  • That same music from 0:31 played in Merchant Prince aswell.

  • Darklands is now available from GOG! for $5.99, works on Windows XP & Windows 7!

    gog.com/en/gamecard/darklands

  • So sad how original these old games were...so much character and difficulty....what happened to the people that made these games!

  • @permagrey Fuck knows but I wish they'd come back!

  • I played this game in DOSBOX but sometime he started asking me questions (what is this symbol about etc) when I left cities and I couldn't find any guide about how to answer correctly.. :( Do you know some answers or why is it happening?

  • @AramilWhisperwind Go to Abandonia(dot)com, search for the game, and download the note about the questions.

  • @AramilWhisperwind In built anti-piracy measure. Search for Darklands Alchemical Symbols :P

  • Can this game be played online? I`m looking for a fun RPG that you can play online

  • @TrunkMonkey3000 No. Asshole. It can't be played online. Go suck a penis with your WoW buddies.

  • @DrJackJeckyl LOL thankyou for your compliments

  • Holy hell! I played this for an unbelievable amount of hours back in the day. Sieged and slayed Raubritters left and right. Got the best armor (from Salzburg, I think) and the best weapons (can't remember where those were sold). Reached the pinnacle of achievement and reputation: "Legendary Hero," I think it was. However, I never beat it all due to bugginess! I may not have been able to beat it anyway, though, 'cause I eschewed magic in favor of cold, hard steel. Great post! DAT MUSIC!

  • How do you get uber-STR like that? 98 STR surpasses any Bapho anytime XD

  • You know, for nigh on a decade and a half I've been namedropping Darklands whenever someone asked me what my favourite RPGs were. No one ever knew what the hell I was talking about and I was starting to think it was a figment of my imagination until I found this video quite by accident.

  • This game is only good in people's fading, aging memories. There was so much punishment code included you had to think the designer hated his audience.

  • Matt Chat has a 3 part interview with Arnold Hendrick, designer of Darklands (and Pirates, Gunship and Silent Service!) Check it out here:

    watch?v=I30dzwiNxLk&feature=related

  • @TheChuckk You do know you can 'retire characters and get new one's, don't you? If not, I suggest replacementdocs for the great manual!

  • AMAZING game! have to agree that it was wayyy ahead of its time and a classic that needs to be aknowledged.

  • i remember reading the manual for this game, the developers stated that this was a different type of RPG, a more realistic one where the Character stats were "fixed" and didn't improve. I thought that was interesting, because you really had to rely on luck to defeat battles instead of waiting until you were strong enough...

    Very difficult game...

  • I was 10 years old when I got Darklands and I've been playing PC games until now but none beat DL. The character creation system is unique!

  • Loved this game. Its the best RPG that i have played. Its sandbox aspects are unbeatable even today

Managed to finish it (and the end is great too). However i think you need to look carefully to find it in the map...

  • KiaX - you need DOSBox - and to make it easier, get a GUI style front end for DOSBox called D.O.G. Just google both.

  • wait... im using windows vista... how can i install it because i found it in my basement and i want to try it... can you help?

  • Lolz really Brandon?

  • Use DOSBox

  • This game is a classic and someone need's to make a modern version. Better than the cartoonish WoW.

  • Some are trying to do a remake using the Oblivion engine.

  • @MaciejMK

Try Mount and Blade. Inspired from Darklands

  • This game is awesome. I wish I could find this one and Sword of Fargoal to download from somewhere...

  • Someone needs to do a "let's play Darklands!" video :}

  • I tried but it was too difficult to capture video and audio from dosbox plus commentary from mic. However once i get a new computer...

  • This game has a lot of personality. Looks fun.

The Fuggers! We're going to meet those Fuggers in Hamburg! Ha!

  • Best ever RPG!

  • I've heard people talk about this game for years and I had no idea that the entire game (outside of combat) consists of clicking through menus. That is so odd to me. Not in a bad way, but just, weird.

  • Shouldn't be too odd, if you ever played Pirates.......

  • One thing i did love about this game, is how many many options it gave for each step. Makes the game much more creative! Too slow for the technology back then, but new RPG's should give you this many optinons since techn. is super fast now. It would be really fun!

  • i tried to play this 8 yrs ago and got really pissed off with the alchemacy. I couldnt understand what i was to do in this game?

  • @CescoPisicoli Needed the manual

  • Thanks for sharing it!

  • is there a way to play this on psp? meaning is the dosbox way fast enough and is the cursor large enough to make it playable?

  • are there more advanced "random" rpg games like this one??

  • There is NOTHING like this game. Some games are just one-off classics. Darklands is one of them.

  • I loved this game, and still fire it up sometimes in DOSBox. What app did you use to record?

  • DOSBOX!!!

  • Whoa. Didi not even realize you could do that.

  • SO! You've found out our little secret... You won't live to tell it!

  • Chimes in, not one of the best, but the very best ever RPG game in the world...

and i totaly agree would be sweet to see this game have its graphics updated but the actual game left the same..

Im hunting like a lunatic to try and find this play on my pc ( but no where seems tosell it anymore....

  • One of my all time favorite RPGs.

I've been playing Mount&Blade lately (great game) and it's close but doesn't capture the epic scope of Darklands.

  • Is this a sandbox game, where u can explore the world at your own leisure?

  • Yes, Mount&Blade is a completely wide open sandbox game...almost to a fault.

  • Thanks for the reply, but I actually meant whether Darklands was a sandbox game, since I've never played it, but heard great stuff about it.

  • Probably the NUMBER ONE Sandbox game,.in that it creates quests procedurally, meaning on-the-fly, as you play. Also, despite these random quest creations, they are still logical. So if a Dragon is spawned and a quest is created for you to save a village from the Dragon, and you going and do the quest, you hopefully save the village. If you don't do the quest, and travel to that village, you may see it burnt to the ground by that Dragon!

  • Thanks for the reply, but I actually meant whether Darklands was a sandbox game, since I've never played it, but heard great stuff about it.

  • Yep, it's completely wide open.

  • They have the best medieval music. Where I can get those musics?

  • Tank you for the tube, gives me some souvenir of the old time whene I played until 1 am.

  • I play starcraft every night till 3am atleast ^^

  • Bow to Darklands! I have tried to complete this game for a few time and got overwhelmed with its massive world on each occasion. My all time favourite PC game alongside Deus Ex!

  • Defenetly the best ever RPG game, shame they dont do a more upto date graphics, but leave the game exactly how it was in every other way, would sink all the other high graphics crap plots shit gameplay rpgs that are out these days

  • Easily one of the greatest RPGs of all time. Thanks for posting this.

  • I said it 3 months ago - and I want to say it again - greatest RPG EVER!!!!!!

  • Damn straight ol' chum - fantastic game

  • @UKJohnUK How fucking badass would a remake be? Knowing my luck though, they'd try to make it multiplayer and completely fuck it up, which seems to be the trend these days... as if multiplayer came along in 2005 and it was the greatest thing mankind has ever known it seems to be the ONLY selling point of many modern games... I'm all like: "Pffft... newbies!"

  • @UKJohnUK you said that 3 years ago and its still the same :D

  • Man I love Darklands... 98 str? Jebus...

  • i tried playing this game and couldnt get anywhere with it. I kept getting stuck with the alchemy stuff.

  • this game owns

  • Great RPG ever.

  • Great game. Back in the days when games came with large manuals, with stories and background information. Darklands manual was well illustrated like the game. I really enjoyed selling loot and practising alcamy. Wouldn't a new DL be so cool.

  • @Hazchemdog1

Man that is it....haha a new Darklands...would be sick!

  • @Hazchemdog1 Fuck yeah! I kept my box of 3.5 floppies, map and manual. They're sick. Recently my missus used them to complete the game in DOSBOX... I was trying to explain to her how buggy and fucking annoying it was in it's original Microprose state. Luckily for her she didn't have to encounter any of the bullshit. Just an awesome game. I know you made your comment 3 years ago and you're probably dead, thumbs up anyways. Oh and sweeeet, if you're not dead :))

  • this is one of the greatest games of all time *hint for getting started* make custom chars then load the preset chars and take all your gear then go to the inn and reconfigure party with your custom chars make sure you have custome char in your party to recieve gear dont do this with HANS other chars have better gear

  • This game is awesome. Its quite funny how other games copied some of its features, yet most of them dont have half of the ones this game has.

If someone could do a game like this with modern graphics it would be the best RPG avaiable. This is what Oblivion should´ve had been.

  • I've played games since 1984 and this one is one of the best 10 games ever made! A real classic!

  • Here here - and me too, 1984!

  • Long live Darklands!

  • I'm playing this game, got it and the manual from 'the underdogs'. Amazing game!

He,he,he... Jenna Jameson - the prettiest Jenna I know of! I bet she has no problem convincing the guards to let her in at night! :)

But, unfortunately it seems U used a char editor... power 98, 35yrs... weird!

  • Yes, I edited the game save for the video. However it is possible to raise power to that level without save editing.

  • But how, I'd love to increase my base stats... I thought they were more or less fixed. How can it be improved without editing?

  • If you save one of those tree creatures from the Wild Hunt, it will give you a fruit that increases your strength.

If you save your game right after eating the fruit and load it again, your power has been increased AND you still have the fruit. Repeat this until you have maximum power.

  • i'm interested in this game. Is it very hard?? How long is the game?

  • It is quite hard to get in at the start (after all it is western RPG from the DOS-era). Overall difficulty is quite high, but in very good way. Game is challenging, not frustrating.

If you know what you are doing game might be completed in 10 hours. However, I played it trough with out any FAQ and guides and it took at least 150 fantastic hours.

  • I spent so long on this game. I could never defeat the dragon or finish the mines.

  • I was in the mines last night but I couldn't get past the kobolds

  • Same

  • One of the best RPGs of the 90's and indeed all time! So wide open in gameplay, that it can be played almost forever! Only game I know where if you get a quest and don't do it/complete it in time, the world changes. Don't kill the Dragon soon enough and that village you need to find in the same area may be burned down! Is that neat or not?! :)

  • For those of you looking for this game, you can download it from the-underdogs website. Any missing document scans can be found at the Darklands Domain website. YouTube won't let me post the addresses here.

  • Yeah. Remember to grap alchemy symbol list. It is used for copy protection. I have this game as a original cd and it came WITHOUT those magical symbol explanations...

"Damn what the hell is gold?"

  • The symbol list is in the manual, and I happen to know alchemy ;)

  • I own this game, you can find old gems on ebay. Some are really hard to get. I got this boxed with manual etc., dirt cheap.

  • One of the best cRPGs ever made, even if relatively unknown these days. David Gaider (Bioware) likes it but unfortunately that doesn't really show in the games they make.

  • I've heard alot about this game, and it certainly looks excellent. No idea where to get it, however. Plus it's DOS, which still baffles my arse off. :/

  • Well the fact that its DOS shouldnt stop you from playing it,google up a program called "DOSbox". once setup,it will be able to run alot of the old dos games.

  • Click "smaller video" -button for original resolution and sharper image.

Funny, it took something like 8 hours for youtube to process this video.
