@Okielawman i know wright you can tell its a cotton mouth by the water snake markings water snakes resemble the cotton mouth but the cotton mouth has a spade shaped head spade shaped head=has venom
Definitely a cottonmouth, and a lovely specimen at that. Cottonmouths often have distinctive "racing stripes" over their eyes, as do their close cousins the cantils. Judging from the length of the tail I want to say that one's male. But it's impossible to tell for certain without catching the snake and popping or probing it.
He really is a beautiful snake if you choose to see the beauty. Did you ever get close enough to trigger his threat display?
Its a death adder if your in Aus, if your in US they have a way less venmouse sname that looks a bit like the addre called the cottenmouth ... so yeah
Don't listen to these assholes, just shoot the snake, or kill it with a shovel (or rake, garden hoe, etc). Non-venomous snakes are allowed to live in our barns, in pastures, and in ponds without disturbance. Venomous snakes are dispatched with extreme prejudice upon sight. The first time someone on your property gets sent to the hospital with a mystery snake-bite, you'll wish you had just killed the damn snake.
Except there are ALWAYS venomous snakes around, and statics show people trying to kill them are the ones who get bitten the most. Had rattlesnakes all over growing up, and there were NOT "mystery bites", only idiots who were messing with them.
It looks like a cottonmouth. ignore the snake lovers and kill it. It's very dangerous and there's plenty of non-venomous snakes that kill rats and rat poison is a good option too. Their conservation status is "LC" (Least concern, far from endangered species) and they are classified as varmints, which means it's legal to kill them year round.
@bimbolover28 I'm also a people lover, which is why I say don't mess with it. Let the professionals handle it. This snake is ONLY dangerous to humans when threatened, and as is typical of his species, he will stand his ground with his mouth agape, but he will only bite as a last resort. Which means you're most likely to get bitten trying to dispatch him. Just stay out of his way and have him relocated.
Then set rat traps. Obviously you need them if you have snakes.
Learn your snakes in your area ...Its a cottonmouth he's a venoumous pit viper snake. Stay away from him and keep your animsail away too. Don't kill him he keeps down on rats. HE WILL BITE YOU AND YOUR ANIMALS IF PROVOKED. Best to call someone that can remove him to a safe place. They live around water. If your dog gets bitten he will get very sick and swell up but probably wont die unless it is a very small dog or cat.
@SooperCherry94 shut up. does that look like the snakes home? If you came near it it would bite you, simple as that. It's not a mindless killing machine, BUT it is a major danger to people and absolutly unpredictable.
Does not look aggressive in this video. Cottonmouths' are a pretty docile snake if left alone. If you move toward it or mess with it, it will get scared and tell you to rethink your actions. ie: mouth gape, hiss, etc... Would not call that aggressive.
@MrBillybob96 I've seen well over 1,000 cottonmouths in all sorts of locations and I have never once seen one chase, nor have I heard of one chase outside of redneck tall tales and exagerations. I've seen nerodia (water snakes) go into a panic and start darting all over the place where someone might misconstrue as a chase, but those are not cottonmouths.
yeah it does look like a cottonmouth, I gotta learn to identify those before they open their mouth since I'm moving to Florida eventually..and if it opens its mouth it means I pissed it off

@MBJB07 a high percentage less dangerous than your average human being...any snake is only as dangerous as a human is ignorant...snakes don't kill people...stupidity does...any person who kills any animal out of fear is an ignorant asshead...and I'll shed no tears for their passing...
I would have killed that snake the moment I saw it!!! I know there are many snake lovers here but I am a snake hater and I kill every snake I see! I can't help it, I just hate snakes! I am like a rat terrier that sees a rat, they just go crazy and attack and kill every rat they see, I am the same way. Venomous snakes gotta die for sure!!!
Anyway, it was my first time to see two of them and never seeing a cottonmouth before, I was told all these 'horror' stories about them by my father and other people. I wish they had educational exhibits on venomous reptiles and truth vs myth to educate us on the animals. No one ever shows them to the public b/c they know a lot of people are afraid of snakes, esp venomous ones. I don't much know about them yet...so?
Yup, that would be a cottonmouth. And his "spitting" at you wasn't an act of aggression. It was a defensive act. Cottonmouths open their mouths wide to show off their fangs, as a means of letting you know that they are dangerous and you don't want to mess with them. Like all vipers, they bite strictly as a last resort, as venom is costly to produce and they need it for killing and digesting their prey.
Beautiful specimen. Decent size. Nice coloring and markings. He looked pretty scared.
@exquisite6 Nope. Perfect length, actually. Going by width to length ratio, anyway. Although his tail does appear to be fairly long. Not too long for a cottonmouth, though.
Somebody help me pleeeeassseee. I am going down to the farm again in a few days to help clean up our place. We own land a way away. I told my father I'd go down and help clean up the water overflow, but the snakes! They're all over the place and I need to remove or destroy them. We can't fish with them down there! And one chased after me today! I'm a female and not afraid of snakes but after today... :{ } AHHH!!
@silverbulletgirl29 If there are several venomous snakes on your land, then the best way to get rid of them is to set up mouse and rat traps. The snakes are there because the area is rich in food. And rodents are more of a liability on a farm than snakes anyway.
If venomous snakes are becoming a direct threat to you or your family, have them professionally relocated. Do not try to catch and kill them yourself as it only puts you at greater risk for being bitten.
@AtarahDerek Well, to be honest, I don't believe in killing an animal unless it is a 'direct' threat to a person. I do like the sound of 'relocating a few snakes' if necessary to fish down there. Anyway, the pond needs draining and cleaning and to be refilled. I want to clean up the land a little. I do find even venomous snakes interesting, just don't want to walk into a slew of them and get bit. They'd be useful for antivenom if I gave a few to herpatologists. They have snake boxes.
Also, cottonmouths will never pursue a threat; they will always try to get away from it. If a cottonmouth in the water is forced to swim past a human, they try to do so as inconspicuously and swiftly as possible.
Yes copperheads are venomous as they are a pit viper, but also a smart snake as it will more than likely give a dry bite much like a rattlesnake as a warning before giving a wet bite, However, the cotton mouth is not that aggressive, unless close to mating season as they are very teritorial during that time, but in North America the cottonmouth and timber rattlesnake are the most aggressive of all the pit vipers, with the copperhead and western diamondback being close to the bottom on the list.
@DeeplyMovinU Really? I thought the cottonmouth and western diamondback were reversed on that list, with the cottonmouth only being slightly more aggressive than the copperhead. It's all relative, of course, as pit vipers in general are non-aggressive.
@AtarahDerek In all my dealings, the cotton mouth has been the most aggressive snake to deal with, with the copperhead being the most docile, yet the cotton mouth will make a stand with his threating pose ( coiled mouth open) and won't back down while a rattlesnake will coil rattle and play a waiting game to see if you leave the area first before he tries to leave, and a copperhead will generally try to run to a hiding spot to make a stand. But meanest snake i have found is the Black Racer.
@ShepherdOfMusic ToxicRoomSnakes was referring to Copperheads not being lethal not the fact that the arent VENEMOUS, Although humans have died from copperhead bites it was due to more than one snake biting the individual.
@kylesreptiles Sounds to me like it was due to stupidity. I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say that the venom's effects were magnified by the fact that copious amounts of alcohol thin the blood and lower the immune system.
People saying they're "mean as hell" are delusional. Yeah, they look 'mean" when a giant creature unknown to them is trying to kill them. I can assure anyone who's walked around regions where they live that they've almost certainly walked right by them without even noticing.
Yeah, everyone did a good job identifying this cottonmouth. I saw the stripe down the side of its face through its eye. That's a great way to ID one. You can't always tell by the other coloration. I like videos like this one.
lol yep thats a good lookin cotton mouth looks prety healthy ;) their awsome snakes but known to be prety spazmatic i have several in my herp collection.
@chloegotflowie It's not an adder, it's an Eastern Cottonmouth; it's HIGHLY aggressive and is KNOWN to come at intruders of any size. A Cottonmouth's venom is EXTREMELY hemotoxic; if you don't get treatment asap, severe tissue necrosis (gangrene) can begin to set in.
@ToxicRoomSnakes Are you stupid? Yes the copperhead is VERY poisonous! I live in Texas and we have them everywhere. You need to get your facts right. As a matter of fact it is more poisonous than the cottonmouth/ water moccasin.
@ShepherdOfMusic He was giving a grammar lesson and being an asshole about it. The snake is venomous, not poisonous. Poison is ingested (swallowed), while venom is injected. You can swallow snake venom and as long as you don't have any cuts in your mouth or throat, you'll be ok. (I wouldn't try it) It is only when it is injected that snake venom becomes lethal. People who spend their time correcting that mistake are looking for an argument. Don't entertain them.
@ToxicRoomSnakes Venom falls under the umbrella definition of poison. It's not a poison in the traditional sense of the word as it has to be directly injected to take effect, and is otherwise harmless if touched or ingested.
Copperhead venom can be lethal to adults if enough is injected. However this rarely, if ever, happens. Copperheads and cottonmouths actually have some of the least potent venom of the North American snakes.
@ToxicRoomSnakes a Copperhead is indeed VENOMOUS and VERY much LETHAL you retard. I live in the backwoods of TN and have seen numerous people killed by copperheads.
@ToxicRoomSnakes That is a correct description of a Cottonmouth. However, Copperheads are also venomous snakes too. Copperheads and rattlesnakes are more likely to run if they have a chance and they only coil up and strike if they are cornered. Cottomouths have a NASTY disposition and will come at an intruder of ANY side. It's always a good idea to wear long, loose pants and tough leather boots when hiking in snake country. ;)

@ToxicRoomSnakes a Copperhead is indeed VENOMOUS and VERY much LETHAL you retard. I live in the backwoods of TN and have seen numerous people killed by copperheads.

@SHOCKNAWW
There hasn't been a recorded Copperhead fatality in the U.S. for more than 50 years, but okay.

It's always a good idea to wear long, loose pants and tough leather boots when hiking in snake country. ;)
