Colaiuta como siempre con su genial aporte...cualquiera toca en 5/4, pero él le imprime un sentido emocional a la interpretación, le da la intensidad necesaria a cada segmento del tema....un Tony Williams moderno.
Pure genius! Who the fuck incorporates Scrabble so brilliantly into their lyrics? I love Sting and this song! I love the entire album Ten Summoner's Tales
What I love about this is the odd meter is almost hidden with great song construction. Vinnie playes it just right but the glory still needs to go to the composer. It is no accident that the off time signature is masked by the overall song, that is one thing Sting does very well.
I had this cd, and played the shit out of it. A lot of great songs on it. But this song, there's something special about this song. The musicianship is mind boggling.
Yes, it's in 5/4. What made this song great is the way Vinnie Colaiuta plays over the bar line to give it a more even feel, as well as how Sting plays with the rhythm of the melody so it doesn't end up feeling as much like an odd-meter song.
Hmm..I'd probably say 5/4. I agree with you though that it's a wonderfull piece that combines pretty much everything, melody, rhythm, chords and harmony. Perfect for practicing without getting bored!
Can't stop listening to this song . . . over and over . . . Vinnie is just amazing. One of the most tasteful drum tracks I've ever heard. A perfect example of using incredible skill in a musical context.
The personal name of the only true God. His own self-designation. Jehovah is the Creator and, rightfully, the Sovereign Ruler of the universe. Jehovah is translated from the Hebrew Tetragrammaton, יהוה, which means He Causes to Become. These four Hebrew letters are represented in many languages by the letters JHVH or YHWH. Mark 1: 14 Now after John was put under arrest Jesus went into Gal´i•lee, preaching the good news of God
Vinnie Colaiuta really made this song sound so good. He's my 2nd best drummer of all time being Jeff Porcaro as my no. 1. Nevertheless, Sting is also one of the great musicians of our time. Their Police reunion was awesome to the max.
I totally agree re: Vinnie, AMAZING drummer. Plays with more finesse than 99.9% of other really good drummers out there. His work on TST makes it my favorite Sting recording.
I also really enjoyed the Police Reunion tour. The guys are now off the charts better musicians than back in the day! I really liked the degree of improv that characterized the Atlanta concert. Stewart Copeland was a total monster.
Vinnie on Masking 5-count: It wasn't so much to disguise it for the sake of disguising it. I phrased it by playing over the bar line, so the hi-hat pattern resolves every two bars. That smoothes it out and gives it a regularity that 4/4 has. There's a brush overdub in the middle of one of the verses of the song, too. I overdubbed it to make it chug a little more and differently.
Btw, did anyone notice that he uses the same 6' 10" guy reference in here and in The Police song "I Can't Stand Losing You" lol I wonder if he actually knew a person like that haha
Our favourite Sting album, Ten Summoners Tales. But when there's a video, please just show me Vinnie! Amazing hands. Saw him live with Chick Corea's 5 piece band in The Hague last year.
The audio doesnt sync with the video. It looks like the audio version was dubbed unto some raw video format without sound. Kinda breaks the perfection ...
Vinnie is amazing! St Augustine in Hell is amazing, with the ride cymbal on the downbeat one measure, then on the upbeat the next, but all ride cymbal hits evenly spaced! Wow!
Maybe it's just one of those little things that artists sometimes chuck into a song as a little nuance for repeat listeners. Maybe they just did it as a joke? There's that song off 'Dream of the Blue Turtles' where at the start, one of the musicians is saying 'Wait! What key is this in?!' Maybe the 4:00 thing in this song is some popular music reference that neither you or I get? Who knows.
i think it's 5/8, Sting really enjoys 5-beat rhythm, makes characteristic feeling about the song. "Hung my head" is another 5-beat rhythm song by him.
They are playing in Sting's very own "music room" at his 400+ years old manor house in England. Cool Room. Hundreds of years old!! Great ambience...... yeah?
You're right. A perfect example to how to flow a 5/4 rythm. Should be Vinnie Collaiuta and Sting to make this so natural.
Listen to "Saint Augustine In Hell" to listen the same phenomenon on a 7/4 rythm...
May this be the reason why "Ten Summoner's Tales" is one of my fav'ever LP, you can listen it hundreds times, it still lovely, it can not bore, never.
Has anybody else noticed that almost every time they do a close up on sting his mic is positioned differently
