My God that Highway Action Trust are a bunch of ignorant wankers. Why should those bastards have any right to anything? And I never thought I'd ever be angry at Dr Cullen's actions. I'm actually glad he's no longer in the Labour Party now that I've seen that....
There's only one bus that comes to my area which is at the Eastern end of Auckland. This is a real pain as I need to attend university almost daily and it takes an two hours to get there and back each day! And it only comes every hour, so if I miss the bus I am basically screwed.
Wow.. Such Dumasses out there.. "Perth is developed along the coast". I was about to say that I dont understand what that guy is saying but it was said straight afterwards.
interesting to see the focus on rail of so many cities now. for a while i thought buses are slightly better than individual cars, but in auckland there's far too much reliance on this very flawed bus system. its expensive, it doesn't run on time. to get a bus from queen street to k road takes longer than just walking there. every bus (with the 1 exception of the northern flyer) uses the main roads and gets stuck badly in traffic just as cars do. we need better rail.
Why is so difficult to build a decent public transport system in this village? Combine those bureaucratic city councils into one and do something. Faster, faster...We've been waiting for 8 years by now. My wife dent a car today. I wish she took the bus. But Auckland's buses are crap (expensive, seldom and their routes are so complicated, that you'd need a PhD)...Trains are getting better but still too slow. More rails in different direction please. And give them some electricity at last...
I live in Vancouver & have lived in Sydney, Copenhagen & Amsterdam. Ive been to most modern cities for work. Im currently coming to the end of my contract in Van & looking at where 2 go next; the main reason I dont want to go back to Akl is public transport. Akl need fast rail on corridors & light rail in downtown areas. Increasing oil prices, drunk drivers, $40 taxis to go out, crazy! Preserve our environment, impress tourists, bring ex-pats home, Have a beer & ride train home; C'mon Auckland!
Great Vid....Funny enough- the one fact you present that suggests Auckland isn't as sprawling as we might think comes from the biggest anti-rail group out there. Demographia (which is where the density survey is from) is run by road and oil lobbyists with an agenda to spread bad information to dissuade us from persuing sustainable land use agendas such as rail or smart growth or density.
That same Demographia shows Auckland as slightly less dense than New York City, which has over a hundred miles of subway track and electrified commuter rail in addition thereto.
fuck them man` they fuck up everything here` just like our underground train station` we're the only country in the world that runs underground DIESEL! trains lol` fucken hell sort it out will ya!
i lie in Edinburgh (scotland) which has a very extensive and cheap bus network however the road services were not expanded for them however it has to have a good bus system since it has no room for rail it has 2 rails with one being extended beyond the city and a crappy light rail (tram) line being built
I'm from NZ but live in Japan. The Tokyo rail system, though not mentioned, is exactly what they are talking about. Millions of people commute from Yokohama to Tokyo to work and then back, with no problems and its cheap. That's a 40 mintue trip at 100 km/h. Keep in mind the greater Tokyo area is bigger than the whole Waikato.
As a Kiwi I think Auckland is an embrassment. Luckly I'm from Wellington, whivh is a bit better, but still not 1st world standard.
Is the highway construction lobbies strong in New Zealand? is that why SHs get disproportionately higher funding from the government than public transport plans?
its more than that, they are strong in NZ, but the other thing to consider is the way of life in NZ and how Auckland grew in the first place. In the past aucklands outer suburbs were actually rural, a car was a must to get to anywhere urban, and now its totally a necessity, you cant get anywhere without one, Public transport never grew because auckland was not meant to grow so big. and we are now screwed, someone has to do something already!!
i like buses however buses never need to use motorways ever! i don't think it should all be provided by rail but i think a nice good mix of public transport is required buses are cheaper to run and can have a higher stop frequency but buses should not be soely dedicated to feeding the rail syatem
buses in auckland are bloody expensive these days not to mention they arrive once every couple of hours!! The hell with the c*nts who are building more roads and who say busses are the answer.
Good stuff-good intentions.I´ll stay tuned.Living in Switzerland but having lived in AKL as well I believe that NZ could participate in the Swiss knowledge about publ.transportation...Would b gr8 to get in touch with some responsables...
The pro-motorway people's logic is just retarded!! Anyone who has lived in Auckland, or even visited it, can tell you the best solution is a rail transport system (or even a monorail system around central auckland). Aside from cutting down on traffic, pollution and congestion, they'll finally start getting rid of more and more of those scummy boy racers that are a waste of space!
Wicked video, spread the word. We need to push these sorts of facts and figures out there so Joe public understands the real reasons why rail isn't being considered.

Demographia reports the density numbers, but they come from the United Nations.
