the quality of this sci fi classic is amazing almost hd,and the sfx for the time is very good,i did cringe at the scene whare the men are watching the film
In Sergeant Imoto's statement to volunteer to go to Mars, he said that Japan chose to fight a terrible war because of Japan's poverty, and Japanese had to use chopsticks and live in rice paper houses. But, as a Japanese citizen, I have to say that this is a culturally biased opinion. In fact, Japanese economy is third largest in the world today, and we are no longer poor people, but we still use chopsticks and live in rice paper houses. But, anyway, I love this scene very much.
Thanks so much for posting. This is a little gem in the fifties sci-fi-genre indeed. The picture quality is actually really stunning, looks like HD. Great work.
Yeah I was 5 years old when this came out, it's one of my earliest movie memories, and I was riveted throughout the movie. The funeral scene in space really affected me.
Simulations of earth are actually pretty good. Think of the ones in Star Trek and look at the ones here. They could use more clouds but have seen some video ISS that look like some of the earth shots. Thanks for the post.
Great movie for 1955. Kubrik stole the space station. At this time absolutely none of the things that relate to later achievements were even being considered. The script writer had a great vision of the future. Sets and acting typical for 1955 B SciFi movie. Thanks!
puts me back in comfort zone, never get tired of this film, I thought life like this would be commonplace in 2000 AD as i grew up ? Ah well here"s to the future
@nthib91 Becasue the original plan was to land on Mars and the Moon trip was just a test flight. They decided to skip the test and execute the original plan
Fine Classic. Better than most the crap on the SyFy channel. You get a pre-2001 vibe from everything. Oh, and I love the Mars Ship...I shouldn't say this, but I think its cooler than Fireball XL-5. The wing area is just about right for the real mars...they really tried to design everything right. Bonestell and Ley are serious analists.
Really enjoyed this movie. It was quite authentic. The characters were well done as they might actually be in such a journey to Mars. I think the Sarge was just really blowing off steam. Afterall his best friend was dead. I didn't think he'd actually go through with the Courts-Martial. And, in reality, it was a fitting tribute to General Maller as it should have been. Afterall, he got them there safely. Thanks for sharing this movie. A tribute to all astronauts.
Even for the times this was an incredibly badly written and poorly acted movie. The color, the sets and the music are fine but the rest of it is terrible.

@MrEjidorie Remember when this was made. Japan at the time was both resource poor, and really bad at cooperating with other countries.
