Bit cavalier with his trombone, that lad. No real bandsman would carry it around one-handed, without a case, and perched on a bike. No wonder he has trouble keeping it functioning later in the clip.
excellent film about the thatcher years and the murder by her of a sense of community, pride and honour in the darkest years of post war britain. I still feel for the miners and there families, Thatcher was a mass murder of a way of life!!!
Saw a superb version of this on the stage several years ago at Theatre Clwyd in Mold, directed by Terry Hands, my son was in it. one of the best productions i have ever seen,
@MrWalker87 its a film about the 1970s when coal pits were closing down rapidly..and they had a great brass band which is legendry to coal pit towns in the uk!..well we only have one coalpit in whole of uk now,,
@skindrew thanks 4 telling me that but I've known wat this film is about since it came out lol and the comment was wat danny said at the end of 1 of the songs. Its better if the coal mines came bk cus 1 day we're all gonna run out of this stuff n then where will we look to for fuel then? just blame the daff twats that keep shutting em down!

dont blame thatcher scargill was the biggest twat who didnt care.thatcher did more than the bunch of idiots trying to run the country now. i think the music makes you feel that way out
ha ha ha NO!! Although bad the labour government today pails in comparisson to the abhorece of Thatchers government.
thousands of people now arent being kicked out of their jobs, Thatcher more or less destroyed the north, and when EU contries offered money to help out the remaining companies Thatcher refused it!!!!
Oh, and in hospitals i dont see many people on trollies in corridors any more, or people dying of cancer before they can even see a specialist, let alone a surgeon DO YOU?

I made a comment like this recently on another Brassed Off video, and I forgot the answer:
the seating
why are the baritones and euphs behind the horns? Typically, the alternative seating puts horns/flugal on the right hand side with baritones and euphs in the middle.
we all need to get our fingers out of our arse and stop fartarsing about. the government can't do it we have to do it ourselves. bit of old fashioned pride in what you do for a living (whatever it is) and let's get on with it.
Yes your right of course . it is i just get so fed up with folk going on about thatcher . that is over 20 years ago . it is the cunts at new labour we need to keep at so DONT VOTE LABOUR TOMMORROW ALL BEST FROM the rep of yorkshire
there is no other alternative to labour you would have to drag my dead hand before i would vote tory there should be a total no confidence vote in general for all political parties
you right again i am 50 now and up two 12 years ago allways voted labour . this time i dont know probally ukip or if english democrates are standing maybe them, socailist labour party arent standing in my area or it probally would of being them.
im 38 and i can can remember is the miners strike and how since then all our comunities have gone down the pan nothing has improved where i live since so sho do we vote for ??????????
The real question is would you vote Conservative ? Think about it, you are questioning Labour policies, so that means you see a difference in the Labour party, which is a lot different from what it was. Much the same as The Conservatives, they are a lot different from what they were 20 years ago :)
hey up all you twats who been defending brown the clown and new labour . i bet you have red faces now . you seen what a load of cunts they are . especially elliot morley and that Fayebeanl hamilton a leeds labour mp. just plain stealing from us, why does a labour mp have a name like fayebean you know he is a cunt with a name like that just a load of posh criminals .yorkshire say to labour FUCK OFF YOU THEIVING TWATS

I've always enjoyed that scene where he rides with his bike, son on the back down to band practice, busy mouth-trumpeting the tune. I regularly do the same on my bicycle, although these days I usually whistle so as not to confuse other cyclists and pedestrians.

I used to play tenor horn and the brass band I was in regularly had this piece on the bill. When the four of us on those E - Flat horns opened up the sound was brilliant..if I may say so myself :P
The arranger of the brass band version of the floral dance, played here, is by derek broadbent, very very high in the brass band world, hes adudicated(soz bout spelling) all the big cot, and ive had the pleasure 2 play wiv him :D
Know what you mean. I used to have both my grandfather annnnd father in the brass band with me. Grandfather retired, and dad quit...I'm sadly alone now...
Pete Postlethwait and the others are fantastic in this film. This whole film is so real, it makes you feel like you are there - I know it's only a film , but.... matey's wife scalding him for Mr Chuckles, reminds me of home sweet home LOL.
it's a different variation on the brass band set up, and it is correct. this set up or the other set up that you are familiar with are both equally used just as much. my band plays in that set up as well, however as a euphonium player, i wouldn't mind if we got to sit on the end instead of being hidden away!
i thought they sat like this in the movie, because, then they could get all the actors to sit together, if you notice the basses, they sit like 1 BBb 2 EEb and then the 2 actors.. same with the trombone group, they are sitting 2. Bass 1. with "Phil" playing 2. well my thoughts anyhoo... Cheers!
This formation is almost the same as the 'Broadasting Seating' devised by Denis Wright back in the 1950s. He came to the conclusion after many experiments that this formation sounded better when broadcast on the radio than the traditional one. Details are in the 'Complete Bandmaster' Dr. D. Wright. He was of the opinion that the traditional arrangement was done that way to show off the 4 corner men ie Top Cornet, 1st Euph, 1st Trom and to a lesser extent the Solo Horn.
@sokki88 Grimethorpe were the band used in the film but the actual in-film band is Grimley (no idea if that's spelt correctly) Colliery Band, a fictional band for the purpose of the film.
@sokki88 I think he means the band has been in going that long,,since the 1818..not with the same guys,,but its a coal board/pit brass band,,thats used to be one of our heritages in the uk,,now we have only one mine open in all of the uk!..thats when the itial band started in 1818 when the coal pit opened
I don't play tuba, i play cornet - easier to carry :P, still love this tune tune though. I think it's strange how Grimey chosen to play B&R's theme tune.
