@hotjazzjoe1 I would give you that Hidalgo is more percussively skilled than Torres, but Torres is definitely more musically gifted and expressive. The Kissimee video of Hidalgo is an amazing impressive conga solo, but Torres' 7 conga video is a song, in the vein of an orchestral piece.
@jfries289 You don't know what you're saying. The Congas aren't for making songs they carry and stablish the beat or the "tumbao" that's why their original name is TUMBADORAS. Sorry but Giovanni Hidalgo is the most musically gifted and expresive of all latin percussionists; he makes drop your jaw all the time, Samuel Torres plays nice but I can't see his heart no where in his interpretation.
@hardpeep An instrument is 'for' whatever it is used for. A conga is a piece of wood & leather that makes a sound when you hit it. One man uses it to carry and establish the beat of a song. Another man uses it (and six like it) to create a song itself. A guitar is used in many ways, is it not? You have the man who picks, the man plays rhythm, the man who plays fill, and all sorts of styles and uses. As I said, Hidalgo is an amazing percussionist, and Torres is an amazing musician.
I have to agree but there are different approaches to every player. Samuel brings an eclectic feel. Hidalgo one of the pioneers mimic that of David are more traditional. Playing was never a factor for the audience that was non percussive, but familiar with playing percussion or to follow the traditions of African, Afro Cuban or Latin rhythm styles of playing. That is just my opinion other may and will disagree.
Honestly we are just picking away at what is really a key factor here.
He is an incredible conga player.
Just to keep track of all seven and I repeat seven differently tuned drums are and manage so also bring not just hard playing but soft and a smooth tonal sound in my opinion is INCREDIBLE!!

man that was really really awesome. my brother spent 14 years in colombia (cali and bogata) and also spent some time in cuba and took lessons from some of the worlds best players. he has moved back to australia now and is untouchable over here but your performance made him look average.
