I love this ending - the "going home" - to me - is the promise in the phone ringing. I just feel like he's calling to tell everyone he's figured out where he belongs, and to stay right there he's on his way home.
i saw this movie as a 7/8 year old i felt like i was a better person for knowing about this movie, as a 34 drunk commenter i still feel this is one of the best movies made in the past 30/40 years
What a sad ending. After spending such a short time in a place, he let it's landscapes and inhabitance into his heart and he fell in love with the place. Now the rush-rush corporate world of which he was so found seems cold and sterile and lacks any kind of warmth.
luv this film and its music so excited that I am actualy going where it was filmed the town in Pennan and the Beach which is in a totalydiffrent place but still! YAY!
This is an incredibly powerful scene. If you decide to do something different in your life, do it right now! As Barry Sheene said 'Don't wait for your boat to come in, swim out and meet the bloody thing' A wonderful film!!!!
absolutamente sublime...y todavía no he conseguido ver esta peli entera...pero la banda sonora es espectacular, como todo lo que hace Mark Knopfler...
I spent a year at Stirling University in Scotland '83-'84 school year. Went back to Texas A&M (not far from Houston, TX) and saw this movie completely unprepared. The last scene of him coming home to TX and calling back to Scotland... god - exactly how I felt. Still breaks me up 25 years later.
@TheoC777 Big Hello ..all the way from over here in Gleighall' meenan (the celtic name for where im from and where this film is set)......hope you enjoyed our country :D
@LCStreetPhotographer Well where was it filmed? I go to the lowlands quite a bit and love it. I love this film and would love to sse the area it was filmed
@82bigall The village is the village im from. Pennan..its on the Aberdeenshire coast, though the beach isnt ours.....i had to do soem searching about but i found that most of the beach scenes were filmed at both morar and Arisaig on the Scottish West coast. If you come to Pennan to visit, dont eat at McCleouds unless you want to be off sick for a week. Eat at Danny Morrisons place.
Local Hero is a 1983 Scottish film starring Peter Riegert, Denis Lawson, Peter Capaldi and Burt Lancaster. It was directed by Bill Forsyth and produced by David Puttnam.
The film is set in the fictional fishing village of Ferness on the west coast of Scotland. A young representative of an American oil company is sent to the village on a mission. The film features a notable ensemble of character parts.
Best British film ever made. Bill Forsyth and Co. you are geniuses!.
Went up around Arisaig when i was a kid in the early 80's, just watched the film this afternoon on the telly (almost made me cry!)...gonna' go back as soon as!

the porche, the big salary, the fancy appartment,it meant nothing in the end.the saddest ending of any film.i fell in love with a place once but can never go back.
It's been a long way since then. Since i first came into great music, the kind of music that inhabits in your soul for the rest of your life. And it´s been such an enormous amount of records listened.
Now i can say that this only tune started it all and will be with me forever. Thanks, Mark, you were inspired the day you hammered this out from your mind.
Thats correct! I found this cassette version in 1995 in Malaysia and I fell in love straight away. And bought the CD version of the same title in 2003 for back up in case the cassette is spoilt.
I love that song so much, whenever I hear it I get shivers up and dine my spine!
Also did you know the final scene of the village and the phonebooth was added in at the last moment and wasnt originally in the script? It's a nice touch.
I first saw this in 1983 and just recently purchased the DVD. It's an amazing film that is bright and cheery with wonderful understated humour...while in the end tugs at the sentimental heart strings...and the message to me..."One really doesn't know what they have until it's gone"...MK's whimsical yet haunting music just brings it home. I will never get over a lost love whenever I hear it!
Seen it many times,SuperDandy. It's sad because he can't stay, because he found a life that he loved and lost it. Anyway, I'm sure you know that already. But hey, thanks for the corrective.
