  • 1:17 that gyrating just doesnt look right LOL

  • Insert Paramount Television "Blue Mountain" logo with 1979 Lalo Schifrin jingle when the video stops.

  • I was a sophomore in high school. How fun was that?!?!

  • I didn't realize when I was a kid how out of synch (and scantily-clad!) the Solid Gold Dancers were!

  • "We are Fam-i-ly!"... Lightning & EXPLOSIONS! Alright, make me know it.

Bring this show BACK. The costumes were hot for your nerves.

  • they did the matrix dance back then!!! What's amazing is how they had a routine for 20 songs!!!! How often did this show come on during the week? I never watching this show, but the SNL Lebron James Solid Gold spoof sparked an interest and the one of the best choreographer Fatima Robinson said she use to watch this show

  • Wow!!! All the songs in the countdown were all really good songs. We used to talk about it at school recess. I couldn't tell ya what's on the charts nowadays... probably rubbish.

  • The legendary Robert W. Morgan counting down the hits!

  • no wonder it was cancled they forgot to do number 1

  • wtf, why do they finish with number two instead of no. 1?

  • You can't get more 1979 than this. The credits, surprisingly, were chyroned, with the exact same font as that of "Benson" and the final season of "Soap" as well as the game show "Treasure Hunt '81."

  • @jnadle1 that was the same font later used for Empty Nest, Golden Girls, and Blossom (they were made by the same people who made Soap and Benson)

  • I was only 1 when this originally aired, but I do remember watching this w/my mom in the early 80's. Tv sucks today! I wish that this kind of tv would come back along w/soul train, american bandstand & dance fever... I bet the #1 was my sharona, but I could be wrong

  • @nailqueen1000 same here. What month in '78 were you born? I'm February.

  • I'm watching a nice Solid Gold clip, but there is a horrid Justin Bieber ad by Google right under the screen. Makes me wanna vomit.

  • A-men brick betty!!

  • A-men brick betty!!1

  • what the hell whos number one i needs to know dont keep me in suspense

  • numbe one was yo mama.

  • John Stewart's hair looks like Kramer

  • Boy, I can see why Darcel became the principal dancer. She could move that pelvis up, down and all around!! perfect female body!!

  • 1:15 W W W

  • Commas people, commas!

  • @reymatt76 , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

  • Thank you!!

  • ooops I take that back @ 1:15 ...that is the tightness I was lookin for

  • the dancing doesnt seem tite like in the other vids here on the youtuber..

  • The Pointer Sisters were WAY ahead of their time! They were so awesome. Too bad they could never do another album. Bonnie's been gone for years and June had lost her life to years of hard living with cocaine at least they could still record with her alive but with just two(Ruth and Anita) they probably just called it a day.

  • awesome show i was 9 at that time the first guy singing did suck bad that was number one how but they didnt have much to pick from and not near the technology we do today but i loved that show and alot of music from that time until now

  • Half the singers on this show are now dead of old age.

  • at in their 60's but they did know their stuff when they were hot on the charts

  • what was number 1 damn you

  • I just to watch Solid Gold Dancer back in the day.

It seems like a century ago now....lol But those memories come back. I remember Dance Machine show with that guy on there during the disco era. Can't remember his name?

  • i remember watching this when i was a kid . saturday nights.

  • way too much john stewart in this clip..

the show was a few years before mtv. it wasn't a must see, but it had it's moments.

  • well your opinions nonwithstanding viewrs and fans back then disagreed with that statement. it (amasingly) lasted 8 years so It made some mark on the 80s TV

  • ok it was kind of a must see along w/kirshner's rock concert and that thing we did with the TV and the stereo. i wish i could spell what it was called. when you watched a taped perfornace (at leat on the west coast) and turned the stereo to the station that was playing the concert.

    it was fun.

still too much john stewart for thhis clip, imho.

  • I think it was called simulcasting.

  • That John Stewart song sounds like Fleetwood Mac.

  • I think Stevie Nicks sang back up on that, so your not far off!

  • what were numbers 12, 18 and 22?

  • Disco Fantastic!!!!

  • 6:49 I didn't know John Stossel was a Solid Gold Dancer?

  • Wow, how did you get such great video quality without a HQ option?

  • This was worth watching just to see John Stewart, unfortunately lip-synced :P (You can tell because Stevie Nicks wouldn't be singing duet/backup and be hidden someplace). Still think his album 'Bombs Away Dream Babies' should have been bigger than it was. Good post!

  • oh that's were Britney Spears got the outfit for her "Toxic" video

  • Don't blame them, a lot of those songs were simply undanceable. HOW COULD A GROUP OF STUDIO DANCE TO A ROMANTIC SLOW JAM? OF COURSE THEY WERE GOING TO LOOK RETARDED! Solid Gold was about studio dancers dancing to top 10+ hits. stupid concept by todays perfectionist standards (CBS/Paramount wouldn't be caught dead shopping something like this today)

  • The #1 song was "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" by Rod Stewart.

  • 1:15 Genius!

  • The dancing improved in later seasons.

  • Wow, I never realized this guy was with the Kingston Trio. This is a great song and his Kingston Trio was good too.

BTW, those solid gold dancers may not have been he best dancers in the world but they look FANTASTIC!

  • What was Number #1?

I sat through all that gyrating only to get to #2?

  • Anyone besides me get the impression John Stewart was heavily influenced by Neil Young?

  • I remember watching this show on my old, small black and white televison when I was a kid. Goodtimes, goodtimes.

  • what did John Steward die of?

  • It says on his website: "John Stewart died January 19, 2008 in San Diego, California.

John suffered a massive stroke or brain aneurysm early Friday morning in San Diego and died peacefully with his family and friends by his side."

  • who choreographed this shit..an ex porn star???? i mean, during "after the love is gone" the dancers looked like hookers settling down from a night on the job.

  • I remember, even as a kid, watching it and only seeing all the pelvic thrusts...even to the slow songs. Is pretty bad when a 10 year old knows that it aint Twyla Tharp running the show....lol

  • Twyla Tharp would have been better, but I'd take the Solid Gold dancers over the Hullabaloo hoofers any day.

  • YES! I think this would indeed be a hit if it came back. Better than all the dancin', singin' and cookin' with the stars crap.

  • haha extra sleezy pilot version :D

  • OMG. Sweet moves.

  • They really gotta bring this show back. I wanna see the new dancers rock out to the latsest Nickleback song.LOL!

  • That is Stevie Nicks singing back up on Gold by John Stewart right?

  • yes it is.

  • yes

  • Shit the music of 79 a time of no CDs,MP3s,cell phones,PCs - nothing but good old vinyl and album covers. Thanks for the clip.

  • Great to hear Robert W. Morgan announcing. He was a radio legend in Los Angeles and I think this was his biggest national gig. He passed away a few years ago.

  • @rnjhome 12 years ago yesterday, to be precise. May 22, 1998. RIP

  • Dude, this was almost 30 years ago!! I remember watching this show on a small black and white televison set when I was ten years old.

  • Oh Lordy! I can't believe my parents me at 10 years old watch this '79 strip instruction. Love the song though. Steve Nicks on back up???

  • John Stewart was awesome when he replaced Dave Guard in the Kingston Trio. I'd never have expected to see him perform on Solid Gold. RIP.

  • Thanks for posting these clips of one of the best shows of all time! Two things: 1) What was the #1 song of this pilot? and 2) Could you post more clips of the SG countdown featuring "Stop Dragging My Heart Around," "Come On, Eileen," "Hearts," and "Don't Stand So Close to Me?" Thanks alot.

  • The #1 song was "Hey Nineteen" by Steely Dan. Unless some one can correct me. But I'd bet on it...

  • number one was Do You Think I'm Sexy- Rod Stewart. KISS, Cheap Trick and the Piña Colada, Rupert Holmes songs should have all been there as well.

  • for those who want to know, the actual title of the Rupert Holmes track is "Paradise".

  • Wow, pretty racy for 1979.

  • LOL, yeah it was kinda racy for the time. I remember my mom not wanting me to watch Solid Gold because of the way the dancers were dressed. And I was 15 at the time!!

  • Hey london...they were also pioneers in syncing up their dance moves perfectly. Now any 3 kids on the corner can do it. Whether that's good or bad...there's room for wonder.

  • Styx were a bunch of studio musicians ?!?!? No way !!!!!! Dennis DeYoung started the band when he was playing accordian with the Panazzo brothers on bass and drums. Love them girls dancin' though! Yowza !!

  • Admit it - you stole some of your dance moves from the show!

  • I loved Solid Gold!! Faithfully watch it every sat. night.Jon Stewart- Gold, died recently.

  • great track !!! this song is GOLD!! you know nothing!

  • what happened to numbers 4, 3, and 1?

  • Number 1 was "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" by Rod Stewart.

  • Wow tkas me back

  • wow where did you find this,i remember watching this as a 12 year old,i watched it every sunday night then talked about solid gold at school with my friends,

  • I can't believe I never heard this song before- Love it! So early 80's!!

  • God , don't forget great duo w/ Stevie Nicks!

  • I think Disco was ruling with an iron fist. Steve Dahl where are you when we need you!

  • wich was numero 1?

  • I think it was Rod Stewart "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy"

  • Agreed! It was Rod Stewart!!

  • i remember watching stewart on solid gold when i was 10. i have loved the song ever since.

with as bad as tv is today, kinda makes you wish they would bring this show back. i guess the only problem is the music today stinks too.

  • COOL!!! My parents always thought this show was nasty and banned it from our tv. But I always sneaked to my room and watched it. Man, what awesome dancing and costumes! 1979 was a great year for music.

  • LOL

  • @fitforlife43 My parents hated it too. They referred to the SG dancers as "tramps" & "prostitutes" but I admit that I enjoyed watching it especially when one of my brothers babysat me. I got to watch whatever I wanted when that happened.

  • @fitforlife43 WTF?!?!? were you raised in Utah?? LOL J/K

  • There will never be a show like Solid Gold.I miss It.I grew up watching this show.

  • the first time i ever heard this song I assumed it was Johnny Cash

  • The more I hear this, you make sense! Haha!

  • These are some hot ladies!!!! and i'm gay but dammmmn..........

  • OMG!! EVERY SONG is incredible!! Music sucks now!!

  • @BrickLaneBetty I couldnt agree with you more. Look at a chart anytime in the 70's and 80's and almost every song is good and identifyable. Now they could never have a show like solid gold or american bandstand because music is awful.

  • RIP John Stewart!

  • He's actually really funny on the Daily Show. You should check it out!

  • Kanan Rd. is in Ventura county.

  • That was great!!! There will never be a show like Solid Gold. So much talent was involved in that phenomenon. Thanks for sharring!!

  • Join the crowd. TRL sucks ass compared to this.

  • Other's that Robert W. Morgan not mentioned as part of the 1979 Radio & Records Top 40 Chart

    1. Do Ya Think I'm Sexy (Rob Stewart)

    3. Reunited (Peaches and Herb)

    4. Sail On (Commodores)

    7. Sad Eyes (Robert John)

    8. My Sharona (Knack)

    9. Heart of Glass (Blondie)

  • @jianoran07 I saw "Solid Gold '79" back in the day (before people were actually using the phrase "back in the day"--lol :D ), and the BEST part IMHO was a live clip of Supertramp doing "The Logical Song". IIRC it was filmed in Paris (so it was probably about the same time they did their live album there). So why isn't it in any of these "Solid Gold '79" clips YouTube???? Were there problems w/copyrights or something?

  • P.S. I don't remember what number it was (anybody?...), but it WAS one of the songs on the countdown.

  • @psykdiva The #1 song was from Rod Stewart "Do you think I'm sexy".

  • Driving over Kanan singing to my soul....Kanan is a highway in California. Stevie Nicks is his backup singer. Is it me or does he look like Krammer? The dancers are hot!

  • Thanks for the info. I thought the background vocals sounded familiar.

  • @SolidGold1980 Lindsey Buckingham also helped on the song FYI. Is it me or does John Stewart look like he's lip synching the lyrics. Ashley Simpson could learn a thing or two from watching these seasoned musicians perform. She was awful!

  • I thought he was saying Laurel Canyon all these years.
