that out. There's nothing wrong with doing so but demanding it is really not necessary.
In the Spirit of Things really is a great album; it's an album not a collection of songs. The production and songwriting are excellent. However, I don't view it as a true Kansas album because it wasn't scripted by Livgren or Walsh, for the most part. Walsh contibuted, as did Morse, but 50% is by outside writers.
I've been a Kansas fan for about thirty years. I love most of their early stuff but "In the Spirit of Things" has been my favorite album since it came out in 1988.
I will be getting a 3 song video soon with Steve Morse as part of the band and another friend has a video with Morse and Van Romaine on drums which he will be posting in the near future!
@dchris24 I agree with you! Steve's vocals in the Power album are unbelievable!!! I really loved both of these albums! What a talent! Thanks for posting this!
I always feel that Kansas should have been as huge as Genesis but I guess their music was just not as commercial. No "In Too Deep", "That's All", "Invisible Touch" etc. - not that I'm knocking those songs. I just prefer "House On Fire" or "Bells of St. James" to any of the Genesis songs I mentioned.
One of the most underrated, yet amazing and powerful recordings Kansas ever made. Definitely not in the traditional vein of the "classic Kansas sound", but it was still the band at its peak.
Steve Walsh's soulful and passionate singing combined with Steve Morse's guitar wizardry really resulted in music for the ages.
This song is so deep and heavy lyricly with tons of emotion. God, I love this album. If there had only been a chance, back when it was released. One thing I don't understand ws why this was the last song on the album. Should have been placed 2 or 3 to carry the rest of the albums emotion and spirit. I guess thats where the record company really f'ed things up for this album. Still one of the best albums of the late 80's
Kansas got screwed pretty much the whole time after they reformed '86. Lots of gems like this one that got lost in the sauce because of idiots at the record companies!
yes i have the LP ( all Kansas records )and this is one of my favorite kansas songs....but the solo must be by Steve Morse....Rich Williams is in history of Kansas and progressive rock in the world but Bells of s.james soloSteve Morse can play only!!!
Steve Morse is an incredible guitarist but he isn't with Kansas anymore and wasn't when this was recorded. Does that mean they can't play the song anymore? It sounds fantastic to me here !
Hey Don't misunderstand me,i mean that in studio record"In the spirit of things"the amazing guitar solos are steve morse's guitar as "Power"record, two amazing studio records,if steve morse would stay with Kansas was better then his useless playing with deep purple, what i mean...Steve Morse is a great versatile musician and with Kansas did great stuff with old Rich Williams(max respect for him)as i told yesterday!I agree it sounds fantastic the song here!
As I indicated this is rare as are any recordings of the band in the 1990-1994 time period. But shows keep popping up all the time. The more the better as this band more than any other deserves to be spread to the masses and be known for more than just "Carry On" and "Dust"! This song is a perfect example of a huge amount of Kansas material that should be heard!
You, my friend are one lucky person! I hope you picked up a memento or two to show to the grandkids who will probably know "Dust In The Wind" and "Carry On Wayward Son" when you are old and feeble and I am turning into Dust! What did you think of Native Window?....Rick
I actually wasn't at any show that Native Window opened for, but the music I've heard from their myspace is very cool. I indeed have several mementos, including a picture with Steve. They are nights I will absolutely never forget.
I read somewhere, probably in the "Closet Chronicle" that they did this for the first time live in 1994. It's great to find what I read about, and it's great to hear rare 1994 material. Thanks!
What? You don't believe the photos? You think they were doctored? Alright I confess! I made the whole thing up! I bow to your superior investigative powers. I wont try to pull one over on you again! Yeah that's the ticket!
no no no! sometimes the things I say get taken the wrong way...you know....like the "I do" I said to my first wife...hehehe..I must confess I wasn't even lookin at the pics when I first heard this post. I was reading your info about it and replied a bit too quick...oops. never again...now I feel like a dufus...and learned a Kansas fact I never knew! you da man!
That's o.k. because I only found out about the Phil-less Kansas about 6 months ago (maybe a year) when some guy said that it wasn't Phil in a 1982 video when it was. I replied that Phil is the only drummer that ever played for Kansas and was directed to an article in their short lived fan magazine "The Closet Chronicles". Sure enough there was an article about Phil taking a sabbatical and another guy played with Kansas besides the guy in this video.I learn new stuff about them all the time.
Thanks for having my back! There was another drummer and maybe even a guitar player during that little stretch that Phil took off. I'd like to get a recording with these other people but that may be asking too much!
In 1994 Phil Ehart took some time off from touring with Kansas because he had jost got married and was working on the first Kansas Boxed Set that came out around that time. Phil has been Kansas's manager since around 1989 and he wanted to stick around the house for a while. Both Van Romaine and Bryan Holmes played drums for Kansas around this time. I heard Kansas perform this song live in Oklahoma City at Frontier City Amusement park in 1994.
Hey that's really great Andrew. Please tell me all about it! If you can remember the set list and buy a program if they have one. You won't regret it. I've got lot's more cool and rare stuff to post in the future so don't touch that dial!....Rick
And again an awesome video with a great Kansas performance and lots of fantastic photos in it. I actually don't like "In The Spirit Of Things" so much but this song is amazing :-).
Man....for all the subpar vocal performances Walsh had in the 90's, you've posted some stuff lately where he's really shined. This is one of them. They could totally pull this off still.
Cool! Thanks Rick! I think a lot of of the songs from the Power and In The Spirit Of Things era are intense, and this is a good one!
One thing I like about Kansas is that you can really interpret a meaning from their songs; I always interpret this as being about a guy going crazy after his wife left him while he was fighting in Korea!
Thanks Javier. You know the saying "If I tell you I have to kill you"! well it's like that but more like If I tell you I have to kill myself because then the source wont give me anymore.
You don't know how right you are!( nah,you probably do!) MCA dropped a bunch of older acts and Kansas got caught in the process. This album got very little push from the suits and therefore suffered at the cash register and on the charts. They went on their own after this!
I agree... but someone said that Kansas are better than Genesis because they never wrote stuff like Invisible touch... Well I have to disagree with that, they were blown away by the 80s like most seventies bands... But songs like "Bells" is the proof that they could still write epic stuff!

And Genesis learned a lot from Kansas too. Steve Hackett once said that Steve Walsh was the best lead singer in the world!
