  • There is so many great versions of this song, Seekers, Hayley Westenra, others and I love them all but this one always comes back to me....

  • you have to turn your volume way up to hear it.

  • @winggoddess this was recorded on VHS tape in the early 80's, (played over and over again to within an inch of its life) then transferred to the computer, then uploaded to youtube, turning your volume up isn't much to ask for when all's said and done...

  • @richpat i wasn't complaining. i was just letting people know to turn up their volume, so they don't come here and think there is no sound, or that there is just static like that person down below did.

  • Whatever happened to Max Boycegraves? There was more to him than this, he used to perform footstomping folk songs, stomping about stage with a gigantic leek, wearing a red & white bar (rugby) scarf. "I was there" was his catchphrase

I would have liked to have seen the Ruth Madoc clip, pre Hi De Hi, presumably

  • ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN GET IN TOUCH WITH HER?

    jimbronxny

  • @jimbronxny In the more info section above it shows she has a new cd available and a link to her website you could try there

  • Can't hear nothing but static.

  • @equitably

It's bad sound I agree, but if you can ONLY hear static there's something wrong with your comp/speakers or whatever. This was recorded from TV back in the early 80's and played and played and played, not too bad I think and better than nothing.

  • I first heard this in the late 70's sung by Jennifer Warnes, still the best version, although I don't know if she ever recorded it. She appeared on Los Angeles radio station KPFK, the program was Folkscene, hosted by Howard and Roz Larman. Mary's voice is great.

  • Are you sure this is from 1983? This was how Mary Hopkin looked and dressed in online videos from 1968 - early 1970s.

  • @Bigwave2003 Hello from Welsh Wales. Yes I am sure I was sat in the audience. She still looks as lovely now and still sings like an angel, have a look at her official website at maryhopkinDOTcom mary has also been releasing her back catalogue of unreleased material, Wonderful music.

  • This is such a pretty song! I can't help but see the look she gives him when he sings "Neether" and she sings "Nither" at the 2 minute mark.

  • LOL - yes and the smile!

  • the best performances of this nice song were done by two counter tenors : Alfred Deller and Andreas Scholl.

Une remarquable adaptation française est d'un néo-zélandais : Graeme Allwright accompagné à la harpe celtique par Alan Stivell en 68.

  • La Mer est Immense. My ex-wife (French) loved Graeme Allwright. it is quite beautiful.

  • Unfortunately, Neil Lewis has recently died. We will not see his like again.

I love you Neil and we will all miss you.

With John, You, Jim, and all, The Dogs Bollox are now jammin again.

  • I am really sorry to hear this news. First time I saw neil was way back in the early 70's around the Bridgend area. cannot recall the venue.. Then many years later here in Barry ... THank you for the music Neil

    All the best

    Pat and Chris

  • hi, first time I saw Neil (Jim) as we used to call him, I went to the cinema with him in Bridgend when we were both 15. I was born in the same year as him, 1953. He gave me a peck on the cheek along Merthymawr Rd. I think we saw 'The Third Man' . He was my first boyfriend. Please reply Pat or Chris to let me know whereabouts you came from in Bridgend

  • Mary Black does a cracking version as well!

  • I had not heard her version but I have now... really beautiful, thanks for the pointer...

    All the best from Wales

    Pat...

  • Thank you for your comment, It is a lovely version of the song.

  • Thanks for sharing such a beautiful song!!!

  • She does have the voice of an angel, she still does, we are so looking forward to some new material from her,

    Very best wishes

    Pat

  • She's been the angel that sang in my ear since 1968--thx to Twiggy for discovering her and Paul McCartney for putting her on Apple records.

  • Thanks for sharing this...haven't seen it before

  • The live performance of this song is so amazing, the picture quality is not important (even black and white). Thanks for posting.

  • What a shame such a bad quality for this nice song

  • recorded in 1983 on VHS tape.

Stored for 25 years then transferred to disc,

    Then from Disc to computer.

    Then from Computer to Youtube

Now if you have anyway of doctoring my old VHS tape and magically improving the quality I will gladly post it to you!

  • At the risk of stating the obvious, Mary Hopkin truly does sing like the beautiful angel that she is. I could almost see the wings of angels and a Divine glow surrounding her

  • i remember mary hopkins debut on the hughe green show oppotunity knocks i think it was she was fantastic then and i'm sure she still is, what a unique voice

  • What a great piece of classic tv viewing - and the song is first class :-)

  • she has the best voice ever , my dads fav

  • there is only one person who i think has an even greater voice than mary hopkin, and that is ofra haza. but both are super excellent, no question about it

  • "The Water is Wide" is Karla Bonoff's original

adaptation of an olde Enlish Traditional, named: "O,Waly,Waly". My son sang it today.June 14,2008 @ the premiere of The Wisconsin Renaissance Faire & also has recorded it on CD entitled 'Samirah'. Very

    Touching song.- Penny

  • See below from the contemplators website

The song was orginally Waly, Waly, but in the 19th century came to be known as The Water is Wide. The song was published in 1724. O Waly, Waly is sometimes reported to be part of a longer ballad, Lord Jamie Douglas. However, Douglas was first published by Herd (1776) where it states it is to be sung to the tune of Waly, Waly, so it is fairly certain that Waly, Waly is the earlier tune.

  • richpat, Thank You. I know, that it was original "O,Way,Waly'-olde Engish Traditional..Different versions-we have all.

My son sang the original in college.Thank You,

    again, - Penny

  • The voice of an angel.. and I dont mean Max!

  • LOL funny comment!

Poor old Max, but he does have a "Cherubic" face now doesnt he!!!

  • "Cherubic" ?? what's that?or what does it mean?

  • A person, especially a child, with an innocent or chubby face

  • Cherubic? Yes she is.

What a beatiful, sweet, and kind woman, mary is a heavenly blonde angel.

    Thank you, richpat for posting

  • This video takes me back to the good times, love, gentleness, respect and many other things we had then. Many young people would now struggle even to understand. Thanks for this short clip of a time now lost

  • An angel here on earth!

  • I'm more interested in seeing my mate playing in the background, Neil Lewis. I must admit though, I used to fancy the pants off Mary.

  • Neil Lewis and John Luce were the stars, i was watching on BBC2 Wales this evening a Max boyce concert from 1981 excellent!

  • Thank you two.

A lover of Mary Hopkin in Japan.

    Ku

  • Forgotten what a lovely voice she has, thanks!

  • The melody of this song is quite similar to a Neil Young song called 'Mother Earth (Natural ANthem)' from album 'Ragged Glory' recorded in 1990.

  • This is a really old folk song dating from around the 1600's, not sure if its Irish, Scottish or English, It does have a few titles, not sure which one is more correct than the other...

  • I remember watching this! thanks for posting
