  • I love this ending - the "going home" - to me - is the promise in the phone ringing. I just feel like he's calling to tell everyone he's figured out where he belongs, and to stay right there he's on his way home.

  • This song was played at my parent's wedding. Even there I wasn't present for it, hearing it is enough to reduce me to tears.

  • What a great Movie!!!!

And the song... What else can I say for that....

  • i saw this movie as a 7/8 year old i felt like i was a better person for knowing about this movie, as a 34 drunk commenter i still feel this is one of the best movies made in the past 30/40 years

  • This song was not made for newcastle united it is just a song what they adopted i love this song and i aint a newcastle fan.

  • so ein genialer film :-)

  • gome on the toon

  • My favorite film..A&M..Good Bull!!

  • What a sad ending. After spending such a short time in a place, he let it's landscapes and inhabitance into his heart and he fell in love with the place. Now the rush-rush corporate world of which he was so found seems cold and sterile and lacks any kind of warmth.

  • Saw the film with my dad over Christmas- still an excellent film.

  • played this at my mums funeral too (my own local hero). she loved it and its a beautiful tune.

  • Saw this film twice, the 2nd time was funnier than the 1s! and what great song. Went to scotland in 06, fantastic country!

  • Saw this film for my first time last night; I usually don't watch the credits but kept them on for this alone.

  • first nine years in scotland....last 52 in california.....the phone ringing at the end just kills me every time....timeless classic

  • @UNDERGROUND2000

iN WHISKY TERMS ITS THE ONE YOUVE GOT TO GO BACK FOR!!

  • luv this film and its music so excited that I am actualy going where it was filmed the town in Pennan and the Beach which is in a totalydiffrent place but still! YAY!

  • This song reminds me of the Battle of Britain.

How the Spitfires "stuck it up" to those German Bf 109s !!

...... and look at all the "local heros" who flew them.

My hat goes off to them !! Bravo !!

  • This is an incredibly powerful scene. If you decide to do something different in your life, do it right now! As Barry Sheene said 'Don't wait for your boat to come in, swim out and meet the bloody thing' A wonderful film!!!!

  • Hey Theo , anytime you come back , you will be most welcome, my American friend .

I have watched this movie for 25 years and I feel the same as you .

Stirling Univ I know it very well indeed .

    From the old country !!!

    Highlander .

  • @nuafc legendary music :)

  • @nuafc Beautiful music.. hope you are coping with your loss..

  • @patrolowner Thank you so much.

  • I spent a year at Stirling University in Scotland '83-'84 school year. Went back to Texas A&M (not far from Houston, TX) and saw this movie completely unprepared. The last scene of him coming home to TX and calling back to Scotland... god - exactly how I felt. Still breaks me up 25 years later.

  • stirling uni massive!

  • @TheoC777 Gig Em Aggies!!!

  • @TheoC777 Big Hello ..all the way from over here in Gleighall' meenan (the celtic name for where im from and where this film is set)......hope you enjoyed our country :D

  • @LCStreetPhotographer Well where was it filmed? I go to the lowlands quite a bit and love it. I love this film and would love to sse the area it was filmed

  • @82bigall The village is the village im from. Pennan..its on the Aberdeenshire coast, though the beach isnt ours.....i had to do soem searching about but i found that most of the beach scenes were filmed at both morar and Arisaig on the Scottish West coast. If you come to Pennan to visit, dont eat at McCleouds unless you want to be off sick for a week. Eat at Danny Morrisons place.

  • "Local Hero" is the movie. I like the scenes in the local pub; everybody is always drinking to get drunk, but in a funny way.

  • Gotta see the movie!

Can someone tell me about what it is?

  • Local Hero is a 1983 Scottish film starring Peter Riegert, Denis Lawson, Peter Capaldi and Burt Lancaster. It was directed by Bill Forsyth and produced by David Puttnam.

The film is set in the fictional fishing village of Ferness on the west coast of Scotland. A young representative of an American oil company is sent to the village on a mission. The film features a notable ensemble of character parts.

  • This will be played at my funeral. Brilliant song.

  • really, really great ending, full of melancholy

  • Best British film ever made. Bill Forsyth and Co. you are geniuses!.

Went up around Arisaig when i was a kid in the early 80's, just watched the film this afternoon on the telly (almost made me cry!)...gonna' go back as soon as!

  • the saddest ending to any film i have ever, ever seen, and shows the fancy car and nice flat mean very little.

  • love it

  • just like wt they used to play at newcastle, i adore this song, thanks for postin a full version :D

  • Thanks for recording off TV cos I can't find big production version anywhere! Got Marks performance ok.

  • Going Home...

  • Happy birthday Mr Knopfler

  • the porche, the big salary, the fancy appartment,it meant nothing in the end.the saddest ending of any film.i fell in love with a place once but can never go back.

  • @bittenof Yeah so true the ending really spoke to me although in the beginning the main character really pissed me off lol

  • where can I find this film?

  • It's been a long way since then. Since i first came into great music, the kind of music that inhabits in your soul for the rest of your life. And it´s been such an enormous amount of records listened.

Now i can say that this only tune started it all and will be with me forever. Thanks, Mark, you were inspired the day you hammered this out from your mind.

  • Check out Tripping Up Trump on Youtube

    Real life local hero

  • Well done Mr. Forbes. Save the dunes!

  • Fantasic film. Great ending.

  • great ending, he just loves the people, the place, and misses it so much...

  • this is easily the best version of this song but i cant find it to buy

  • You can find it on the soundtrack of Local Hero, by Mark Knopfler. It's avaiable in Amazon ;-)

  • buy "Screenplaying" by the Label Vertigo!

Very good music with two great versions of "going home"! Greeting from Germany

  • Thats correct! I found this cassette version in 1995 in Malaysia and I fell in love straight away. And bought the CD version of the same title in 2003 for back up in case the cassette is spoilt.

  • I've had the soundtrack for as long as I can remember.

  • Beautiful.

Thanks so much for uploading this!

  • superb..

  • I love that song so much, whenever I hear it I get shivers up and dine my spine!

Also did you know the final scene of the village and the phonebooth was added in at the last moment and wasnt originally in the script? It's a nice touch.

  • Knopfler + Patterson = genius

  • I first saw this in 1983 and just recently purchased the DVD. It's an amazing film that is bright and cheery with wonderful understated humour...while in the end tugs at the sentimental heart strings...and the message to me..."One really doesn't know what they have until it's gone"...MK's whimsical yet haunting music just brings it home. I will never get over a lost love whenever I hear it!

  • My favourite film of all time, coming form teh west coast of Scotland but now living away from "home" it tugs at the heartstrings every time

  • Mark K. Is genius he can play this song and every time with different mood

  • sure

  • The ending of this film always gives me goosebumps. Wonderful.

  • watched this film last night!

Or can you ? You always have a choice.

  • Devastating in its irony, and a brilliant film. One of my favorites.

  • Totally agree. I didn't mean to be hasty, I just thought you were being sarcastic, thats all!

  • Just a crushingly sad ending. This movie is pure genius.

  • You're right, it's just a heartbreaking scene...

  • Well you obviously haven't seen the full movie then

  • Well you obviously haven't seen the full movie then

  • Seen it many times,SuperDandy. It's sad because he can't stay, because he found a life that he loved and lost it. Anyway, I'm sure you know that already. But hey, thanks for the corrective.

  • I totally agree with you. This is such a sad ending. What a great film overall!

  • i want to leave my stress out

life and move to that small

    fishing village.

  • I just love this movie. It's so rare that a film can make you laugh and cry, and can be watched repeatedly without losing its effect, in fact making me love it more with each viewing. Absolute perfection.

  • You said it all, Tara. You said it all.

    Thanks.

  • what's it called?

  • I couldn't agree more

  • A very special film. Mark Knopflers music is perfect.

  • The new DVD was released 1th May 2008. I've watched it twice already. What a film! And Mark Knopfler's music throughout the film is so sweet. There's a part deep inside all of us that is touched by tales like "Local Hero".

  • What movie?

  • Local Hero set in Scotland.

  • This song sends shivers down my spine! Great film!

  • Morris, I'm not paying you any more . . !

  • Would you give a pound nought for every grain of sand I hold in my hand ? I'd trade the Porsche. The job. All of it. I feel I'd make a great Gordon, too, Gordon. A timeless film that teaches us that conference time in Houston, or wherever our individual Houston happens to be, is just a waste of precious time....

  • Yay Local Hero fans! I agree with glw1967, I always come back to this movie to remember the humor, the magic, the romance of this movie (a love affair with a time and place and the people in it.) I love Ben!! I'm constantly quoting this movie to myself. No one else would get the refs! Thanks whiskeyfromthefield. "...There's something amazing every two or three weeks. I'll let you know the next time."

  • I was listening to the police scanner last summer, and after the dispatcher sent out a call regarding a wild rider on a motorcycle, the cop replied "Yeah, Ricky's out tonight . . !"

  • watch this movie at least once a year since I saw it in the theatre in '83. sublime and deeeeep. knopfler's work on Cal is also great.

  • This one and Baker Street are best saxo songs ever (for me)

Grande Mark Knopfler.

  • Musicians like these don't exist anymore nowadays... This music touches the most inner feelings and it is so perfect, brilliant, sentimental and everlasting. The mix guitar-sax is simply superb.

  • actually Mark Knopfler's still alive ;o)

  • This music should be protected by UNESCO as human heritage. Legend.

  • Bad quality video but superb film and music.

  • This ending's so fantastic. Magical.

  • Agreed!
