  • Has anybody else noticed that almost every time they do a close up on sting his mic is positioned differently

  • @xxPunchDownxx

    HAHAHAH, great sense!

At least it's the same SM58 each time.

    funny :))

  • Yes, I think 5/8, but anywere GREAT.

Vinnie Collaiuta on drumms? He is unbelivable.

Je to celý super - díky!!!!

  • It's 5/4

  • 5/8

  • this is an amazing song...genius compared to today's crap...oh where's the world heading to??

  • I know, all of the greatest musician's are getting old, what legends do we have? This generation needs to get up and make something of themselves

  • Genial! :) Zseniális!!

  • It's great!

  • Funny, how natural a 5/4 can sound. Brilliant.

  • You're exactly right. What a jam.

  • 5/4

  • yo, it ain't 3/4, it's 5/8..

  • He's way up there, among the best!

  • SATUUUUUH DEEEEEEEHHH!!!!

  • "Doesn't bother me at all

    My rival is neanderthal

    He makes me think

    Perhaps I need a drink

    IQ is no problem here

We won't be playing Scrabble for her hand I fear

    I need that beer"

    2:02 - 2:26

Pure genius! Who the fuck incorporates Scrabble so brilliantly into their lyrics? I love Sting and this song! I love the entire album Ten Summoner's Tales

  • it's 5/8.. you can just count to five.. so the snare is on four..

  • Mammmma mia Vinnie mi fà sbrodolare sul finale :)

  • 5/4

  • how did you count it? lol, im still new at this thing.

  • I play drums so a very basic groove would be bass drum on 1 and 2+ ,cymbal/hi hat on 12345 snare on 4

  • is the time signature 4/4? im guessing its 4/4 with the semi-whole notes.

  • i love this song i grow up hearing this song and the car with my auntie i love you sting!!!!!!!!

  • I love you Sting!

  • What I love about this is the odd meter is almost hidden with great song construction. Vinnie playes it just right but the glory still needs to go to the composer. It is no accident that the off time signature is masked by the overall song, that is one thing Sting does very well.

  • far too low volume to enjoy this superb music properly.....

  • Vinnie's awesome! My kind of drummer.

  • 5/8 is a definite yes!!! 5/4 is a definite no!

  • yeah.. it's 5/8. you can hear the drum groove start over after 5/8 and not 5/4

  • i like the guy with the cookie monster voice near the end...

  • this boy have gremmy when play this song

  • i dont know english! it so good. i listen the melody, its perfect. so good so inspirated. daniel de cordoba arg

  • hey guys!!!Sting is a great singer and i love all the songs!!!Sting's band make something amazing which can make me happy!!

  • A MASTERPIECE!!!!!

  • incredible progression through the song and a really inspiring Chorus! Loved this song the instant I heard it! :)

  • I had this cd, and played the shit out of it. A lot of great songs on it. But this song, there's something special about this song. The musicianship is mind boggling.

  • i had his tune on a album but i gave all my music to my son , i kind of regret that

  • really a masterpiece , very difficult to maintain the rhytm, but Sting managed unbelievably well :-)

  • yeah 5/8.. so groovy..

  • actually the time signature is in 5/4, drum teacher was talking about this song, and he said that was the time sig. so ima take his word on it.

  • Yes, it's in 5/4. What made this song great is the way Vinnie Colaiuta plays over the bar line to give it a more even feel, as well as how Sting plays with the rhythm of the melody so it doesn't end up feeling as much like an odd-meter song.

  • true, it defiantly doesnt sound like an odd meter song. The feeling is so smooth and Vinnie is absolutely amazing in this song

  • It's a good point but what makes it feel like common time is then VC is rimshotting on the 4 so it feels like it's 4/4.

But....what's the time signature on the break??

  • The accents on the hihat and ride also make it sound even. The entire song is in 5/4 time.

  • Really? Do you think? How did you count 5 across the break??

  • It's 5/8 mate

  • It's 5/8. Wonderful piece of music.

  • it's my song

  • Still astonished earing this piece. He masters melody, harmony, and rhythm (is it 5/8 or 3+2/4?) and all this seems easy.

And he's got the fucking sexiest voice I've heard since 20 years.

What else? Not brown haired George but blond Andy!

  • Hmm..I'd probably say 5/4. I agree with you though that it's a wonderfull piece that combines pretty much everything, melody, rhythm, chords and harmony. Perfect for practicing without getting bored!

  • I'm playing this song in drumming lessons and it's noted in 5/4 throughout the song, with the accents shifted a little every few beats.

  • A masterpiece...brings back some memories...

what is the name of that guitarist?

  • Dominic Miller

  • vinnie amazing really amazing!!!

  • this song is probably the best structured sting song that i have herd, i absoloutly love it ! SO FUCKING MUCH! :D

  • a Masterpiece by Sting and Vinnie.

  • thousand years is the best song sung by sting

    !!

  • wow masterpice

  • I have to agree with MsDarkMatter. Just brilliant!!! Im a young dude but there is nothing like this rite now.

  • I grew up on this song, and when I hear it, it was like a breath of fresh air!

  • My music ......

  • Everything Sting plays and sings is absolutely brilliant. I love it !

  • Non gli ho mai perdonato lo scioglimento dei Police, ma davanti a 'sto capolavoro... E il Vinnie ? Ne vogliamo parlare ? Porca mignotta !

  • canzone pop rock in 5/4. Dal genio di un uomo spesso castrato dalla sua casa discografica...

  • Grande Vinnie colaiuta!!!!

  • mitico!

  • This is the perfect song to play in your car when you're on the highway (or in a town) at night while it's raining.

    It's good! I like the 5/4 beat.

  • what is the name of guy playing on the guitar ?

  • Dominic Miller

  • thanks

  • vinnie is mesmerising....

  • yesss very good

  • Can't stop listening to this song . . . over and over . . . Vinnie is just amazing. One of the most tasteful drum tracks I've ever heard. A perfect example of using incredible skill in a musical context.

  • yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....the groove of vinieee is terrificant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • VINCENZO Colaiuta.....italian

  • uh? he's not italian. His name is Vincent and he was born in Pennsylvania

  • Comment removed

  • boh...

  • Vinnie Collatuia on drums, no doubt.

  • 1993 all I listened 2 was this album & 2pac the good dayz

  • Vinnie Colaiuta really made this song sound so good. He's my 2nd best drummer of all time being Jeff Porcaro as my no. 1. Nevertheless, Sting is also one of the great musicians of our time. Their Police reunion was awesome to the max.

  • I totally agree re: Vinnie, AMAZING drummer. Plays with more finesse than 99.9% of other really good drummers out there. His work on TST makes it my favorite Sting recording.

  • I also really enjoyed the Police Reunion tour. The guys are now off the charts better musicians than back in the day! I really liked the degree of improv that characterized the Atlanta concert. Stewart Copeland was a total monster.

  • Jeff was a groove master!! No solos just groove..

  • Vinnie is a gentile fireworks display.

  • Sting is the man...Vinnie is sick man!!!

  • Vinnie on Masking 5-count: It wasn't so much to disguise it for the sake of disguising it. I phrased it by playing over the bar line, so the hi-hat pattern resolves every two bars. That smoothes it out and gives it a regularity that 4/4 has. There's a brush overdub in the middle of one of the verses of the song, too. I overdubbed it to make it chug a little more and differently.

  • Drummer DOES look like Max. Verses are 5/4. Interesting...esp with the syncopation element.

  • Vinnie totally makes this song.

  • oK sTING, BUT .... THIS SOUND

  • Vinnie you are great amigo!..

  • Btw, did anyone notice that he uses the same 6' 10" guy reference in here and in The Police song "I Can't Stand Losing You" lol I wonder if he actually knew a person like that haha

  • this has one of the best choruses in the world.

  • great song strong composition!.......1 upon a time some were.......need more of....those......vinnie great ......drums ...colours...wo wo!!!!!

  • Vinnie Colaiuta superb ! Awsome song

  • Un grand crue!.... superb!

  • The great Vinnie Colaiuta on drums.

  • oh yes a genius

    in every kind of music

  • Is that Max Wienburg on drums?

  • No is not Weinberg on drums but Colaiuta!

  • Vinnie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The drummer is something fantastic, and Im a bassist. He play smothly is a rare things to see and he have a good dinamic of sound

  • You don't come across those very often. Check out a tune called 'The Trees' by Rush. Gifted musicians, they are.

I think it goes without saying that I have an immense amount of respect for Sting.

  • I adore this song.

  • HA!!! I've watched this video a dozen times and I never noticed how many times his mic changes positions. Good catch!

  • the drummer here is the Beethoven of drumming. Collauita: the best drummer in the world I think. such class and style

  • Our favourite Sting album, Ten Summoners Tales. But when there's a video, please just show me Vinnie! Amazing hands. Saw him live with Chick Corea's 5 piece band in The Hague last year.

  • I like how his microphone changes position like every clip :o

  • Don't know much about the technical side of music but I know a beautiful song when I hear one....THIS IS BEAUTIFUL.

  • This song's got a real "sting" in the tail. he he

  • The audio doesnt sync with the video. It looks like the audio version was dubbed unto some raw video format without sound. Kinda breaks the perfection ...

  • What are you talking about??!!

I don't see what you THINK you're seeing!

  • Im talking about the drummer doing fills and bits in the video that doesnt show up in the audio, e.g. fill @ 1:03.

  • AWESOME SONG!... whos the drummer? :P

  • Vinnie Colaiuta...

The best of the best, and a lot of people share my statement..

  • the time is in 5/8, and it's absolutely crazy how smoothly the whole band grooves this song in that certain time signature.

  • Loove this song !!! =)

  • What knocks me out is how he can sing , scat, and play in that time signature! 5/4 time? Great song.

  • yes, 5/4 he's class

  • damn. i though there was a string section. damn thats a great synth!!!lol. great song!!

  • Que música linda!

  • Muchas gracias 2006hankscorpio, y tienes idea de donde lo puedo bajar?

  • Emule o Lphant

  • Gracias again, que es Lphant, lo mismo que emule??

  • Someone could tell me who is the drummer in this video? Vinnie Colaiuta, is not?

  • positive!

  • Muchas gracias!

  • yes:

    Vinnie Colaiuta

    David Sancius at keyboards

    Dominique Miller at guitar

  • Sabe alguien como se llama la colección entera a la que pertenece este video, y donde se puede conseguir.

  • "Ten Summoner's Tales" Existe un video de 2hrs de todo el album.

  • Donde lo consigo?

  • wont be aced on this one it's 5/4 . final verdict

  • Absolutely, it's a fast 5/4

  • is vinnie the drummer on fields of gold?

  • hi josh, thank god somebody knows 5/4 dont think vinnie was thinkin that much more like whakin them drums - what he's good at

  • Amazing song by an even more amazing artist and I hope he writes more songs like this one and others off of the album.

  • C'est magnifique!

  • sei impeccabile .sei tutti noi .... ti adoriamo..... sei mitico e insostituibile.....continua con le tue canzoni a farci sognare t.v.b.

  • Vinnie is amazing! St Augustine in Hell is amazing, with the ride cymbal on the downbeat one measure, then on the upbeat the next, but all ride cymbal hits evenly spaced! Wow!

  • what kind of guitar does the guy play? i think its pretty cool

    excellent song by the way

  • It's a guild peregrine

  • 4:00

What the hell? I first heard that on the CD, and whenever the song was on, I'd crank up the volume really loud just to hear that.

    But seriously, what the fuck?

  • Maybe it's just one of those little things that artists sometimes chuck into a song as a little nuance for repeat listeners. Maybe they just did it as a joke? There's that song off 'Dream of the Blue Turtles' where at the start, one of the musicians is saying 'Wait! What key is this in?!' Maybe the 4:00 thing in this song is some popular music reference that neither you or I get? Who knows.

  • It was probably just him messing around during rehearsal one time and he decided to throw it into the actual track.

  • no!

  • Why not?

  • its 5/4... the snare is on beat 4...

  • sorry....you right... 5/8

  • 5/4

  • Sting is brilliant he wrote the most beautiful love songs ever.

  • i think it's 5/8, Sting really enjoys 5-beat rhythm, makes characteristic feeling about the song. "Hung my head" is another 5-beat rhythm song by him.

  • Nope. 'I hung my head' (track 2 of Mercury Falling album) is 9/4. That's another great song by Sting.

Other 'odd' songs by Sting in Ten Summoner's Tales are St. Augustine in Hell and Love is Stronger Than Justice.

  • I think it's a 5/4...note the accents in the innerbeats...almost shure that drums is 5/4...

  • well it's not 7/8 for sure.

This is in 5/8. It's too fast for 5/4 if you count it out, listen to how fast you're counting.

  • No....this piece is in 5/8 time!!!!

  • right most of the song all instruments accenting 1 and & of 2 except vinnie on drums who is playing 1 on bass drum and beat 4 on snare.

    no doubt 5/8.

  • I love this song =]

  • this song always reminds me of school for sum reason

  • lol ur right ahahahah

  • lov it...:)

  • either school or playing Zelda. lol

  • if u like soft and romantic songs come to my playlist of soft songs 0s-90s

  • They are playing in Sting's very own "music room" at his 400+ years old manor house in England. Cool Room. Hundreds of years old!! Great ambience...... yeah?

  • Love the vid. Its cool to see them play their instruments.

  • I love this song! One of the greatest drum tracks of all time!!!

  • agreed

  • Name Barry; whereabouts invisible. Thanks for compliment, though....

  • the drummer is MY boyfriend...

  • jajajajaj he is my uncle

  • duh .. he is my dad.

  • "Wednesday would be just fine". I agree an awesome use of 5/8 time. Wonderful

    song!

  • Such an awesome use of 5/8 time.

  • No kidding, usually in a time of 5 I have to count at some point to get the rhythm down, but this song just flows, and the time feels so natural.

  • You're right. A perfect example to how to flow a 5/4 rythm. Should be Vinnie Collaiuta and Sting to make this so natural.

Listen to "Saint Augustine In Hell" to listen the same phenomenon on a 7/4 rythm...

May this be the reason why "Ten Summoner's Tales" is one of my fav'ever LP, you can listen it hundreds times, it still lovely, it can not bore, never.

    More than Great Musicians.
