Hi Alan - We put a piece of wet newspaper cut to fit on the clubface. We received this advice from Gene Parente at Golf Laboratories in San Diego, CA. Gene manufactures and sells the robot that we use for testing as well as the USGA. It is our understanding that this is how the USGA conducted their testing in the development of this new rule.
Would love to see a similar test done with various 6 irons (or other mid iron): U Grooves vs. Modified U-Grooves vs. Box Grooves.
I've been looking at both the Mizuno MX-300 and Cleveland CG7 Black Pearl Tour irons...I just don't play enough for my old MP-33s.
