I think that understanding is extremely important; however, an emphasis on introspection over action does poes the risk of passivity and self-absorption. Understanding of any issue will never be perfect, so perhaps it's also necessary to understand which issues should take priority, and when and how to take action.
had I approached him in that tormented state of having been given a drug by doctors that was making me "crazy"...he would have shrugged and say "I can not help you".....truly, so much for compassion.
I was misdiagnosed as "bipolar" for a hormonal imbalance, which as it turned out was only effectlvely managed by chinese medicine...being put on the "pysch drugs" in my late teens early adulthood made me exhibit bizzare behavior I only exhibited upon having been administered psychotropics...psychosis being listed as a rare side effect of the drugs...
how deeply entrenched is the persecution of those branded "mentally ill"...the making light of, the making fun of...the "good natured" derision...this man is supposed to have achieved a level of compassion through years of meditation...but he still makes fun of those unfornuate enough to hav...e fallen through the cracks and been labeled inhumanely..and will not help them..he would usher us off to psych wards if we had approached him in a spiritual crisis..so much for "compassion"...
..how very "compassionate" of him at 15:15 in the video..such "loving kindess" I have not been so privledged to see before....teaching our monks and nuns how to recognized "nutcases?" when they come to see them for help..*pause* *chuckles* ....what does this man know about compassion???
@alternmedgirl - hello. It shouldn't really be the case of putting our ego first and taking such words into ourselves. What he probobly means is that the mind can only know itself and help itself, so it is not about 'help' from the monks you can recieve. How could he ever help you with *your* own mind? he can only change your attitude toward some problems, which he apparently failed to do in this talk ...
@usresidentsarestupid you are greatly misperceiving the gravity of the rhetorical issue at hand.THE WORDS WE USE CARRY POWER.... the words of a promiment religious figure spoken in public carry enormous power..by exacerbating the marginalization of an already dehumanized population by being careless in one's rhetoric he is undermining human rights
@usresidentsarestupid Ajahn Brahm knows how to be diplomatic & very careful in picking his words when a human rights movement he supports calls for it---e.g .concerning gay rights--it is not EGO motivating my objection, but concern over his undermining the human rights of those labeled "mentally ill" by being careless in his speech-
@alternmedgirl - really, I don't think that this kind of interpretation is very common ... don't you think it sounds a bit too hard? to me it looks like he just tries to bring an important issue in a positive manner, rather that intending to offend anyone. I'm sorry if you felt offended, personally I don't see it there.
@usresidentsarestupid... under you reasoning a black person objecting to his racial group being labelled a "nigger" in a public forum would equally be entrenched in EGO for his objections ..or a gay person objecting to being refered to as a "fruit" or "pansy"...
@alternmedgirl - that's what you say. I just think that we should not get everything THAT serious. Some of us tend to have quite harsh sense of humour, but it has its positive sides - it allows you to get the problem immediately rather than sleep during the talk, isn't it?
it's happiness and everyone have rights what to decide in life...could anyone in here just respect that part? why arguing this and that, ajahn told us to be compassion,,let it the people the way they are, the enlightenment will come soon or later to them :) for me, this person is my angel's
The Creator of the world never concern about the world being over populated. The Bible never address this issue or the global warming. The Bible does address that 1/3 of the world population will be destroy in the End of Days b/c of evil men. And the Bible does address of Judgment which is to come upon man kind b/c of rebellion. God govern this world by his law & he will execute justice & judgment upon the children of disobedience. Sorry to be a messenger of bad news. Only hope is in Yeshua.
Buddhism is on the incline and Christianity is on a decline. It's true! Yeshua said, " Wide is the way that lead to destruction and narrow is the way that lead to life." The Bible tells me that there will be a One World Religion to be form, including Christianity sucked into it. But true bible believers will not be among the One World Religion. The Bible also tells me that the god of this world have deceived the whole world to believe in a lie. I have no hate for Buddhists.
Ajahn Brahm do you know Ajahn Benton Pandito? He is an American Buddhist monk last time I seen him was in San Diego, Ca five year ago or more. I am his student and looking for him. Oh, nice video. Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu

I emailed the Buddhist organisation of Western Australia but got no reply. I said this guy needs to meditate more, he comes across as judgemental and self rightous.
i think this guy spent 9years in thailand meditating, plus plenty more in Aussie.
I can understand why you'd call him judgemental, but hey, who's perfect?
Goenka had a good metaphor for this sort of thing... Someone serves you a great dessert but it has raisins in it. you cant stand raisins. do you throw the whole pudding away? na... just dont eat them! the rest is great!
I think if a person finds a religion that they 100% agree with then they'll probably be the only one following it
You did not get a reply probably Ajahn Brahm is too busy flying all over the world to give talk which is far more more meaningful than to argue over spill milk. May you be well and happy
Well guys, I can see that you are very unconfourtable about my thruth. And there are people between you that say one thing, but thinks exactly the opposite. I wish that you do your best, and defend the life, all the life
Thank you Ajhan Brahm...what you said about learning to understand was amazing, because I was just struck with that particular miracle QUITE recently..yesterday..the things that have broadend...I am STILL very very very very amazed..huh?
Try telling that to the 54% of the French Atheist/Agnostics ... or 44% of Atheist/Agnostic Brits... and the rest of Europe, especially Scandanavia ... The only country that has a majority of Christians today is America ... 75% ... and well... that speaks volumes ... lol
Agreed w/ vaudeville. History doesn't support your logic. Christians and non-Christians alike have made changes the world over (positive and negative). Change is not the province of one religion.
Jesus isn't goin' ANYWHERE...plus most of his followers are FAR too concentrated on supression and
blame....therefore, the only place that they'll wind up is in their own obstacle's shaddow wondering what to do. Buddhism is the way, baby!! Even though I'm a Rastafarian. I STILL got luv for the buddha...and not just like that neivuh.
Yeah, but that doesn't mean that people won't exploit
that fact with JUST as much enthusiasm as you or that
the rest of the world will watch what they love get
CRUSHED by a non-caring society who with the HELP of your blissful ignorance are free to destroy this LIFE
in as many ways as their creative minds can brew. No..I think an actual SYSTEM will sufice...even though it doesn't actually exist...know what I mean?!
I'm not even done....Christianity is the "good" version of evil. Where is the connection to a man's
life experience? If you already KNOW everything..therefore your closed off to whatever "problems" come your way. JOIN US. Right?
That's wacked and bent...and WRONG.
Sure, I'm wrong to insult you, but Christianity is wrong in a MUCH worse and much more VAST way. See what I'm trying to tell you though? Of course, I'd GUESS the answer would be no.
God bless me...right...because I'm your enemey and you are supposed to pray for them. So...is WHAT my idea of changing the world...I didn't offer up a SOLUTION...I just stated that one is NESSISARY...FOR changing the world...if I read the holy bible...all I'd get is metaphores...which is what was always MEANT. I'm a rastafarian...I actually do read the bible.
Either keep your fairy tales to yourself, or actually try learning about the reality you live in... "We are both atheists, except I believe in one less God than you... As far as I know; KKK was concentrated in hate; wich is a form of being selfish. Being selfish is also looking only into YOUR own troubles, and not in those of your brothers.
That's TRUE...but Christianity ONLY looks into it's own troubles. Buddhism...not to take them down with me in this self-righteous babble neccisarily...considers the nature of the problem FIRST before trying to lend a hand and they...know what they're talking about. Christianity looks at what they BELEAVE and that's it. The world hardly exists to them...unless it's name be SATAN. That's a little selfish.
I don't beleive that you could find enough in your spirit to pray for me without labeling me WRONG. Brother is a term used between two beleivers of the same higher power...or at least who share common ground spiritually. If you can pray for me and open your mind at the same time...than I DO beleave your prayer would come through...if not...than it would be more of a curse than wouldn't it? Sympathy is dillusional and therefore NOT wise...nothing to gain...no momentum to base a prayer around.
