Huh interesting, so when Richard Dawkins was describing in his book "River out of Eden" the genetic code as being Digital, is he incorrect?

Would the replication of DNA be a digital process, or was he wrong about that as well?

I've not read that particular Dawkins title, so I can't say for sure but I'm assuming, like his others, it's a very detailed metaphor. If it isn't, I'd disagree with him unless he specifies an atypical definition which I'm sure he'd allude to.

Geerup, on the other hand, often confuses fact and metaphor, even during our short dialogue.

If you could define "digital process" for me, I'd certainly give you my personal answer :)

Richard Dawkins kind of explained it like with Telephone lines; in an analog system all the static accumulates over a long enough line that if you go far enough all that you'd have was a hiss.

Unlike digital, where you can send it any distance and the quality will have almost no problems at the end.

I'd describe the "digital process" myself, based on what he said, as simply copy+pasting a Word Document; there are seemingly no problems no matter how often I make another generation, each ->(1)

Ah, then his bit on DNA sounds like a metaphor for the fidelity of replication and translation to me (which, to be fair, is awesome but not perfect).

As for the nervous system, the digital side of things could pertain to individual nerve cells firing or not, and the analogue could refer to scaling from "oo that tingles" to "ZOMFG THE PAIN"

Dawkins does love his metaphors, but with scientific education and awareness as it is these days, we need every skyhook we can get :)
