I never bothered with DiscMans though, I went from Cassette Walkman's straight to MiniDisc, before switching to MP3. It's a shame MiniDisc didn't take off though :(

Yeah, I encode my MP3's at the highest quality on my computer (320 CBR), as harddrives are dirt cheap, but bring the quality down when transferring to my MP3 players (192). Personally, I can't really hear the difference between 192 vs 320. Even 128 is bearable sometimes.

Oh my old MP3 player didn't hold all that, I WISH! It was only 40GB. It is an Ancient MP3 player "Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra" Got it when the first released, and at the time, was the best on the market IMO Still works after 13 years or so, but it's a little buggy, and pretty big by today's standards. I had to special order it from the US, as they only had the 20gig here.

I spent all day yesterday going through my music and only got 30 gigs (over 400 albums) worth finished. Which may sound like a fair amount, but I have 600 gigs of music left to go throught LOL I don't think I'll ever get the job done :( Man I miss my old MP3 player, it let me go through folders, much easier. Does Archos 5 rely on proper MP3 Tags, or can you search for you music by going to actual folders?
So, does it have folder structure like a computer, or is it more like an iPod, where you can't find some songs because your MP3 Tags are incorrect?
I don't even put Music on my iPhone 4 because some of my albums get all screwed up, and it's just a pain for me. I much prefer choosing music through folders.

@brentboys101 Ok firstly don't get the Archos 5, get the Archos 4.3. It is thiner better OS better CPU better screen better everything! It uses Android witch is 10x better that that shitty version of Linux they used on the ARchos 5.
Also it is really easy to put music on anything made by Archos, just drag and drop. No need for format changes or anything.
I would go on but youtube only lets me have a few 100 letters and at - this moment I have 68 more letters till YouTube gose FAIL
The problem I have found with the Archos 5 is that because it's massive hardrive, if dropped/shaken around too much when powered on, it will in fact fail. I have had to send back 2 of them now to CS. I love everything about it, but the hard drive is just TOO big for an "on the go" device.
personally id rather have a device that does it all(pda, music, internet, games, usb key) instead of several similar device that almost suck at other features on purpose
Ipod Touch ought to be a great PDA out of the box but isnt. You should be able to also transfer files, music, video photos TO a computer but you cant. wtf. Functions that should be available require that you jailbreak it
...and an actual d-key on one side would be good for games(touch screen dpad are horrible)

I have both devices. I love them both but for very different purposes. iPod touch I use daily for watching bbc iplayer content...facebook...youtube etc. The archos can do the same but its user interface is so damn tedious. Apple interface rocks!!! Archos IMO is only good for watching movies because of the superb screen. Which is best? If you're doing everything plus you dont mind watching movies on a slightly smaller screen...go for the ipod touch.
I bought one on Ebay for 250$ (few minutes ago) shipping included and 250gb of memory and I already have and ipod touch and it sucks... XD the only thing is better with the ipod is the apps, but when you have it for a while it become borring... really boring... oh you can jailbreak it but it still suck... go with the archos it's much better.

It's true that archos asked money for extra video codecs in the past, but they no longer do this for the archos 5, so you can actualy play any video file you want : ).

wifi is wireless internet around ur area... u can search with a laptop or ipodtouch if it is available. And you can get it buy buying it, Off of other houses who have one set upetc. wifi is only available if somebody has theres set up. you can buy noe yourself and set it up through ur pc...and yes it cost money if you buy it! comment if u still need answers
I just read lots of reviews at amazon saying it has problem after couple of months, also I read that you cannot connect every where there is wifi for example not at McD, Starbuck or Barns and Noble. Is this true?
I've been told the ipod is better because of the apps... however I really have only used it for music, video, and to show off photos from trips and such. The tiny screen and lack of versitility has made it horrible, hoever the thin build is nice. I did however hack the hell out of it!!!
@OutreAnima only at first, the ipod touch has 190,00 apps. But, when you think about alot of the apps do exactly the same thing. The ipod touch actualy only has about 5,000 DIFFRENT apps. Get archos

The Archos 5 is prettier and I love the huge screen and memory. The only thing that is hurting it is it's battery life =/
I think both are great players. Though I would decide on the Touch, since it does that same thing as the Archos 5, but its more portable and can fit in my pocket. The Archos is just as portable as a Laptop/Netbook really.
If I was going on a long plane ride, I would definately take the Archos 5. But, everywhere else, the Ipod.

I have an iPod touch and I'm sticking with it. I don't need 250 gigs. My computer is only 60 and I only use half for my stuff. I've always used apple for mp3 players, and it's staying like that.
somebody that can store everything from they're computer ex emails videos music photos games and because of the compatibility of the many types of format you can put all of it on there.
With HD content, that 250 GB can quickly fill up. I still might consider purchasing an iPod Touch, down the road, if it gains the iPhone's megapixel camera.

You can use it as a hard drive. So if your computer is running out of space, you can hook it up and store files on it. I need 250 gb lol. I can probably fill an ipod touch with my music alone.
its from best buy and the best thing is is they give you money when it breaks so when u get bored with it maybe 2 years later, you can just turn it in and get another player. i got it for my zune 80gb and just turned it in for 250 store credit, which i used to buy my archos that im using right now

the itouch is also mush smaller and has the app store for apps. there's the youtube app, so you dont really need that much memory to store everything. and if they made an itouch that big it could easily have 250gb of storage

i sold my ipod touch and bought archos 5. I regret it now. Ipod touch is way better. Only problem is 3.5" screen is too small. When apple comes out with bigger screen ipods, I will be back!

The Archos 5 and the iPod touch both have great factors. In terms of space, the Archos wins; but who *actually* uses 250 gb of space. I barely use 8 gb. Also, for price, the iPod touch is a bit cheaper now. Although the Archos has many cool features and stuff, I have to say the iPod touch matches up pretty close because it is backed up by iTunes which i think is better than anything that Archos has come up with. Lastly, the iTouch does have a bit smoother UI than the Archos (in my opinion).
The only problem with this is that iTunes uses more resources than almost any other media player out there. Don't get me wrong, it's quite easy to use and is very aesthetic, but you do pay a price for it. Also, one of the key benefits of the Archos is that you can use the drag and drop method to add content, which is usually faster than going through a media player. Also, the iTouch came out a year before the Archos 5, so it's to be expected that the firmware is more refined.
lol i need the 250gigs my 160 gig ipod wasnt even enough to hold all my music and videos.i had about 10,000 songs and 200 videos on it but its still not enough. i still have another 100 videos i need space for. oh and considering that you have to convert all your videos to ipod format pisses me off. archos 5 can play dvd format videos with the (mpeg4 780i add on) i also like the fact you can transfer your data from your computer to an archos via wi-fi.
OK the archos does have a little more hard drive than the average person would need, but i would rather have too much space than not enough, but face it as Sup3rkirby explained the archos is better than the ipod. i mean everyone knows that the ipod has a few things that are different like the gravity sensor, and the games... but that doesn't make it better. Archos is just way better for what you pay. it has more features, bigger screen, and more components to add. i think Archos is just better.

They both do media, ok(but if you care about media you'll know it comes in a variety of formats, which makes support for them important unless you want to spend time converting...). They both do internet, but as far as handheld browsers go, the Archos 5 wins. Opera is better than Safari in this case(torrents, widgets, chat, etc.) And the resolution, the iPod can't compete and you would be a fool to say otherwise. Plus the accessories and potential really boost the Archos.

i have the Archos 5 and is the coolest thing, you can do almost everything you want with it.
the youtube videos can be seen really easy,
and actually you can program which folders you want to SYNC with WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER,
you can buy a separeted accesory of 30 bucks, and have internet 3G like the iphone, even you can buy a separate cam that can record take photos and storage them in the hard drive.
you have the opption of using it as a hard drive or a media divice.
the iPod has a brand name but archos has technology. and what is it with iTunes,does anyone no anyother music/video download site.

Apple has always and always will pwn Archos. Just because Archos has a bigger memory doesn't mean anything most people don't even have that much music and videos. Archos doens't have itunes or anything like it which just makes it go down way lower on the chart. Also ipod touch 2nd gen has a much more crispier design and inteface with beautiful pictures. For supported fomat nobody really cares if it can support exe.or not all you really need is .mp3 .avi and .mp4 u don't need all the other crap.

the Archos 5 does have more space but who needs it like come on 250 gigs who would want to have 250 gigs of space thats more than my freakin computer. PLus when you look at slimness the ipod touch 2nd gen feels good in your hands and can fit pretty much anywhere the Archos is just way too big to fit in a pocket. I listen to music a lot and itunes is a great way to organize it where as in an Archos you just copy them on not too much magic. Cover flow isn't a supported feature by Archos either.
while i can see where you are coming from. let me tell you the deciding factor between archos and apple. it was itunes. i had to load everything into itunes. my sister had some videos of her baby girl. she couldnt sync her vids with my ipod because she would erase everything else i had on my ipod. so she dumped the files into my ipod. i couldnt watch these vids until i got home from my four hour flight after taking 30 minutes to sync it up with my itunes. not a very pleasant way to manage items.
Although Archos has greater screen and superior codec support, it's weak battery life (2nd gen iPod Touch clocks at 38hr/6hrs now), sluggish and unresponsive interface, bulk size, and lack of iTunes support drops it down.
Drag and drop is a primitive process where iTunes is a deep deep organization master allowing to edit tags easily with podcast support. And Archos lacks the app support that drives the Apple Touch devices (3000+ apps and counting).
people watching this: just so you know these devices are now outdated by like 3+ years, and the comparison is very very basic.

Archos seems like the new MP3 player for me so far, and I love the HUGE Storage capacity for it's price! 250GB awesome. 500GB would be nice though :)

I have both devices. I love them both but for very different purposes. iPod touch I use daily for watching bbc iplayer content...facebook...youtube etc. The archos can do the same but its user interface is so damn tedious. Apple interface rocks!!! Archos IMO is only good for watching movies because of the superb screen. Which is best? If you're doing everything plus you dont mind watching movies on a slightly smaller screen...go for the ipod touch.

I bought one on Ebay for 250$ (few minutes ago) shipping included and 250gb of memory and I already have and ipod touch and it sucks... XD the only thing is better with the ipod is the apps, but when you have it for a while it become borring... really boring... oh you can jailbreak it but it still suck... go with the archos it's much better.

i bought an archos 5 60G cuz it as cheaper than itouch. but the bad thing about archos company is that when i tried to put videos in it, you have to purchase some software for it to play it, which cost money... So i will tell u itouch, especially if ur a teen who wants apps TONS of them!

It's true that archos asked money for extra video codecs in the past, but they no longer do this for the archos 5, so you can actualy play any video file you want : ).

wifi is wireless internet around ur area... u can search with a laptop or ipodtouch if it is available. And you can get it buy buying it, Off of other houses who have one set upetc. wifi is only available if somebody has theres set up. you can buy noe yourself and set it up through ur pc...and yes it cost money if you buy it! comment if u still need answers

I've been told the ipod is better because of the apps... however I really have only used it for music, video, and to show off photos from trips and such. The tiny screen and lack of versitility has made it horrible, hoever the thin build is nice. I did however hack the hell out of it!!!

@OutreAnima only at first, the ipod touch has 190,00 apps. But, when you think about alot of the apps do exactly the same thing. The ipod touch actualy only has about 5,000 DIFFRENT apps. Get archos

The Archos 5 is prettier and I love the huge screen and memory. The only thing that is hurting it is it's battery life =/
I think both are great players. Though I would decide on the Touch, since it does that same thing as the Archos 5, but its more portable and can fit in my pocket. The Archos is just as portable as a Laptop/Netbook really.
If I was going on a long plane ride, I would definately take the Archos 5. But, everywhere else, the Ipod.

The Archos 5 is hands down better than iTouch/iPhone. Will it kill Apple...no..Apple has too much power in media and marketing but Archos has the better product. Better to be unique than follow the masses. Confused on iTouch and Zune HD???? Get Archos it is both at a better price.

You can use it as a hard drive. So if your computer is running out of space, you can hook it up and store files on it. I need 250 gb lol. I can probably fill an ipod touch with my music alone.

its from best buy and the best thing is is they give you money when it breaks so when u get bored with it maybe 2 years later, you can just turn it in and get another player. i got it for my zune 80gb and just turned it in for 250 store credit, which i used to buy my archos that im using right now

the itouch is also mush smaller and has the app store for apps. there's the youtube app, so you dont really need that much memory to store everything. and if they made an itouch that big it could easily have 250gb of storage

i sold my ipod touch and bought archos 5. I regret it now. Ipod touch is way better. Only problem is 3.5" screen is too small. When apple comes out with bigger screen ipods, I will be back!

The Archos 5 and the iPod touch both have great factors. In terms of space, the Archos wins; but who *actually* uses 250 gb of space. I barely use 8 gb. Also, for price, the iPod touch is a bit cheaper now. Although the Archos has many cool features and stuff, I have to say the iPod touch matches up pretty close because it is backed up by iTunes which i think is better than anything that Archos has come up with. Lastly, the iTouch does have a bit smoother UI than the Archos (in my opinion).

The only problem with this is that iTunes uses more resources than almost any other media player out there. Don't get me wrong, it's quite easy to use and is very aesthetic, but you do pay a price for it. Also, one of the key benefits of the Archos is that you can use the drag and drop method to add content, which is usually faster than going through a media player. Also, the iTouch came out a year before the Archos 5, so it's to be expected that the firmware is more refined.

lol i need the 250gigs my 160 gig ipod wasnt even enough to hold all my music and videos.i had about 10,000 songs and 200 videos on it but its still not enough. i still have another 100 videos i need space for. oh and considering that you have to convert all your videos to ipod format pisses me off. archos 5 can play dvd format videos with the (mpeg4 780i add on) i also like the fact you can transfer your data from your computer to an archos via wi-fi.

OK the archos does have a little more hard drive than the average person would need, but i would rather have too much space than not enough, but face it as Sup3rkirby explained the archos is better than the ipod. i mean everyone knows that the ipod has a few things that are different like the gravity sensor, and the games... but that doesn't make it better. Archos is just way better for what you pay. it has more features, bigger screen, and more components to add. i think Archos is just better.

They both do media, ok(but if you care about media you'll know it comes in a variety of formats, which makes support for them important unless you want to spend time converting...). They both do internet, but as far as handheld browsers go, the Archos 5 wins. Opera is better than Safari in this case(torrents, widgets, chat, etc.) And the resolution, the iPod can't compete and you would be a fool to say otherwise. Plus the accessories and potential really boost the Archos.

i have the Archos 5 and is the coolest thing, you can do almost everything you want with it.
the youtube videos can be seen really easy,
and actually you can program which folders you want to SYNC with WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER,
you can buy a separeted accesory of 30 bucks, and have internet 3G like the iphone, even you can buy a separate cam that can record take photos and storage them in the hard drive.
you have the opption of using it as a hard drive or a media divice.
I totaly recomend it!

the iPod has a brand name but archos has technology. and what is it with iTunes,does anyone no anyother music/video download site.

plus the archos is the only "HD 720p" handheld device out thier. plus its 3.5G not "3G but its actually 2.85G". and the archos is far more responsive than the iPod.

Apple has always and always will pwn Archos. Just because Archos has a bigger memory doesn't mean anything most people don't even have that much music and videos. Archos doens't have itunes or anything like it which just makes it go down way lower on the chart. Also ipod touch 2nd gen has a much more crispier design and inteface with beautiful pictures. For supported fomat nobody really cares if it can support exe.or not all you really need is .mp3 .avi and .mp4 u don't need all the other crap.

the Archos 5 does have more space but who needs it like come on 250 gigs who would want to have 250 gigs of space thats more than my freakin computer. PLus when you look at slimness the ipod touch 2nd gen feels good in your hands and can fit pretty much anywhere the Archos is just way too big to fit in a pocket. I listen to music a lot and itunes is a great way to organize it where as in an Archos you just copy them on not too much magic. Cover flow isn't a supported feature by Archos either.

while i can see where you are coming from. let me tell you the deciding factor between archos and apple. it was itunes. i had to load everything into itunes. my sister had some videos of her baby girl. she couldnt sync her vids with my ipod because she would erase everything else i had on my ipod. so she dumped the files into my ipod. i couldnt watch these vids until i got home from my four hour flight after taking 30 minutes to sync it up with my itunes. not a very pleasant way to manage items.

Although Archos has greater screen and superior codec support, it's weak battery life (2nd gen iPod Touch clocks at 38hr/6hrs now), sluggish and unresponsive interface, bulk size, and lack of iTunes support drops it down.
Drag and drop is a primitive process where iTunes is a deep deep organization master allowing to edit tags easily with podcast support. And Archos lacks the app support that drives the Apple Touch devices (3000+ apps and counting).
This is just merely touching the subject.
