I'm another Aussie who fondly remembers Prince Planet. Children's programming was certainly simpler, more fantastic, less reality. My sort of television.
Oh the things he'll do something's on his shoe Prince Planet, he's the best with a meteor with a dinosaur there's a damsel in distress Right before your eyes out of disguise comes the hero of the day Out in outer space something take his place Prince Planet's on his way. Here comes Prince Planet! Priiiiiince Planet!
Interesting how many Aussies remember this - I too had tears in my eyes when I saw this.Guess it must have been really popular on our great little island.
I cant believe it! I made a medallion out of a jar lid too, and colored it! WOW! Im 46 now, but I remember that like yesterday...I had to be about 8, 9 and 10 back then.
Awesome - thanks for posting - ah yes it used to freak us out when his power got low, to this day his medallion powering up is still such a strong memory! used to watch it in Australia every afternoon. Kids today are overloaded with info. Memories like this are just gold.
Wow, that was fantastic and like the rest of us late 40 year olds here, what a trip down memory lane. I could remember all of the parts of the opening.
Thanks so much for posting this. Great memories of my child hood in Australia..
The "PRINCE PLANET" theme {the theme for the original Japanese version, "YUSEI SHONEN PAPI", couldn't be used} was written by Guy Hemric & Jerry Styner, who also wrote songs for American-International's "Beach Party" movies...and they figured, if a children's chorus worked so well for "ASTRO BOY"'s theme, why not theirs?
i seen this as a kid during lunchtime in gradeschool all the kids would go nuts!!! yeah it was all on shown on the old movie projector b/w good oh times
i seen this as a kid during lunchtime in gradeschool all the kids would go nuts!!! yeah it was all on shown on the old movie projector b/w good oh times
Where has my life gone, seems like yesterday I made a medallion out of a jar lid and
colored it in with a marker running up and down the street screaming PEEEEEEEE
KAPOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW. I used to freak out when the level of the P reached critical low and worried he might get killed, only to be overjoyed when the P got recharged, that was my favourite part :) Thanks for the memories sharkskinboy.
@opticwhitepx Yeah I feel sorry for kids these days, they don't know what they're missing. When I watch this video it almost brings tears to my eyes. I doubt kids today will feel like that about cartoons when they're in their 40s.
I never get tired of hearing this song, it's the best song ever written to this day. And I've seen some colour pics of Prince Planet but it's not the same. I don't want to know what colours he is, the REAL Prince Planet is black and white forvever!!
I use to watch this on channel 44 in Chicago, I was in High School by then, but all of the other after school re-runs had been on since I was a child. What was the Japanese title of the show, and why did they always have that silent pause in the begining
Fantastic! Remember loving this show, gigantor, Thor(I think - with the Rhino,dragon,- Herculiods ?) ,Kimba, & few others after primary school in the 70's what great shows to grow your imagination.. thanks !
I have searched for years for this - everyone I know remembers Kimba, Marine Boy, Gigantor etc but no one could recall Prince Planet. If anyone could help me locate the series that would be great. Also does anyone remember the cartoon where the character could make rings on which he could throw at the baddies or fly on?
As a kid , in South Australia in the 1970s, I loved this show.when I would ask anyone of my peers if they remembered it they woulnt know what I was talking about.I would just like to say that I believe that Prince planet was a good role model for children. He was on the side of good. He did good. And he did it not for self gain but out of compassion. As a child I tried to live up to this ideal. Whether I succeeded or not I guess its not up to me to say. i like to think that i gave it a good try.
I started collecting them in the late 90's. I found them at various video stores, online - ebay, in various formats like 16mm and VHS. Nobody seemed to have them altogether. Apparently they were available for rent or sale in VHS format in the 80's. Unfortunately, it appears the studio originals are gone, lost in a studio fire. I ended up converting them to MPEG format to preserve what I had and putting them on CDs.
This was my FAVORITE cartoon growing up before Battle of the Planets came on TV. I don't know what made me love this cartoon sooo much because it was in black and white and was so basic in storytelling. Maybe it was because Prince Planet got his power from his necklace which in turn got it's power from the sun, I don't know.... but I loved this cartoon when I was a kid and I love that intro.
Funny reading these comments and seeing such similar things. This was my MOST favorite cartoon. Shoknifeman, I made a medallion out of a manila folder!
A station in Denver would play this at 3:30, my school got out at 3, so it was a race home to see it. They would play the episodes in rough order. I ALWAYS missed the last episode. and my sister would tell me about it. I didn't see the last one until a few years ago on tape. Characters DIED! I like it how Krag finally got it in the end
@sammysole1 WPHL, Channel 17 in Philadelphia. It ran on the Wee Willie Weber Cartoon Club in the afternoons along with Astro Boy, Eighth Man and many others from Japan.
@ALFAGOMMA Yep. An entry in wikipedia says it was on in Melbourne at 5:00pm but in Sydney it was definitely 4;00pm. I remember because of arguments over homework not being done.
This was my all time favourite cartoon when I was a kid (many, MANY moons ago). My friend and I used to create Prince Planet scenarios and act them out.
It is absolutely amazing what you can find on YouTube!
@cabmerlot61 i agree, it's a show I had not seen in some 38 years then along comes youtube a few years back and wow I am 4 again.
whats sad is the channel with all the episodes has it blocked in the country where I live, a few years back there was a tuber who had many of the episodes up, but he was taken out by a DMCA claim
hah! i never was that much into it-just you know (i am sure;) Battle of the Planets, Star Blazers, but it simply blew my mind to see your comment-weird how kids will do stuff like that. My mom made mine out of a piece of leather strap..and a cardboard circle with a P on it..which she cut out with seamstress scissors (the zigzag ones) so it'd be cooler, I would sworn it was in colour though...do you remember how colourful everything was when you were a kid?...the 70s were like that eh?..vivid.
and HOCKEY cards! remember the OPee Chee 72-73 set?..with the insane colours?..man..i re-collected that set a few yers back...damn..no wonder they are stuck in my mind.
I was never a big hockey card collector, I had a few but, when it became a business instead of just a fun thing to do, I gave it up....although I do collect 100 year old postcards now!
@Shoknifeman My dads would rip the cardboard off the string of his every time he would run around like a maniac and dive onto the couch when he was 4 years old.
great song too. i think it was recorded by a bunch of 3 year old girls that they got to sing. check out the kimba theme song. that one i heard was recorded by a young andy williams-check it out
Closing in on 51 here & remember the words like it's yesterday.

No one can compare, to the prince who wears, a medallion on his chest
Using all his might, changing wrong to right, Prince Planet, he's the best
Now it's no surprise, that he fights bad guys, and he makes the bad guys pay
Whether day or night, like a flash of light, Prince Planet's on his way
