hello, i have a benq fp73g s monitor. With my new graphics card, i set the desktop resolution to very high resolution (1280x1024). i also put my games resolution 1280x1024 but there was a thick black line at the right side of the screen. and when i set the games resolution to 1152x860 ( desktop still in same resolution), after a couple minutes my screen have many small black line, sometimes my screen becomes white with small dark grey lines.
i have a hp pavilion f1503 and the screen is completly blank but power is on. i opend it doesnt seem to have any cold spots and the capacitors look fine. what do you think?
THANK YOU. Saved quite a bit of money and was a learning experience. First time even messing with circuitry and soldering but got it done. So even without any experience soldering this isn't improbable. Yet again, thank you so much.
Excelent video. Thank you. I openned up my monitor (ViewSonic:VG2230WM) all the capacitors seem to be in good shape - no bulge. My problem : Display comes on for a few seconds than starts to flicker while the LED remains Blue. Any idea what else to look for ?
alright so i replaced my bad cap, it turns on fine again, but when it went out the colors and bightness changed, its really bright, grey, and almost cant see any color in it,any ideas what could need replaced now

hi there i have a 32" relisys lcd tv when i turn it on it all comes on and screen lights up but i can not get a display come up how can i fix that. thanks
okay, i want to make sure about this before i start. Today, my friend was about to throw away his SyncMaster 204B LCD monitor. He never used it. I wanted it because i wanted a LCD screen. When i connected the monitor to my computer, the screen would not light up at all. My friend came over, and he said he could see it very dimly, and i mean very dimly. Like it was still pitch black. I would like your opinion before i start replacing the components. Thank you.

hi there.great video...I have a strange problem. I have a viewsonic va1916w.When I turn it on it does work normally for 3 maybe 5 minutes and after the screen goes off but the indicating light stays on. I turn off and then on again the monitor with the power on button and then it turns on again and after that it does the same thing. I replaced a damaged capacitor but it didn;t solve the problem. Could you give me any idea of how to solve this. Thank you in advance.
@132aris This also could be an issue with the backlight PCB, from my understanding, this is integrated into the power board. Replace the power board if possable. Alternatively, replace the components that are directly connected to the backlight connectors (the connectors in 1:43)
Hi there, (great tutorial, thanks) I have a monitor just turn on I can see the screen on for about 30 to 40 seconds, do you have any idea? Also how can I tell capacitors are bad? thanks for your time.
@latropimax Could be caps, but you need to open it up and look at them. They will be obviously bulged on top, compared to all the other caps on the board... good luck!
Thank u very much for the tutorial very instructive I found 3 LCDs in trash and I just change the Capacitors 3 in each LCD... guest what !? IT WORKS !!!. it's 3 LCDs Lenovo Thinkvision L194wd 19" it cost me $24 for the 9 Capacitors. Now I'm thinking to build a Triple screen PC. Thanks again.
Yes they were the only ones bad i replaced a third one as well that wasn't bad but the same type.. I believe i found the problem and its with a blown 4A SMD Fuse is which from what i read is fairly common on the monitor i am working on i assume it blew from leaving the bad caps for too long. the rest looks good.
I tried this on a monitor before i found this video the power board of an acer 19 inch had 2 bad 220uf caps I replaced them properly but the monitor still does not turn on properly the green light comes on then goes amber indicating it turned on but there is no acer logo on the screen which happens during normal startup.
. I am assuming the blown caps also made the Inverter or back-light die as well does that sound like a good possibility to you?
@dough3208 Hi, were the two 220uf caps the only bad ones? Usually that's not the case. But if it is, I guess it is. You might have a look at the forum badcaps.net those guys are great at trouble shooting. I check out their site all the time, I love it... have a look...
@dough3208 if its a inverter there should still be a picture, to test that I believe that u can take a flashlight and aim it at the screen and you will see the picture
@26dolla the inverter is verified working Its something on the power board because i have another board from a working monitor that i tried and the monitor works fine with it installed. i replaced a 4 A smd fuse and 3 caps on the board and now the screen will just flash on/off its probably a bad cap that isnt bulged and noticeable I haven't got a cap tester to verify which ones are out of spec.
@dough3208 when this happens it could be different things, you may need to clean any caps liquid if any and the monitor could be going on to stand by mode after you fix it. always test with signal getting to the monitor when possible. Some caps don't bulge up as bad, must make sure of this (replace every suspicious cap)
I have a viewsonic va903m the defect is, it will only display for 2-3seconds then it will become black and the power led indicator remain green, when I turned off the power sw then turn on again it will stay on again 2-3 seconds then the screen turn black again but the power led indicator still green. I've done replacing the 2 bulged capacitor but the problem is still the same. Is there anybody who did fix this trouble before? your advise is very much welcome.
In how many languages do you read write and converse ? I can only do it in four, English is the third I learned, so if I make a mistake it is because I think in one and write in another.
When you achieve something similar let me know or perhaps you thing you don't need all them tongues cauz if English was good enough for Jesus is good enough for you, rite?
As a polyglot I never make fun of others as I don't know who I deal with.
Ha ha ha, why do I think Jesus spoke English? Funny that you should ask.
A woman in Texas running for governor when she as asked about bilingual education she said, "If English was good enough for Jesus is good enough for me" thus she covers all English language warriors like your self, I'm sorry you never heard it before, it is a classic.
@MrTonyshit80 It's a lot easier to replace them all when you have it open than to only replace the bad ones. The kits I sell come with all the capacitors you will need to replace all of the capacitors on the board. Of course it's you call, you can replace a couple and have to open the monitor up again in a few months and replace the others... it all depends on how much time you have I guess...
@bokenrosie Yes I have one for that monitor. You really need to open it up and a have a look inside to make sure it's a capacitor issue. Right now, I'm in the process of upgrading my web store and my eBay listings, so they may be down for a few hours... BTW, sounds like a cap issue...
Pure awesomeness ! I bought your kit and fixed a found in pristine condition next to the trash Viewsonic, in 15 minutes ! As soon as my wife saw it, she confiscate it. It now sits in the kitchen, acting as an internet TV !
Great vid! I have a Viewsonic VG2230wm that starts up briefly then immediately shuts off the screen with the blue power light on. I checked the caps but none are bulging. 2 move slightly. Solder on the other side of the board seems good. Should I replace all the caps anyway? They are all CapXons. I don't know what to test next. Thanks!
@sghill99 Thanks for the tip! I've been digging in their forums the last 2 days and learning a lot. I will get detailed advice from them. Thanks again, I'll let you know how it goes..
@913los I use the BK Precision 881 In-Circuit ESR Tester. This In-circuit ESR & DCR capacitor tester is specially designed to measure ESR (equivalent Series Resistance) on capacitors in the range of 0.47uF to 2200uF, in or out of circuit. A digital multi-meter won't do this.
This video was great! I had a problem with a Westinghouse monitor. It was very slow to start up and then eventually wouldn't start up at all. It had died, but was only two years old. I watched the video and concluded that the capacitors were fried. I replaced 6 of them and it worked!!! This is the first time I have ever attempted to fix anything electronic and am extremely impressed that I was able to do it. This saved me about $ 100. The capacitors and the soldering iron only cost $ 20.
My 19inc LCD monitor was hit toward the middle bottom. The buttons all work, I'm sure it's an internal problem with the monitor. But the screen is all white now. I don't know if it's done or if you know what the problem could be. (I'm hoping for a dislodged capacitor but i'm not sure).
@jilow if you bumped it a cable might have come loose. The white screen can be caused by a loose cable. When you open it to examine the cables, examine the capacitors, if any are bulged, then the problem may cap. related... Good luck!
@sallyrosenbaum You should be able to do it to most LCD's that have an interior power supply. If your monitor has one of those exterior power supplies, the brick type, then the re-cap probably wont work. You will have to open your monitor and examine the caps. If any are bulged, then you have a chance...
I have a Hanns.G HN199D Flat Screen Monitor and it was working fine but recently when I turned it on the power indicator light just flashes on & off On & off repeatedly at first for about five minutes now it's 20 minutes. I can barley see the silhouette of some type of shadow in the screen. like it's trying to come on. & i can hear a high pitched whine in the back. Then after about 20 minutes it comes on. I was wondering if this was a failed cap. Or power supply. thanks Matt.
@illbehavoir666 You need to open it up and examine the capacitors. If some are bulged out, then you stand a good chance with the repair, if they look normal, nice and flat the problem with your monitor probably is not capacitor related.
@The12Dy4 By the time you unplug the monitor and examine it, deciding how you are going to open it up, around 30 minutes has usually passed, at least in my case. Then by the time you get the cover off of the power supply board, you are looking at several more minutes. So by the time you get to the capacitors, any charge that was once in them is gone... Now this is for LCD monitors, I can't speak to other devices...
question, I have 2 old viewsonics (and i mean old, like circa 2003-2004) and one would not power on and the other would not show a picture. this is for the power, is the picture side fixable the same way? Maybe if I take the good board for power and good board for picture and put them together my monitor will work again?
And side question, my current monitor hdmi wont work, and the OSD menu craps out and goes into some sort of debug mode. Is that something that is fixable. (HG281D hanns-g)
@bastec666 Hi, you really need to open them up to tell if the problems you are describing are capacitor related. If you open them up, examine the capacitors on the boards. If all the capacitors look okay, meaning the tops are nice and flat, then the problems you describe are probably related to some other issue. If however, the tops of the capacitors are bulged out, then you stand a chance of a repair. Hope this helps...
My ViewSonic VX2035WM LCD monitor screen goes black after about 30 minutes of use. The backlight stays on, but the picture turns black until I unplug it and plug it back in in which is turns black again in a matter of seconds. I found that it is an overheating issue. It would do it when the supply hit about 40c. I kept a cool fan on it and it never got above 34c and never turned black. None of my capacitors are domed..but do you think replacing them will help? Thanks
@DexterGoneWild Dexter, I don't think replacing the caps is going to help you in this case. I've heard about overheating issues, and I think you may need to design some sort of fan attachment for the back of your monitor using a computer case fan. Google it and see what other folks have done...
@djsimple007 Radio Shack only has 85 degree C caps. I don't think those are going to help much, you really need 105 degree C caps. I was at Radio Shack last week and checked all of their stock, and all of them were 85 degree C caps...
Thanks for the video. Your instructions are very clear. I have 4 broken lcd monitors and dont have any electronic background. Hopefully I can fix it myself now. I will post it when my project is done. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Wow thanks for the video.Your vid instruction is very easy to understand.I have no electronic background. Now I can do it myself. I have 4 lcd that dont power up. Now its my turn. I will post it when im done doing my project.
I got to say thank you for posting this repair video.
I have a Viewsonic 2021m and i replaced 4 bulged capacitors that i bought from a local electronic store and followed your steps. I bought the exact uf and voltage size but my screen problems remained after the repair. Screen flashes white and after 5 min it would go white.
I went and replaced all remaining capacitors as well but alas problem remained.
I will order your kit to see if your combination of capacitors will work.
Cool tutorial! Only one question though: will this fix the vertical blue line running down the screen of my Westinghouse lcm 22w3? Or is that something different, and if so, what should I do about it?
I have a Westinghouse 17 inch monitor. The circuit board is identical to the one you are working on. I have only two capacitors that are domed on top. They are the two small ones. Will I need to replace all of the capacitors are just the two small ones? The rest of the capacitors are flat on top.
Thanks so much for this video! I've done electronics work before but finding out how to identify bumb caps was invaluable. My Gateway case was a bitch to remove!
@Jeauxyno1 Yep, opening the darn things up is always the hardest part of the job. They aren't made for easy dis-assembly are they! But once you get them open, the rest goes pretty fast... Thanks for the post!
Glad to hear it. As long as you see the bulged/distorted capacitors on your power supply board, you stand a pretty good chance of success. But, on the other hand, if you don't see the bulged/distorted capacitors, then you are probably wasting your time replacing the capacitors...
It's a good feeling when you connect the monitor to your computer after the repair, turn it on, and it fires up...
Also, after you remove the capacitor, use a wooden toothpick, heat the solder pad and push the toothpick into the hole from the solder side and it will open the hole up to accept the new lead, Solder won't stick to the toothpick. I've been a tech since 1973, I have LOTS of tricks ;-)
Rather than using a Putty knife, I use guitar picks. I find running them down the seams while gently prying them apart works well. If you slip you're not going to score the plastic or cut your hand.
@Randyincv That never occurred to me! Another thing that is useful (sometimes) is the tool used for removing a bicycle tire. It's a little thick on the end, but with a little bit of sanding/filing it works pretty well. The putty knife can and will leave some nasty scratches if you aren't careful!
@jrolson85 Looked around for something similar to what you describe, nada... You say, when you turn it OFF, it turns white? Usually the problems I hear about are the opposite, when you turn it ON it goes to white. The monitor works fine otherwise?
@sghill99 Yeah it's very strange, it works and looks normal when I turn it on.
But when I turn it off, it turns white and when I looked inside I seen the bulbs were still on... so to turn it off completely, I have to unplug it so the bulbs dont burn out or start a fire...
I wish I knew which component inside makes the bulbs turn off after you push the off button, so I could replace it.
Guess I will try replacing the capacitors and if that doesn't work, time to buy a new monitor.
wait, so what does this fix? I have a viewsonic, and it light up for a second, and then goes black, but i can still see the windows, although very faintly. i think its a problem with back light...
@eragonivanrakov Could be the backlight. In order to determine if your problem is possibly capacitor related you need to open up the monitor and look at the capacitors. If they are bulged on top, then replacing them could solve the problem.
he man! I got a monitor that I wish to repair ! the monitor BLINKS fast! on and off! what should I do? thanks :)

Yes they were the only ones bad i replaced a third one as well that wasn't bad but the same type.. I believe i found the problem and its with a blown 4A SMD Fuse is which from what i read is fairly common on the monitor i am working on i assume it blew from leaving the bad caps for too long. the rest looks good.
dough3208 1 year ago
I tried this on a monitor before i found this video the power board of an acer 19 inch had 2 bad 220uf caps I replaced them properly but the monitor still does not turn on properly the green light comes on then goes amber indicating it turned on but there is no acer logo on the screen which happens during normal startup.
. I am assuming the blown caps also made the Inverter or back-light die as well does that sound like a good possibility to you?
dough3208 1 year ago
@dough3208 Hi, were the two 220uf caps the only bad ones? Usually that's not the case. But if it is, I guess it is. You might have a look at the forum badcaps.net those guys are great at trouble shooting. I check out their site all the time, I love it... have a look...
sghill99 1 year ago
@dough3208 if its a inverter there should still be a picture, to test that I believe that u can take a flashlight and aim it at the screen and you will see the picture
26dolla 11 months ago
@26dolla the inverter is verified working Its something on the power board because i have another board from a working monitor that i tried and the monitor works fine with it installed. i replaced a 4 A smd fuse and 3 caps on the board and now the screen will just flash on/off its probably a bad cap that isnt bulged and noticeable I haven't got a cap tester to verify which ones are out of spec.
dough3208 11 months ago

PUTTING THE CAPS IN THE BOARD.
Do not push the capacitor all the way down and tight up against the board.
When it gets hot and expands the leads will brake from what ever it was connected in the inside of the capacitor.
Do not leave them up high either as you will damage the foil on the other side.
Fold a piece of paper and use it as a spacer, pull it out after soldering is done, that will give you the proper space between capacitor and board.
I thought I'd let you know.

why you take out all capoacitors...?
MrTonyshit80 1 year ago
@MrTonyshit80 It's a lot easier to replace them all when you have it open than to only replace the bad ones. The kits I sell come with all the capacitors you will need to replace all of the capacitors on the board. Of course it's you call, you can replace a couple and have to open the monitor up again in a few months and replace the others... it all depends on how much time you have I guess...

bokenrosie 1 year ago
@bokenrosie Yes I have one for that monitor. You really need to open it up and a have a look inside to make sure it's a capacitor issue. Right now, I'm in the process of upgrading my web store and my eBay listings, so they may be down for a few hours... BTW, sounds like a cap issue...

how can I be sure if the capacitor is gone .Can I use a voltage meter to check for current flow?
913los 1 year ago

(I'm hoping for a dislodged capacitor but i'm not sure).
jilow 1 year ago
@jilow if you bumped it a cable might have come loose. The white screen can be caused by a loose cable. When you open it to examine the cables, examine the capacitors, if any are bulged, then the problem may cap. related... Good luck!
sghill99 1 year ago
can I do this with a samsung 930? and I'm new to soldering but pretty handy
sallyrosenbaum 1 year ago

Or power supply. thanks Matt.
illbehavoir666 1 year ago
@illbehavoir666 You need to open it up and examine the capacitors. If some are bulged out, then you stand a good chance with the repair, if they look normal, nice and flat the problem with your monitor probably is not capacitor related.
sghill99 1 year ago
I see you didn't discharge the caps, isn't that dangerous?
The12Dy4 1 year ago
@The12Dy4 By the time you unplug the monitor and examine it, deciding how you are going to open it up, around 30 minutes has usually passed, at least in my case. Then by the time you get the cover off of the power supply board, you are looking at several more minutes. So by the time you get to the capacitors, any charge that was once in them is gone... Now this is for LCD monitors, I can't speak to other devices...
sghill99 1 year ago
question, I have 2 old viewsonics (and i mean old, like circa 2003-2004) and one would not power on and the other would not show a picture. this is for the power, is the picture side fixable the same way? Maybe if I take the good board for power and good board for picture and put them together my monitor will work again?
And side question, my current monitor hdmi wont work, and the OSD menu craps out and goes into some sort of debug mode. Is that something that is fixable. (HG281D hanns-g)
bastec666 1 year ago

Thanks
DexterGoneWild 1 year ago
@DexterGoneWild Dexter, I don't think replacing the caps is going to help you in this case. I've heard about overheating issues, and I think you may need to design some sort of fan attachment for the back of your monitor using a computer case fan. Google it and see what other folks have done...

I actually found a bulgy thang... where can i get replacement.. thangs? does radee-o shack have em?
djsimple007 1 year ago
@djsimple007 Radio Shack only has 85 degree C caps. I don't think those are going to help much, you really need 105 degree C caps. I was at Radio Shack last week and checked all of their stock, and all of them were 85 degree C caps...

Gryphonification 1 year ago
I have a Westinghouse 17 inch monitor. The circuit board is identical to the one you are working on. I have only two capacitors that are domed on top. They are the two small ones. Will I need to replace all of the capacitors are just the two small ones? The rest of the capacitors are flat on top.

I replaced the capacitors with the new ones from your kit and my problem went away.

jrolson85 1 year ago
Glad to hear it. As long as you see the bulged/distorted capacitors on your power supply board, you stand a pretty good chance of success. But, on the other hand, if you don't see the bulged/distorted capacitors, then you are probably wasting your time replacing the capacitors...
It's a good feeling when you connect the monitor to your computer after the repair, turn it on, and it fires up...
sghill99 1 year ago
Also, after you remove the capacitor, use a wooden toothpick, heat the solder pad and push the toothpick into the hole from the solder side and it will open the hole up to accept the new lead, Solder won't stick to the toothpick. I've been a tech since 1973, I have LOTS of tricks ;-)
Randyincv 1 year ago
Rather than using a Putty knife, I use guitar picks. I find running them down the seams while gently prying them apart works well. If you slip you're not going to score the plastic or cut your hand.
Randyincv 1 year ago
@Randyincv That never occurred to me! Another thing that is useful (sometimes) is the tool used for removing a bicycle tire. It's a little thick on the end, but with a little bit of sanding/filing it works pretty well. The putty knife can and will leave some nasty scratches if you aren't careful!

Recently when I turn off my monitor it turns white because the lamps inside dont turn off. I opened it up and noticed 4 bulging capacitors.
Will replacing these fix my problem?
jrolson85 1 year ago
@jrolson85 I wish I could say with certainty that it would fix your problem.
If you opened up the monitor and all of the capacitors looked fine, then I would say replacing them would probably be a waste of time.
Since 4 of them are bad, you can try and hope for the best, but I don't want to tell you that replacing them will definitely fix your problem...
Sorry my answer isn't more definitive...
sghill99 1 year ago
@jrolson85 What kind of monitor is it?
sghill99 1 year ago
@sghill99 Westinghouse LCM-22w2 lcd monitor.
I dont know what else would be causing this besides a bad capacitor.
jrolson85 1 year ago
@jrolson85 Looked around for something similar to what you describe, nada... You say, when you turn it OFF, it turns white? Usually the problems I hear about are the opposite, when you turn it ON it goes to white. The monitor works fine otherwise?
sghill99 1 year ago
@sghill99 Yeah it's very strange, it works and looks normal when I turn it on.
But when I turn it off, it turns white and when I looked inside I seen the bulbs were still on... so to turn it off completely, I have to unplug it so the bulbs dont burn out or start a fire...
I wish I knew which component inside makes the bulbs turn off after you push the off button, so I could replace it.
Guess I will try replacing the capacitors and if that doesn't work, time to buy a new monitor.
jrolson85 1 year ago
wait, so what does this fix? I have a viewsonic, and it light up for a second, and then goes black, but i can still see the windows, although very faintly. i think its a problem with back light...
eragonivanrakov 1 year ago
@eragonivanrakov Could be the backlight. In order to determine if your problem is possibly capacitor related you need to open up the monitor and look at the capacitors. If they are bulged on top, then replacing them could solve the problem.
