  • Slight update: I'll be redoing this tutorial soon using 2.5 and the new community plugin, along with a big series of tutorials about Blender its self and how to use it + different techniques if anyone's interested. Check back on my channel later once I get everything up and running. :)

  • @RoboTyphoon1403 Everything is doable, except blender 2.5 does not have the feature where you can connect 2 faces so easily.

  • Could you please make a tutorial for how to make models with animations into scource, im making a portal mod and i need a camera sceene. So im gonna do it like unbrokenjack and make a cube that follows the path the camera shall go, and then in hammer, parrent the camera to it. This tutorial was really helpful btw, much easier to make models now :D

  • I got my model to show up (FINALLY), but my texture(s) didnt work. I did everything the same as you did except I put all of my compiled model files into an addon folder. I have everything set up correctly for an addon;

    Folders:

    -Models

    --Has no subdirectories and all of my model files

    -Materials

    --"models" subdirectory

    --"malefor"(Name of my model) subdirectory

    ---"fc0d0081.vtf" and "fc0d0081.vmt"

    And in blender, I set the material name to fc0d0081.png. Default texture in-game. Help?

  • @Dvondrake292 Ive tried renaming it several times to several names (including the ones you listed) and the only thing that I have gotten out of it is making my model entirely invisible instead of the default texture. Also, I tried rigging the model (I eventually want it to be a ragdoll) and the SMD export script crashes everytime with this in the console: [--SEE NEXT COMMENT--]

  • good thing you said that on 07:10, that you should name the material the same as the texture (and model I assume).

    I had been looking for hours why it could never find the vmt when I open my model in the model viewer,

    then after changing the material name and exporting&compiling again, it all worked.

    surprisingly i can see the headcrab and it worked!! :D

  • @rayman1014 Now I don't know exactly how to fix it. But, I DO know that the origin for the TF2 hats are far away from the hat itself. To be more exact, it's way below it, as though the origin would align with the player's feet.

  • I had a lot of trouble following this tutorial, as everyone else clearly is.

    After a long process of unnecessary struggling, I finally got to the end. But the .bat file isn't recognizing wherever I run it from. If I run it from my desktop, it says that it cannot find the specified location, and then proceeds to show the desktop path. If I run it from the folder with all my files, it gives a similar error with the correct path.

    I did everything right. What's the problem?

  • Hate to throw another question in but...

    my models is in game, but acting weird. I can shoot it and hit it, and it rolls around and such, but I can't pick it up, and when the round restarts it doesn't go back to the spot where it came from.

  • okay so I simply saved the 2 other scripts from your website into separate notepad docs and i have all my info for my gun mod in one folder BUT-

    When i go to export the hl2 smd option isn't there

    I have the smd file opened with notepad and in the blender folder

  • When we save the idle.smd and material.qc, we have to give them the model name dont we? (In this case camera.smd and camera.qc)

    but when I spawn it in game, it looks like the textures were rendered inside leaving the outside invisible (like I can see into it)

    I recalculated the normals outside, but I may have rendered the UV map before i did that and never redid it. Could that be the problem? If not, do you have a fix?

    The contents of all the files mentioned are linked in the description. It's literally just a matter of copying, pasting, and changing a couple names so things are referenced properly. What's not to understand?

  • @Dvondrake292 Sorry, I didn't really specify much :p The thing that's confusing is that you switch from VTFEdit to Notepad++, but you make no mention of it, so the viewer doesn't what program you're in or where to write it, or save the files.. It's a little thing, but if someone puts the files in a wrong place or saves it incorrectly, the .bat file won't work. I had to do a lot of testing to finally get the item in. I don't want to seem ungrateful though, it was a really awesome tutorial! :3

  • How do you execute 2:40? How do you select faces outside of the mesh currently selected in Edit mode? Does it have anything to do with the button you clicked before saying to select the face you want the mesh to attach to?

  • You mentioned idle.smd, which would be a bone animation. I figured I'd mention that the exporter throws me errors if I try to export something with a bone in it.

  • Has anyone had success with rigged models? When I compile all of my bones except the root bone are removed and I get hundreds of errors looking like this:

    WARNING: too few bones/vert (0) : it has no bones!

    Also, by experience, source has been fine with verts and parts of faces sitting inside other polygons. not sure about whole faces though.

  • Yea I've modeled before. It's very hard because I don't have XSI I'm no millionare and I used to make ragdolls in 3ds Max before my license expired. I remember assigning smoothing groups to separated meshes that were tied to specific bones. And is there a way to get the default Valve biped into blender!?

  • But what about phys models for ragdolls? Facial rigging!?

  • I have absolutely no idea how facial rigging works as I've never done it myself, however phys models for ragdolls are exactly the same as phys models for static objects. Why would they be different? Do you know how to model?

  • @picaticatara Yes, however this script has nothing to do with QC files. You can make those yourself in Notepad, and they'll function the same regardless of what you're exporting from.

  • You have to rig the collision meshes to the armature.

    facial rigging is done by exporting as vta I think.

    There is a modification of this script, that supports this.

  • Yes. Bones export properly by default, and you can export animations from the action editor.

  • How does the exporter recognize the end of an animation? Or do you give the end of a sequence in the qc file?

  • It uses the action editor, so just however long the selected animation is that's how many frames it'll export.

  • You need to type in the material name in 7:17 otherwise the exporter will give you an error. Also, in the qcfile you must give the path to the materials!

    $scale 4 makes 4 times as big

  • I haven't tried 2.5 myself, so I wouldn't know if the script works in it. Once 2.5 is officially released, if the script doesn't work properly in 2.5, then I'll fix it up best I can.

  • @Phygar1 you can copy an object or a load of vertices by pressing shift and d together. to make something new entirely press space and choose from the stuff that comes up! :D

  • To create a .blender directory (you gotta make it) enter .blender. the trailing period tells Windows that .blender is the file name not the file extension and you have no extension.

    If using Linux, Mac or any Unix system this isn't an issue you can just name it .blender

    But, yeah you gotta create the directory yourself.

  • It's kind of obvious. You save everything into one folder--wherever you want. You use NotePad, and the names of the files are in the link that has the contents of the files.

    Everything on my model is smoothed in-game and in the SDK model viewer ;_; I'm getting no hard edges at all, no matter what I try in Blender. It's not a VMT-controlled thing, so do you know what's wrong?

  • Use the edgesplit modifier, easiest to test is to put everything on smooth, and use the edgesplit modifier to define the sharp edges. Then apply the modifier and it will export nice and sharp (note some extra edges will be added)
