What an incredible band!!! I'm 22 from Naples and I listen Jamiroquai since I was 8-9... a relation between my ears and their music that won't never die!!! My only, eternal, regret is not having seen them live for example at Milan '93 or Phoenix '97, THE concerts, that I've founded and downloaded don't know how!! I have seen their only two years ago here in Naples, but it was a completely different feeling and you can understand the (musical) reasons..... Regards
The original band was Jay Kay (vocals), Toby Smith (keyboard), Stuart Zender (bass), Nick Van Gelder (drums), Wallis Buchanan (didgeridoo) and Alec Moran (pipeau). These are the founding members of Jamiroquai and were involved in the writing and production of the first album. Obviously, Jay and the other members past and present COLLABORATED on their songs. You can tell he is a real musician because his vocals and movements are 'inside' the music and not on the borders.
Absolutely amazing intro! I love how every time he plays a song, he plays it a little differently, and gives it another new spark. Thanks for sharing.
man remember when cosmic girl and virtual insanity wuz released that's when I started listening to him. man there wuz alot better things on the tele back then.
We all love Stuart and his funk, but the drummer is working 125% every single beat. Just killing it and setting up Stuart's pocket. Amazing band from one side of the stage to the other.
No question about it ..... Stuart Zender is a beast on the bass 5:15.. He is killing it.!!!..Jay is doing his thang with vocals (as always ) I love acid jazz !!!!!!!
you can see in this concert stu is what in a normal lineup band the guitar player is, stu makes the solos! he and jay are the stars! no doubt the rest of the band makes a great job, this is one of their sickest performances ever
Jay Kay has a great voice and is a damn good songwriter. Kind of a huge asshole too, unfortunately... but then, alot of brilliant people aren't the nicest. Can't let that take away from what he does well.
@jamiroquai01fan Jay Kay? a living genius? he screeches incoherent scat into a dictaphone and tells the real musicians to turn it into something awesome, then takes all the royalties!
You're pinning all your love for Jamiroquai onto Jay Kay, when really he's the only one who is truly replaceable, the rest of the band are the ones with the hardcore talent.
@mattmit I absolutely 100% completely disagree with you! In fact i couldn't possibly disagree more. Just look at zender, as soon as he left jamiroquai he went down a peg. Mark Ronson has never made a good song. I'm not saying the musicians aren't talented. They are all utterly fantastic and VERY skilled! However, without Jay Kay, jamiroquai wouldn't be jamiroquai. He is superb at what he does, he has a great voice and is a superb writer. He made jamiroquai!
@jamiroquai01fan Well I guess until we hear one of Jay Kays early Dictaphone scat renditions, we'll never know if he's an extremely gifted songwriter or a blagger. I'll be fair and not label him either way until I know for sure. I do know that on Return of the Space Cowboy the bass is prominent and defines many of the songs, but Stu is rarely credited.
@jamiroquai01fan What? Do actually think Jay Kay did all that writing himself? The basslines, the harmony, the counterpoint, the arrangements etc are what made jamiroquai's first 3 albums great. Jay wrote the songs (ie the lyrics and melody), but the rest of the band did all the extra stuff to make the tracks amazing. Do you actually think Jay wrote those basslines, chose all those great chords like on Virtual Insanity or wrote this arrangement of space cowboy? He did in his arse!
@eoinwalsh91 No! of course that's not what I'm saying lol. Producing a good song is a group effort. But I am simply saying that without Jay Kay, Jamiroquai as a band would not be the same. Surely that goes without saying really doesn't it? Jay Kay comes up with some superb lyrics and melodies as you said and then the band members add their bit to turn that into a complete sound. He also has a truly unique and great voice to boot. :)
@juanreloco The guitarist here is Simon Katz. He played on the "Return of the Space Cowboy", "Travelling without Moving" and "Synkronized" albums and was with the band from 1994 to 2000.
And yes, he was/is great. Overall, Jamiroquai had 3 live guitarists: Gavin Dodds (1993 - 1994, he played on "Emergency on Planet Earth") who sounded the funkiest, Simon Katz here who sounded the jazziest and Rob (the current one), the Rock guitarist :P.
@milickristijan Whats the name of that intro song, you say? Oh thats not an intro song. Thats just foreplay before the intercourse "Space Cowboy" is going to have with your ears.
No matter how many times you see, you miss "this" lineup. The crazy thing is that Zender can't read music. I couldn't believe it myself but he admits it in an interview he did in 2009 and says he focuses on his "inner groove" to play. Music reader or not, the boy is wicked ill on the bass!!!!
Instead, the backing vocals were spammed by DJ-Zire (Spam FTW xD), and there was a brass section. Most fans actually prefer this line-up with them included.
if you note, half way through, he asks his organiser to turn the vocals down slightly, its funny, you can see his hand movements. He's spot on even when he's not trying
I can only hope JK sees this clip, shed a tear and and thinks that the band sounded so fucking TIGHT and good with Stewart Zender on board. I had the pleasure of seeing them in 1994 in Brussels in a 1,500cap theather with a bowl-shaped wooden floor. The sound was so amazing and these same guys played there that night... Best concert of my life.
this is the most killin live performance of this song ive seen. the way the horns and synth weave their lines together during the horn interlude is really nice to listen to.
i wouldnt judge it by the sound of the album tho..when you hear the live versions wich is usually how the real song is supposed to sound then id judge..theres a lot of songs that i dont like in the album but then i hear them live and i freak the fuck out lol
me too, i like the disco stuff but i agree that they need to go back and do more soul and funk. If you look at the performances from the end of the sony contract onwards, for example the f1 malaysia gig in '09 and rock in rio '08, there are signs of going back to the old style and apparently, Jay has been quoted as saying there will be lots of horns and strings in the new songs which is a good sign :) i can't wait!!!
its amazing coz if u watch from 2.42 he's telling the soundman to put either his mic up or something else but it just looks like he's jamming thats a pro singer for you!! LOVE THEM FOREVER!!!!!!!!
@TheBrassHole sincerest apologies I was brash and in a mood. You are missing the point by dividing the music. They arent a jazz band or trying to play some bits of jazz and other bits of funk. Generic is completely right. Acid Jazz or Jazz Funk is a name for the genre/image in itself and does not identify with the specifics of what is being played part by part. The same goes for Zero 7.
hahahahahahahaha...dats a good one noel1971...lol..wat was atta67 even thinking at that point of time..stuart zender, marcus miller, stanley clarke or victor wooten??
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I played music and I know that someone with this kind of voice could not get to a proper school of music. You can like them, but it still is a fact:he is not a great singer, actually, not even a singer.
Space Cowboy just can't get any better than this, just can't. Too bad there's no DVD or full concert to download at least what i have been looking. Whole concert seems great.

@england1413 Jazz? - some chords... Funk? - sometimes... Generic at best, but I still like them... No need to spout insults.
