the 3d display is nice but not really necessary.
this video uses the kinect as the webcam replacement right? The relationship between where on the screen your partner's face is - and where on the screen you are looking/gazing - would reproduce eye contact quite well.
This way you can maintain mutual eye contact even when a webcam-video or avatar is actively moving around the screen.
