I remember (grabs slippers and pipe) staying up late as a fourteen year-old to watch the word, a late night show that used to air on channel 4 in the UK.
FNM were playing at the end.
They started out by playing 'Easy' only to suddenly stop during the opening bars and broke out into this song. And he nailed the chorus live. None of yer modifying the vocal to suit a performance a la Beyonce or the other vocal gymnasts who never hit the top end at live shows.
While the Beegee's may be more technically correct, Mike Patton's singing I feel matches the tone of the song better. It should be a kind of bittersweet and ironic song, where the Beegees just don't lend themselves to that very well. Bowie could probably pull it off very well. As for Patton as a singer, while he's not the best at any one style he makes up for it in versatility. I haven't found a genre he can't hold his own within.
@imunchbutts Im aware that its a cover lol. What i said is this version is far better. Mike Patton is one of the greatest vocalists ever and he lives up to that here. The vocals on the Bee Gees version pale in comparison.
@Qazwsxe789 Hahaha are you joking? Patton is not eve close to the greatest vocalist ever. HAHAHAHAHAHA! He's not even in the top 200. The Bee Gees vocals are some of the best ever. You are just too naive to understand that.
Explain why this cover is better to me and I might believe you.
@imunchbutts "Patton could very well be one of the most versatile and talented singers in rock music."
"A complete and utter musical visionary and a mind-blowing and standard-warping genius." Those are just a couple of critical opinions of Patton for your enjoyment. The reason I think the cover is better than original... listen to Mike's voice. It's so powerful and carries so much emotion. The guy from the Bee Gees has a rather weak sounding voice.
Mike Patton doesn't have 3 people singing with him, so go figure. And Mike Patton is varied, and experienced, while the Bee Gee's, I love them remember this, can only do one thing.
@imunchbutts Patton is one of the most skilled voices when it comes to technical skill. Also, he is a very influental singer, easily belonging in the umbrella of greatest vocalists of all time.
The Bee Gees were also great singers, especially Barry.
@panam77 Where do you get cursing instead of hurting? Do you have a source or is that a Mondegreen of yours? Seriously, let me know. I'v e been working on an arrangement of this song and playing with the lyrics.
This guy's too old to sing this over the top adolescent sentimentality. Wallfowers is mature sounding. And this guy DID fuck with the melody when he hits hurting my head. It musta been hard for Robi BG to sing this as he aged. Not because of his voice but it's for teenager to squeal out. What is Faith No More anyway ? They list this guy and another guy under the same name. Did they change lead singers. WTF. This guy sounds like Liza Minelli and the other guy sounds like Tom Jones. WTF.
@jaguarvibin I don't know what I mean other than this version sounds totally different from the live versions of Faith No More doing this that I thought it was another singer. Are they all the same.
@MindGroper ah, i see, yeah it's the same guy, singing live with this voice can be a bit harder, cuz he does kinda use a different voice, but you gotta remember Mike Patton is a man with many voices. he's amazing. also, maybe you saw a more recent live version which can be explained by him becoming older, and not being able to do it EXACTLY the same anymore.
@jaguarvibin Thanks, I don't know much about Patton but from what I've heard and what you said he can sing anything from cafe, to rock to stage show style. Interesting....appreciate the info.
@MindGroper I just wanted to somehow exclaim that I underestimated your opinion in what concerns the vocals of this song, which you expressed through your comment. Something about not being very good for some reason. Because I believed, at the moment I read it, that you just don't understand enough about it, considering Mike Patton in usually above any question, not only by my personal opinion and his and FNM's fans, but also by specialized critics and music professionals.BTW, it means "shit!"
@locoawise Thanks for getting back to me on that. I've just been finding out about Patton and FNM since I found the video of the guy in the tv show lip synching the Patton version. I thought the guy was really singing, got confused and started trying to find out who was singing this version. I like the way Patton gives the song a powerful show tune sound . Looking at other videos of Patton he seems to be in touch with a lot of different ways to put over a song.
So I went to check out the Wallflower version. Terrible in comparison. Granted, I am a fan of patton. He is love or hate. The wallflower version is just that dweeb butchering the original by dropping down when the melody rises up (the whole world living). Why? Bad choice. The original melody is pristine and concrete for a reason. It works, it is near pop perfection. Why fuck it up? Patton stylized it by singing like an emotional diva, but did not fuck with the melody. 'Nuff said.
@zombiejax is it because mike patton can't handle the change from pianicimo to forte faster than your brain can handle?and looking at the time frames of the two bands, FNM was probably one of wallflowers inspirations, as they were too alot of popular music.
I don't know if I'm alone here, but I interperet the lyrics (originally by The Bee Gees) to be from the perspective of Lucifer and his fall from Heaven.
Woh I like a lot the Bee Gees version but, I have to admit, this one is far better. What a voice !
