This place in Uzbekistan is called by locals "The Door to Hell". It is down there because the cavern was filled with gas. So they ignited it so that no poisonous gas could come out of the hole, and since then, it's burning, already for 35 years without any pause. Nobody knows how many tons of excellent gas has been burned for all those years but it just seems to be infinite there.

Yeah it's just underground gas. I think it was 1971 ish, geologists accidentally drilled into an underground cavern filled with gas. And to stop the poisonous gas discharge, they decided to burn the gas. So it's been burning for like 39 years. And the reason they haven't put it out is because Darvaza has no airstrip, the crater is too far from the capital to send a foam plane to put out the blaze.

they decided to light it to check for poison gas, they didnt realise how much there was. they wanted to go down but none would. they didnt mean to make that. it was leaking gas but they drilled to see if they could use this gas. its been burning for 35 years because gas keeps coming out. It probly wont stop for another 10-100years. Or less, or more...
