1.Before going to the races you have to sign a waiver, so you know it is dangerous so you wouldn't go if you did not love it. 2. Just because the plane crashed and hurt people does not mean things should change 1 out of how many laps of how many races??? pretty good safety record. In Car racing you have had crashes, i did not try to shut you down. if you are at the races you should know the dangers.
from videos that i have seen it looks like the plane lost part of its right elevator causing the plane to loose its ability to pull out of the dive, but the pilot did his best to avoid the crown, about 100-150 people owe their lives to this mans determination.
I was in the farthest row in the grandstand when this happened. its a safe 200 feet away, but the whole experience was absolutely terrifying.
I've seen videos and movies of deadly plane crashs before, but seeing one up close were you see people actually get vaporized /blasted/shredded to pieces before you...no one should ever be subjected to it.
I give my consoledences to all those who were affected by this, and can hope this may never happen again.

Ever go to the annual gravity-car race on the 4th of July down in Bisbee? I was directly across the narrow street, just past the finish line, in...1980? 1981? ...when that one driver lost control and went up over the curb and slammed into the spectators, killing a young mother and her little boy. Her husband and daughter were there next to them but survived. Pretty horrible. They abolished that race, but about 10 years later, to my surprise, they reinstated it.
@infinitywardfan yes, the plains trim tab, (controls the balance) has 2 pieces, and one of them shattered, and it threw the plane at an angle, and at the speed that we was going at was equivelent or more than 12G's. He was killed instantly and was dead before the plane even hit the ground. this is my best friend Ali's grandfather. Prayers with the leeward family.

Jimmy Leeward was a first class clown. He flew this piece of junk plane that was not even functioning correctly. Not only did his trim tab break off but his tail wheel did not retract. That combined with the fact that his seat broke shows that he was incompetent and should not have been flying. His age of 74 did not help the situation. 3 mechanical failures and a 74 year old decrepit pilot caused 9 people to die and many more to be injured.

The tail wheel will come down at around 9Gs, and there are pictures of the tail wheel retracted as the race started. I haven't seen any evidence of the seat breaking, but it wouldn't matter anyway. How many hours do you have with the air under your ass? I guarantee it wasn't as many as Leeward.

indeed... the tab tore off from an elevator on the horizontal stabilator... as it fell off, he could no longer physically control the large elevator due to excessive wind resistance to overcome... - the smaller tab assists the pilot to move the elevators easily... suddenly the plane climbs out of control at a high angle of attack, the engine stalls and the weight of the engine causes it to nose dive like a rock... he had little chance to do anything... a simple mechanical failure...

Jimmy Leeward was a first class clown. He flew this piece of junk plane that was not even functioning correctly. Not only did his trim tab break off but his tail wheel did not retract. That combined with the fact that his seat broke shows that he was incompetent and should not have been flying. His age of 74 did not help the situation. 3 mechanical failures and a 74 year old decrepit pilot caused 9 people to die and many more to be injured.
Leeward was a first class clown.

@hrvatskasad His age doesnt matter. This man, and airplane, were the finest of the finest...but accidents can happen even to the best. There was no chance for him to save his aircraft, the forces caused by the sudden loss of a trim tab could easily render a person unconscious. He was able to stick it out and save so many lives...and you know it.

@jimstand . When the trim tab fell off it pitched the nose of the plane up into a 10G climb. No human on earth no matter what age can take 10Gs without a G suit. The tail wheel will come down at around 9Gs, and there are pictures of the tail wheel retracted as the race started. I haven't seen any evidence of the seat breaking, but it wouldn't matter anyway. How many hours do you have with the air under your ass? I guarantee it wasn't as many as Leeward.

This shows that the plane was poorly modified. Leeward is responsible for the 9 deaths. I could care less that he killed himself. He was a fool. Now he is a dead fool. He was NO hero. He did not avoid the grandstand to crash in a less populated area. Heck he wasn't in the cockpit, he was slumped down and playing stupid.

With all the money he had, you think they would of installed an ejection seat. What I think happened is he lost is stabilizer, panicked, pulled up realized he would stall it, came back down to level off, but he had to much wind speed not enough altitude and could not level off, I think he just did not have the strength to pull the stick back enough. 74 yr old millionaire

indeed... the tab tore off from an elevator on the horizontal stabilator... as it fell off, he could no longer physically control the large elevator due to excessive wind resistance to overcome... - the smaller tab assists the pilot to move the elevators easily... suddenly the plane climbs out of control at a high angle of attack, the engine stalls and the weight of the engine causes it to nose dive like a rock... he had little chance to do anything... a simple mechanical failure...

@ all the people saying he was old/blacked out. Other videos show that the extreme g's broke off one of the elevators on the tail. It the went from horizontal to vertical in under 2 secs at 500 mph most likely causing the pilot to black out. The plane then looped around and went into a nose dive straight at the ground.

@troll2nite The FAA says commercial pilots are too old to fly at 65. Military pilots lose flight status at 60. There is obviously a reason behind that.
You are stupid enough to think it is safe for a 74 year old man to fly an aircraft in close quarters at 500 mph over a crowd of people. Something tells me you aren't in line for the Einstein award
