this is a form of knocking... rod bearings, and piston slap have certain sound, upper end is far lighter, piston slap is detected by a compression check when engine is cold.
that i believe would be connecting rods what your are talking about , this is when car is cold it knocks b4 the pistons and rings expand when the motor is cold
I believe that has to do with the temperature of the air/fuel mixture in the engine. And when because of the low temp. it ignites later and also achieves a higher cilinderpressure then normal. And that is experienced as engine knocking. I don't know if you meant this but here you go.
It's called piston slap occurs in high km engines due to the forces imposed on the piston on the power stroke it wears the side of the piston because of the angle of the connecting rod thats why a cylinder bore wears uneven, the reason it only happens when it's cold is because the piston is cold and is made from a alloy which expands at a higher rate than cast iron so when the engine is warmed up the noise stops.
My Mustang had some light piston slap only a week ago, got bad after 3 days and I immediately parked it and pulled the motor. Found a broken piston ring, 2 pistons with broken ring lands, and another piston with cracks on both sides of the skirt. The skirt would have broken off within a few hundred miles had a kept driving it. Time to rebuild your engine.
Better check to see if he also put the crank in backwards & the rods in upside-down-- DAMN, I can't BELIEVE how much I had to cut off those %&# journals! :-)
- engine always used 5W40 oil wich is too thick even with hot eather...
- i use it a lot in urban driving... while cold, almost every day.
so... the engine is a "undersquare" engine... 75mm bore on 90 mm stroke...
90 mm stroke is one of the longest piston strokes... so oil does not flow up there (in the vid) so often as a most engines... and only some d16Z (A5 i supose) engines have the oil jet that sprays below the piston
actually the "40" states that the oil viscosity will be like 10 centistoke thiker at degrees 100celcious than a 5w30 oil which is the oil viscosity that honda recommends, i would go there if i wanted some extra protection at higher tempretures which occur when you push the engine to its limits, i think that what caused the major damage was the 9krpm rev limiter, no matter what oil you where using thats 1200rpm over what the engine was designed for, when the motor is cold "5w" is right
also... the recomended oil for that matter is the castrol TXT Softec plus... that aparently does not exist... i am trying Edge 0w30 as it substitute, its has same specifications and is also the most expensive castrol but does not comply to most modern engines ( need less antifriction aditives because of emissions standards).. so my guess is that it egde... if having the same adivite cocktail as TXT, then is the oil to sustain this engines normaly

so is this what they call engine knocking ?

thats acutally SLAPPING. knocking is due to the main bearings on the crank
spoontuner 2 years ago
no, normally engine knocking comes from the valves needing adjusted.
tilex08 2 years ago
No.....Thats what you call piston slap. engine knocking in general can be from various things but it usualy a spun rod bearing.

u r correct, these guys r unsure of what the topic is... and EGR greatly reduces this problem during cold starts

:( mine sound like this, what can I do if I want to minimize the noise??? lucas oil??? ammm or what?

Too much power through?
To wear a mm of extra clearance! lol!
What was the real cause? was it a botched rebuild or just a joke.
Or had top fallen off piston?

i am looking for a good oil filter with good anti drain back valve to avoid that FUUUUUCKIng sound... to a d16
authmaax 3 years ago
i have a d16 that does that to..
do u know why this is?

in mine.. i suposed its derived from
- overeved it up to 9000 rpm
- engine always used 5W40 oil wich is too thick even with hot eather...
- i use it a lot in urban driving... while cold, almost every day.

to authmaxxx WIX makes good oil filters, no drain back even after every oil change ;) not like thsoe fram pieces of crap..

Piston didn't go bye bye. They guy who built the engine was a noob and used a std piston in a overbored cylinder. lol.

those grass engines must take a hell of a beating to need all that clearance. How do they sound when they warm up?
