  • is it me or does this sound like red house before it was even red house..?

  • Also called: California Night.

  • That was awesome!

  • he played with joey dee and the starlighters also in jersey and pa.

  • - I think you are right -sounds like a later recording ....I thinks it is a great a t recording never the less give it REDDOG 2-THUMBS UP

  • Nice indeed....reminds of, if memory serves me correctly, some early records in hackensack, nyc??

  • Great listening to Jimi's early recordings. Tight playing, tremendous energy. Thanks for posting!

  • interesting

  • I can tell its jimi and im half deff!!!!there'sno mistaking that voice!!

  • BIG THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • somewhere, an unedited version of these show's exist.. you can tell it's edited because the second solo is exactly the same as the first. A great version of the song that eventually became Red House

  • what a genius!

  • Oh man that reverb....just like the Texas guys, Freddy & T-Bone! LUV IT!

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!!!

  • Our National Treasure.

  • Actually, when it came to blues he never used many effects at all. Fuzz and wah. And compared to players today, Jimi could used every effect he had and it was next to nothing compared to today.

  • Now you can hear how good he was playing with no effects.

  • 65? latter imo..

  • One of hundreds of practice runs. Red House was ready 4 take off.

  • That is SUPREME playing. Just absolutely SUPREME blues. It just doesn't get any better than that. You can hear just how much SRV's playing was influenced by Hendrix in this song.

  • @GTX1123 Yup. More than that though, I think it shows that SRV and Jimi had many of the same influences...

  • wow!

  • I get tired of you weirdos comparing a human being to the Almighty. Jimi was great at what he did, but to blaspheme because of his skills is absurd.

  • But I have my doubts about this beginnig 1965. When Chas found Jimi, he was very shy about singing and took a lot of coaching. This is a very confident Jimi. Other recordings of the era don't have this kind of tone. This sounds like a jam from 1968. Just my opinion.

  • @michaeljamsmith I agree.. and I listen to a lot of Hendrix

  • @michaeljamsmith Don't believe what they write in books - listen to: "what'd I say" Vinyl MFP5278 with similar random 1965 blues recordings of JH - It shows he could sing well in 1965. Jimi perfected it with Red House. The rest is history.

  • @rolg3 Not history books, understanding how Jimi inside and out for 40 years of playing guitar. Look for the Axis Experince on YouTube, you will see what I mean.

  • @michaeljamsmith Yeah, he hated his singing, but he did sing occasionally before Chas found him. There's another clip, maybe from the same night, where Jimi sings "I'm A Man". Belts out the lyrics and cranks his amp. Don't forget that he sang in the band he was fronting when Chas found him, "The Blue Flames."

  • @michaeljamsmith This is a shot in this montage that shows Jimi singing too...

  • Damn, Jimi played a lot of real cheap guitars before he made it

  • Unreal find! Super post!

  • That is some sick blues .. just discovered this gem, gonna take some time and see if I can learn me some of those licks! Jimi continues to amaze ..

  • Wow! It's all there. I hear a bit of Albert King lurking in his sound...as I do when I hear SRV.

  • such a rare video . It's Jimi for sure. Vocals and guitar of course.

  • You people arguing over whether or not this is a young Hendrix are just frigging nuts.

  • Can you imaGINE JH surviving and living on. I can visualize attending small club venues groovin on a 70 year old strat gods' work. If Hendrix was not spoon fed drugs he could experience producing music with SRV and or JW (Check out JW highway 61 revisited live 76..Insane riffs and great timing just like we just heard. . ui

  • The name of the song is California Bound. It is Jimi's band "Curtis Knight & The Squires."

  • The Blue Flame was a very appropriate title for Jimi's band. Just lisen to those lighting fast turnarounds he plays, man. Many do it fast, but never with this much soul. The man had great phrasing, what more can I say?

  • Yes! This is Jimi , no mistake. Thank you so much for posting this incredible jem.

  • god i love every single last version of Red House that has ever been recorded

  • @Dinscripter Look closely

  • oh man this is a treat. thanks crema for posting

  • RED HOUSE FOR SURE noly different lyrics :P this man is godd

  • jimi n curtis sharing vocals, seems to me, 1st verse is Jimi, 2nd is Curtis n lastly Jimi again - wonderful stuff from '65!

  • delta blues

  • this is not jimi on vocals it is curtis knight..listen closely.

  • Everybody dismisses the pre experience material...this is totally awesome

  • Albert King also released an album by the same name. It contained a lot of his early music, and I had the chance to discuss it with him before one of his performances in Peoria, IL. Hard to tell how long it's been around.

  • This song is called California Night aka Mr. Pitiful. It's based on Memphis Slim's "Everyday I have the Blues" but Jimi added extra lyrics. It was recorded Dec. 26, 1965 with Curtis Knight & the Squires at George's Club in Hackensack New Jersey.

  • What's the name of this song and who wrote it please ????

  • Jimi did NOT play like this in 1965. Listen to all the other Curtis Knight audio, this doesn't fit at all. Knight never allowed Jimi to go off like this and control the stage. In 1965 Jimi did not have these riffs, and his voice had not broke out yet. This is a mislabled video. If you want to argue about it, point me to another 1965 audio where Jimi is performing similarly, or any Curtis Knight audio that he allows Jimi to play like this. Thank you.

  • @loloschool

    Hendrix sings lead on this

On the killing floor - Jimi Hendrix - 1965.mpg

  • Jimi was also one hell of a vocalist

  • Wow,are you sure this was 1965? it hit's me as slightly later Jimi.....ah hell, why not '65...you have to remember he busted out with Are you Experienced in 1966,and he didn't suddenly get that good all in one year, so sure...1965! Why of course he was playin the shit out of the blues only the year before man...it's when Chas Chandler said "write some songs" all these ideas Jimi probably had in his head already,he just organized and developed into songs for his first LP!

  • @Eddieguitarloebs Jimmy wasn't playing a Strat with Curtis either...this ain't no Duosonic!

  • @webcityguy Right!

  • One of my most fav blues tunes

  • Ha,, now i know why ,,the old fuddy duddy never has beans,,didn't want him to join in,,,,but who can stop genius !!!

  • this was released in England in 1972 on the music for pleasure label! It is jimi on vocals and was recorded at georges club 20 Hackensack new jersey in december 1965

  • The greatest blues guitarist the world has ever known.

  • And he did it left handed !!

  • Sounds very Red House-ish.. love it!

  • I love Jimi's blues. I love Stevie Ray, Albert King, BB and Freddie but Jimi is THE GODFATHER OF BLUES.

  • a year and a half before Monterey festival

  • Is this on a commercial CD?

  • This is way later. Is this Band of Gypsies? It's definitely not Noel/Mitch 4 sure.

  • @loloschool lol its not band of gypsies

  • To me, this sounds like a recording made at a later date. I love the old photos but this sounds like a more advanced Hendrix playing. He even uses feedback on some notes. In addition, I never knew that Jimi did any singing that early in his career. He was very shy about his singing. Anyway, whatever it is, it sounds great.

  • @spyguys Check out get out of my life woman, that's another early one with Hendrix singing, great song too. I think he occassionally sang in Curtis Knight's band;out of all of the previous bands he was in I think Curtis Knight gave Jimi the most artistic freedom.

  • @moopadoopolus Thanks man. I had not heard that one before. There is something about these Curtis Knight recordings with Jimi that sounds more modern to me. Perhaps it's the echo used on his voice and that his playing sounds way more advanced on this than on other old recordings I've heard. Again he uses feedback here. Do you know the date of this recording?

  • @spyguys I would guess by the recording quality, this is from Hackensack, NJ, Dec 26 1965...

  • Incredible pictures ! ........ i haven't seen hardly any of these before ......... oh, and that guitar/singer ...... great share, thanks !!

  • That's fricken great. Thanks!

  • "there's a red house over yonder, lawd that's where my baby stays"

can be inserted perfectly and it kinda shows the beginnings of "red house"

  • Albert King influenced

  • holy shit jimmy looks clean haha

  • 2:40-2:45---- eargasm

  • California Night blues from the Birth of Success album.Driving South from the same album is a killer

  • A later recording with Jimi singing.

  • This is a later recording with Jimi on vocals.

  • @ScottEmmonsMusic Later recording? How "later"?

  • Yes a later recording

  • A Dan Electro, a Supro, a Bronco or musicmaster, an Epiphone Wilshire or Coronet cool to see what he used to play. This is a later recording with Jimi singing.

  • A Dan Electro, an Epiphone Coronet or Wilshire, a Fender Bronco, Mustang or Musicmaster so cool to see what he used to use!

  • I hear abit of Buddy Guy and Otis Rush in his playing.I think he is playing with his teeth on this song.I read in a book that he got to sing and play on a few with his teeth in 1965 and 1966.

  • lol @ the lil' richard look

  • Jimi is God

  • @LiquidGardener God is God

  • @emmadazz therefore jimi is god

  • @LiquidGardener jimi killed god at the marquis in london

  • Got a bit of the elmore james vocals comin through... and a touch of little richard.. not quite found his voice yet! Excellent post!

  • song has some Red House flare

  • Is that Jimi on vocals?

  • @RhyminRome

    Jimi on vocals

  • @crema58

no it is not listen closely there are many times that the pitch hits points that jimi never hit with his voice if you listen to alot of jim you will understand

  • @Omariusorous this is definitely jimi hendrix on vocals and yes i have listened too and been a collector of the mans music for years...

  • @Omariusorous Get a grip!! Any fan, especially someone with a musicl ear, can tell that this is Hendrix singing. There is a certain timbre in the voice which is unmistakable. This recording was probably not done in the days reflected on this video when he was a backing singer but possibly anachronistically played over older footage. This playing and singing sounds more like when Jimi was front-man, as in the "Red House" days.

  • @aristotle358 no way brah :D..you speak as if no one sounds just like hendrix..check out Velvert Turner band..jimi taught him a bit and used to chill with him..now tell me thats not hendrix timbre there obv we can tell the diff but u know what i mean? idk after all the bootlegs and all that ive heard..its like there is a switch in my head that is like yes hendrix or no hendrix and this voice even though it sounds 95% like hendrix some notes that are being hit are not notes he ever hit himm :D

  • @aristotle358 Sure sounds like Jimi. Did you notice that the 1st pic he's playing a Dan Electro, then it turns into a strat. But who cares it's Jimi

  • @Omariusorous well this is really early jimi so MAYBE he had a better singing voice before he started to tour a lot. idk just a thought of mine :)

  • @RhyminRome

    Jimi on vocals

  • @RhyminRome jimi not on vocals

  • this shit needs over 10 million views.

listen to him play as a non-frontman, he still completely owns the song!

  • Cool pictures of a young Jimi.

His chops and vocals were so advanced for his age.

    Soulful genius.

    Thanks for this post.

  • Correction: This has been released...many times recorded at club 'Georges' New Jersey 26/12/65
