  • I LOVE DRUNK EGGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I LOVE ARRANGEMENTS!!!

  • I LOVE THIS VEDO

  • I love Milton Delugg's arrangement.

  • Everytime I see this, hearing that intro and seeing Mr.Barris' face light up, my eyes fill up!! I am such a sap. I loved it every time Gene, Gene, the Dancing Machine was on. He was a favourite, as well as The Unkown Comic. There was another one, and I hve forgotten his name, who used to come out and sing, "I'm going to play my _____", and it would be a different instrument each time, and the judges would shout back, "What'cha gonna do?" each time he said it.

  • Every time I saw Gene, my sister and I jumped up, mom came running from whatever room she was in, and we all went nuts.

  • Dude was still a union stage hand at NBC in the 1990s... probably making $45/hr with the best insurance money can buy. So, I ask you. Who's really the fool here?

  • Greatest ....Show.....Ever.

  • Hard to believe that some folks back then thought that this show would destroy the moral fiber of the country.

  • I'll smile everytime I watch this. It was so cool to watch The Gong Show and not be sure when Gene would come out

  • hilarious

  • I miss 1977!!

  • you had to be there to get it.

  • I wish they would put these on dvd.

  • When I was a cop on patrol, I would try to time my lunch break to go my my folk's house and watch this crazy show with my mom. This was before VCR, DVR or Tivo...if you missed it, you just plain missed it.....and darn it, on Fridays, when Gene was most often on, I did NOT want to miss it!

  • wish we had t.v. shows like that now, instead of all the crap now.

  • Hey my name's Gene...so that's why my in grammar school my buddy's Dad would call me Gene Gene the Dancing Machine it all adds up now!

  • I think it was part of the fun , it was Fake tossing. Anyway, it was so great.

  • They don't make em like this anymore. Go Gene and Chuck!!!

  • @kathybaca he never got gong ! my man why did ppl thow stuff at him??

  • he never got gonged!

  • Milton DeLug and his band of thugs

  • "Thats ,Thats gene gene the Dancing Machineeeee" go crazy everyone!!!!!!!!

  • This sucks

  • @mrE883 you had to be there. seriously.

  • His expression is priceless

  • The 6 people who hit dislike after watching this video need to talk to their doctor about clinical depression...

  • Great stuff!

  • cocaine is a hell of a drug !!!!!!!

  • Gene makes me proud to be a janitor too. Just wish I could dance as good as him.

  • Complete and utter chaos!

  • Back then even the coke was on COKE!!

  • Chuck's reaction is pricesless. :)

  • Now THAT'S Entertainment!

  • How can you watch that and not smile? What a riot.

  • YEP ,THE GONG SHOW RULED!!!!

  • 6 people must be lame American Idol fans.

  • Sometimes when I'm watching 'AI' I think of this show. The goofiest show on TV. And yes I did watch it lol.

  • I finally understand why people call me Gene the dancing machine.

  • chuck is seriously coked out

  • @12lfme12 And continues to be.

  • Is it just me or does Gene look alot like Cleveland from the Family Guy lol

  • I used to lovvvve this show. Kinda like America's Got Talent of it's time

  • Cocaine is hella of a drug! Just look at them! Lol!

  • God Bless You,Chuckie-Baby!

  • Crazy bastard!! LOL

  • Everyone went bananas when the Dancing Machine came on the air! This was back in '77 when entertainment did not have to be vulgar or sexual to be fun. Sure miss those days.

  • Get down, Chuck!

  • oh god this reminds me of thunderbird wine sessions at 2 quid a bottle.

  • It was the 70's....Everyone was.

  • American Idol? bah! The Gong Show Rules!!!!!!!!!!

  • LOLOLOLOLOL!!! Chuck Barris was doing Hammer before Hammer!! LOLOLOLOL!!!!

  • Now why did they throw junk at him?

  • God help me I actually saw The Gong Show Movie - and enjoyed it!

  • This show was wonderfully goofy without being mean spirited. No show today can live up to the high bar the Gong Show left behind. Bless you, Chuck, you insane goofball. Bless you, Gene.

  • One funny show! Forgot how funny it could be. Love Gene Gene the dancing machine.

  • Whatever happened to this show!? I haven't seen it in ages!! I always had memories of this show when I was younger and when they were still playing the re-runs. I always found it hilarious when the judges would fight over the mallet and/or stand in front of the gong, trying to stop the other from gonging the gong, sometimes successful. And when Gene Gene came on, my mom would always crack up when Chuck Barry would dance. I wish this show was still on, I'd watch it everyday.

  • Sorry, Barris - my bad...

  • @DarkComet360 The networks are controlled by armies of psychologists and social engineers with an agenda to pacify us into a lump of inert humanity.

The Gong Show is way too stimulating and witty to bring back. Wit energizes higher parts of the brain and that's not what the mass programmers want. It's the same reason you will never see the brilliant slapstick violence of 1950's and 1960's cartoons.

It's the same reason today's cars resemble the lardy lumpenproletariat that drives them.

  • @InfiniteMushroom It's to bad though. I bet if someone was brave enough to re-kindle The Gong Show, it probably be one of the most popular shows on TV, next to all the other populars (people know their names). With a lot of money and the wit to do it, I bet they could bring it back - but they won't because it's to good...

  • its funny how people think that it was american idol that created the idea of allowing bad acts to audition and then show it

it was barris, who realized that the bad acts were more entertaining then the good ones

  • @brabon1

Except with AI the bad contestants are shown specifically to laugh AT not WITH, like in the Gong Show.

  • @knightflyte true...ai is more mean spirited...but the roots of ai and all the current talent shows stem from the gong show

chuck knew that people would tune in to see bad acts, and he also understood the importance of the judges

he is the father of reality tv, and guys like simon cowell should kiss his feet

  • Even 30 years later, I still can't hear this song without thinking about Gene. Barris was ahead of his time with the Gong Show.

  • @jhunter1163 barris created what today is known as reality programming

simon cowell should throw him some royalties

im still waiting for the emmy people to give chuck an honorary award

  • They don't make 'em like Chuck Berris anymore. The closest we have is Paula Abdul, but she's just a booze & pill show. I see Chuck and ponder the phrase "cocaine psychosis".

Gene Gene (who danced so well Chuck had to introduce him twice) was the rare man who, when his 15 minutes of fame came, was able to adequately fill the time. :)

  • America's Got A Dancing Talent Idol has nothing on The Gong Show!

  • I just happened to think of Gene and I knew I could find him on YouTube.

Thanks for uploading a great memory.

  • The wackiest, craziest, most fucked up variety show ever! A true masterpiece. No one will ever come close to this ever again...Was even better when they got rid of Gary Owens and Chuck took over the MC duties himself...oh how I miss these shows...And I agree with Albee1000; everything should end with Gene Gene.

  • Chuck goes crackers everytime Gene would appear. It's like everyone goes crazy when he's there, lol.

  • This show helped keep me sane during junior high and high school. Just the ability to let things go for a while and just laugh at it all--was worth a ton.

  • The Gong Show had the BEST stage band! Better than even the mighty Tonight Show's band with Doc Severinsen. The Gong Show stage band was the best with taking cues on the fly and I love their arrangement for Gene Gene's Dancing Machine bit.

  • Greatest Reality Show hey need to show the ORIGINAL or have someone that can do the job like Chuck Barras did... Which is going to be very IMPOSSIBLE!!! I always wanted to be Chuck Barris when I was younger....

By the way... I noticed on this clip there was a real man jumped on the stage during Genes Dance!!!!

  • You know, every show ever made should end with Gene. Lost, The Sopranos, The L Word - it should all just end with Gene Gene coming out and doing his thing.

  • "chuck 4 prez". so true.

  • Where's Chuck Barris when you need to smile?

  • gene was basically a stageworker who would dance for the audience during commercial breaks...when the gong show went away he worked withthe Tonight show......i remember him in a Tonite show skit when he came out dressed as Papa Doc douvalier and directed the band.

  • Beats the shidoutta American Idol! Those cats knew how to have fun!

  • The Gong Show was the ORIGINAL show about nothing.....Jerry Seinfeld didn't have shit on Chuck Barris....I loved it then and I love it now.....

  • Genius.

  • Chuck was so SEXY!!! Still looks good too. Saw him on the Today Show last week talking about the book he wrote about Della.

    Dawn

  • Always my favorite part of that show, when that music came up and and Barris went nuts.

  • fun as hell...I can watch this a dozen times i 1day

  • shows were great back then, the whole building is off the hook

  • Me and my brother used to watch the GONG SHOW back in the 70s when I was going to college. Gene Gene, the dancing machine was a staple.....

  • FACT: This is Eugene Patton, born April 25, 1932. He was a member of the stage crew. He was one of several amateur performers who would "warm up" & entertain the audience during commercial breaks. He danced to Milton Delugg's "Band with a Thug", while they played Count Basie's "Jumpin' at the Woodside" tune. UNFORTUNATELY, in 2001, he lost both legs due to complications from diabetes. He now walks with prosthetics & a cane.

  • I wish I could find the episode with Johnny Paycheck! I LOVED Gene Gene the Dancing Machine! You know...now just saying the name of the show "The Gong Show" makes me laugh! Forget "American Idol" we had THE GONG SHOW where if you sucked, you found out right away!!

  • wats dis song called? lol

  • Wats dis song? lol

  • Next to the Unknown comic this is the reason I watched this as a kid just so I could dance with him.

  • When Chuck bends over the wall thing he's probably snortin massive lines of blow!!!!!

  • Gene and chuck getting down together, need I say more! The best ever!

  • 0:15 what's with the MC Hammer walk? Good stuff.

  • That's a real old song----anybody know the name?

  • @ranran19701 It's a re-arrangement of Count Basie's "Jumpin' at the Woodside."

  • what's the name of that song?

  • I try to watch this one a day. Puts me in a real good mood.

  • This NEVER GETS OLD!!!! LOL

  • Look real closely and you can see that freak David Letterman on the panel. He doesn't get it. Wow, that over 30 years ago.

  • @yr2square Where's Letterman?

  • this is the most awesome thing EVER.

  • Cocaine is a hell of a drug, lol

  • shit tv might be more entertaining if everybody snorted a little H now!

  • this and the $1.98 beauty show were my favorites

  • I love it...the expression on his face when he's like oh...u know what time it is *dance dance dance*

  • I Really Wish Someone Would Put These Great Old Shows On Dvd.

  • @just1rick21072 No Chuck Barris produced shows are on DVD, can't figure it.

  • @just1rick21072 Me too!

  • @just1rick21072 I agree. This is old school.

  • I will never get tired of seeing this. This is great.

Lmao at Chuck crashing at the end. Gene Gene1, Chuck Barris, 0.

  • This show was the most fun to watch. I can't remember any other show that came close except maybe the Dean Martin Roasts. Chuck B. was the best!!!

  • Chuck appears to be on some type of mild stimulant, probably diluted coffee or else an ounce of coke.

  • Nah, he was just mad.

  • Comment removed

  • You can't tell me this guy wasn't stoned! One of the greatest shows on TV. Beats American Idol to death. Chucky B was like the Ed Sullivan of his day, but with drugs; he had no talent himself, but he sure knew how to put together a great show. BRING BACK THE GONG!!!

  • One show where you never knew what would happen next. GSN should pick it up...

  • Gong Show rules

    American Idol sucks

  • I agree, most of the talent on the Gong Show was much more entertaining and it was FUN!!!!

How many tv shows can say that these days? Any?

  • Gene was my Fave O Rite

  • Gene was my favorite because I thought that Chuck genuinely lost his mind in these bits.

    I was a simple child.

  • Oh, YEAH!!! I dearly loved THE GONG SHOW! Silly, stupid, and loving it! Once Chuck Barris loosened up and really started to have fun with his role as ringmaster (bringing on his daughter to introduce "my Daddy!"), it was great stuff.

  • I RAN! Six blocks home from school every day to watch the gong show. I loved this "stuff".

  • So did I.

  • Chucky was the coolest dude on the planet!

  • I wish I've could've been there just to say i saw this

  • Chuck Barris has some seriously funny moves. :D

  • Cocaine's a hell of a drug.

  • I Think They Were All On Something More Than Cocaine....But I Really Wish I Could Have Been There.

  • @MrZoomhead haha dude i said that exact same thing on another gene gene video.

  • LMAO...Chuck Barris is a TRIP! Best (and craziest)game show host ever! Loved watchin as a kid hopin to see Gene Gene...and of course seein Chucky Baby go insane lol!

  • back when tv and movies were original, awesome

  • @msymonds12 I used to see that show all the time Wow!! It was weird, but funny and entertaining. You don't know what will happen next. One time, the curtian opened. Paul Paulsen was sitting down. Banging two spoons against his leg. lol

  • This was a Great show!

  • ROFL!! I didn't know that was a REAL GUY out on the floor behind Gene! That's so hilarious! I never get tired of this show. When TV was entertaining.

  • This is your brain on drugs.

  • I will never get tired of watching Gene!

  • Ahh.The golden age of FREE TV!

  • yes this was a great time, when tv was simply fun

  • shame that Gene's legs were amputated. He was a legend!

  • @Xellchan Oh my! I didn't know that, so sad that the very things that made him a legend were taking away.

  • Yep. Fate is an ugly thing. The man was a diabetic and it was a time that this kinda thing was still unknown in medicine.

  • God bless ray garcia,we drank wine and saw chuckie.

  • Barris is dancing even better than Gene

  • This was just plain old fun, good time television. There was no need to be relevant, informative or mature. Gene, Chuck, and Jaye P. Morgan made this show a hit!

  • @cr78fan what about the "Unknown Comic"

  • Without question!!!

  • look (00:17- 00:22)... that's where Hammer got the Chinese Typewriter Dance Move from..Chuck was an innovator....

  • LOL, I think you're right!

  • Chuckie Started it all he was the best

  • @devynnwoods cocaine is one helluva drug!

  • When ever I feel a little bit down from my diabetes I just turn on Mean Gene and the whole day turns around. A simpler time when we all could just dig what was going on.

  • Agree 1000%

  • @chinito0401 So true. Too bad we can't relive those days.

  • The best! I wish I had the smoke and the dust that was clouding up this room!

  • Maaaaan I love this show...Geeeene Geeeene the dancin' machine!!!! Whatever Chuck was on back in the 70's, I want some!!!

  • gene gene the dancin machine, not chuck chuck the dancing machine, i say this because chuckie B is hogging the spot light, atleast on this clip. still love the show. gone but not forgotten

  • i agree

  • Man, I loved that show. Dance on Gene!!!

  • Gene is the fuckin' man.

  • Gene is the whole reason I started dancing. LOVE IT!!!

  • LOL!!!!!!!! Loved that crazy show!!!!!!!!!

  • Gene was the king of the dance floor!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • hell acted like this as president...i know to be that stupid he had to be on the ooh weee

  • That show was ahead of its time

  • I loved Gene Gene- watched it evrytime it was on, hoping he would come out!!

  • I was a kid in the 70s, and I was a Gong Show junkie from the first time I watched it, and this was the moment in the show I always waited for. The whole scene turned into a full-blown party when Gene Gene came out and Chuck Barris went nuts. New Year's Eve in Times Square? Forget about it!

  • you got to love the 70's!

  • Say what you want but the 70's rocked

  • Gene comes juuuuuust this close to inventing the Moonwalk a few years early!

  • It's like Gene Gene's act was more of a cue for everyone to go absolutely nuts rather than watch him dance. lol looks like a real party :D

  • And now, live, for the next 30 minutes(or full hour)Gene Gene The Dancing Machine!

  • gene gene was amazing ... but i also get a real kick out of Chuck Barris in this clip. he is genuinely full of joy the minute the band starts up Gene Gene's song -- you can't fake that shit!!

  • It was the joy of cocaine.....:)

  • No, you can'! Whoo Chuck wa havin some FUN.
