I just went to one of his shows just because ZZ Top was there. Kept an open mind when the stage changed hands. I had never heard Tom Petty much before, but when they opened with this, I knew I was gonna enjoy them!
That's it. I'm gettin' that 12 string electric so we can play this and those great Byrds tunes. He was considered 'New Wave' at first. How does one go from new wave to being in a band with Bob Dylan and George Harrison ? Petty is ROCK.
Listen for great music like this on a new radio station called "OffTheCharts" - featuring 70's (and some 80's) lost hits and chart wonders!
Go to Live365.com, type OFFTHECHARTS in the Search box and click on the station logo. The audio stream should begin. Become a VIP member and listen commercial free!
i want a copy of the book... has anyone seen the docu that peter bogdonavich ddi on tom and the heartbreakers? it is a must see, long but well worth it. caught it on sundance in 2009
What I love about this song is this: it is the kind of lyric you write about a woman who is so beautiful, whose sexual power is so vast, that she attracts the kind of men who see such women as prizes to be won, as mere trophies. "She might need a lot a lovin'." "She had to see something flash everytime she smiled."
@a456987 I was thinking the same thing. I don't think that's too far-fetched, either. I know they didn't get along, but it's not like they absolutely hated each other's guts. They put their differences aside and played together for the HOF induction in 2001(?). By the way, does anyone know where I can get a video of their performances at the HOF induction? I can't find them anywhere. Stan's the shit and I appreciate even more every time I hear him play.
I just read in the book "Interviews With Tom Petty" that their record company wanted the word 'cocaine' switched to 'champagne'...Glad they - ahem - didn't back down.
Thank you so much for posting htis video!! We just watched Part 1 of this concert on PBS Soundstage!! Tom Petty rocks on into the future with a commanding presence, fabulous voice and great presence!!!!
I agree they should have had this song on gh3 atleast or put in on a rockband... They are too great to not get little notice like they do when it comes to stuff like video game!! Excellent observation!
You know, Tom has had this astonishing track record of being able to carry that Byrds/Searchers/60s garage band sound into the 21st century without ever sounding dated or like a nostalgia act. He's got great players in his band, too. Top-notch. Thanks stratslinger for the send.
I love Tom Petty. definitly one of the best artists out there. it looks like he plays the same chord through the whole song. i bet this song isnt hard to play at all.
The older he gets-the better he gets. He looks so happy and the crowd is loving it! This show sounds a little better than the ones I have seen though. Guess that was just the recording equipment?
This documentary is so good that even though I bought it, here I am watching it on youtube. A total must have, and a steal at 30 bucks. I would have happily paid 3 times as much.
dude one of my favorite petty songs and definetly one of my favorite mike campbell rickenbacker tunes. I agree, I must put this on my myspace. Please let us embed godammit!
