thanks for this video i really like how you dubbed the "live video" with the CD audio recording instead. It matches or is in perfect sync! good job!
...I watched the original live version of this video as well in youtube, but the audio was such bad quality (not because of the performers but because of bad sound quality) so I turn to your video upload again and again instead when i want to hear this song.
I'm old enough to remember them in the late 80's, there was not a clear concept of gothic or even dreampop. Many bands of the time, or even single songs were just "Dark", not even darkwave, and I remember have seen a "goth" girl in 1992 with a shoulder bag with "Cocteau Twins" painted (in my country there was no such thing as "gothic people" until the late 90's). Many of the first goths listened CT and other 4AD bands that are clearly not gothic by modern classifications; they influenced them.
I agree! This is not a GOTHIC music! Even "so called" dream pop is not a good description! This music is so deep and emotional. They really defined the principles of modern music! So early!
oh please...for heaven's sake...don't call the Twins "gothy"....that is an insult mate...no offense intended so please don't jump my bones on this matter but I have been hearing quite enough of the "gothatization" of bands...the other day some bloke did a similar statement on Dead Can dance...sheeessshhh... The Twins and their sound is original...the only movement they might be guilty of inspiring is the shoegazing brigade...like slowdive...
@Sandboge up until about 1990, the only people I ever met who owned CT records were either full-on goths or gothy students (as opposed to indie students). Same goes for DCD who, until they started appearing on Ibiza chillout albums and blockbuster soundtracks were... listened to by mostly goths too
(In the 80s 4AD was a very "goth" label in that sense But then we loved everything from CT to New Order to Crass to Rocky Horror. Music was music.)
Garlands and Head Over Heals are gothic albums. Even Robin and Liz have called those that way. Songs like Hitertho, and Laughlines are gothic as well. So call it like you want it, ethereal pop, post punk,...they're both inspired by the gothic-darkwave genre. And yes,i agree, thanks to the CTs we know now the ethereal pop and Dreampop.
Maybe. But in fact, they're the creators of the Ethereal style. Their early works were a great influence on bands such as Love Spirals Downwards, Lycia, Trance to the Sun or This Ascension.
I heard this song first when I was around 15 or 16. It left a great impression on me. It wasn't the Beatles or the Stones. Or The Ramones, Bee Gees, Eagles, Blondie, Black Flag, Dead Kennedies, etc. It was Cocteau Twins who shocked me out of my youth and made me learn how to feel.
Totally agree, I feel so lucky to know them while am in this age. To be a 17 years old teenager who is influenced by such a band; is very lucky. Cocteau Twins made me learn how to feel too : )
New Age is a very specific kind of holistic/spiritual type of music (generally) appealing to the new age movement. It is generally SAFE and light. Cocteau Twins were one of the most groundbreaking, cutting edge artists of their time, and in their earlier years their music was particularly dark (this track is a fine example). I think Milk and Kisses can probably be identified as "New Age" but it's nominal. They'd revolt if they heard their music described as new age.
I disagree. First, I don't know why you feel you must insult New Age music by calling it "Safe" just to separate the Cocteau Twins from it. Secondly, Cocteau Twins were never New Age, not even later. If you read or listen to any of Liz's interviews, you learn that she was sexually abused when she was young. Much of her latter work (easier to understand btw) with Cocteau Twins, focuses on self awareness and healing. Cocteau Twins have and always will defy description.
The Twins sound goes beyond ethereal, and Elizabeth has SUCH command and control of her amazing vocal range. To me, this is the music of the spheres... * sigh... * :D
Is it just me, or do others also see Elizabeth Fraser almost as the legendary Russian Queen Catherine The Great, who is known in history for having an IMMENSELY romantic heart..there's something about the icy winters of Russia & the music of CT & her incredibly powerful presence...i dont know.. Btw i agree, this is a VERY well-editted clip...thanks for sharing it with the rest of us bluebelljp : )
I like to think of the Cocteau Twins as "birds-eye" for the altitude and air in much of their music. My best guess is that Elizabeth saw changes in Grangemouth, Scotland while growing up. There is a very big chemical plant built there. Many churches too. Possibly, Elizabeth saw the changes that came with people shuffling to church, or jobs at the chemical plant. The sky would hang low over them all with cloud formations. Really incredible that she came out of Grangemouth with her music.
Thanx for the insight TwoBun. It explains a lot which is nice due to the somewhat obscure nature of CT's lyrical universe--at least to an "outsider's" ears. She's such a lovely soul though, despite the deceiving words..i mean 'deceiving' as in you hear something else besides the description of the everyday 'mundane' life in Grangemouth. The joy&pain in her singing is VERY powerful&intense that it makes it so damn hard not to fall in-love. She is a sexy woman,a mother& a child all at the same time.
Their music has always seemed so "Real" and "Unreal" at the same time. I've listened to the Cocteau Twins a lot for years. They're one of the few "things" that calm me down. With the internet, I was able to discover more about them. I guess the key to the Cocteau Twins is Grangemouth, with it's chemical stacks and churches. I don't know if there's any other music that performs as well as the Cocteau Twins style.
What do they say about her over at Grangemouth? Also, I concur with the mother and child thing. I don't know why though, I just always felt about it that way and with the same phrasing.
I wore this record out in one month, and had to replace it several times, before the CD, but I always preferred it on vinyl. Meanwhile, my Ex would change the lyrics to this one, to jokingly annoy me - "Wholesale, Retail, On Sale - I got it at Loehmann's!"
hahah, i know , often reading someones interpretations of CT lyrics can crush something fragile. years back I read the "lyrics" from a Japanese site to 'pearly dew' and it has ruined the mystery and worse of all i just know the lyrics were just so wrong. i need hypnotherapy to erase that 1 thing=D .
My best guess for the Cocteau Twins music is "birds-eye" for the altitude and air in much of their music. I think Elizabeth saw changes in Grangemouth, Scotland with people shuffling to churches and jobs in their big chemical plant. The sky might have often hung low over them all with cloud formations, and whatnot. So yea, churches, chemical stacks, and low hanging clouds. --Cocteau Twins-- amazing.
It's english, only that she plays with her singing so that it isn't clear. I think it's quite brave for an artist to dare abandon the message of his song in order to achieve another goal

Unsure how add-friend works, but apparently, Guthrie's on Fieldtriqp's Myspace friendlist. (The q is silent)
So, does Guthrie like Fieldtriqp or does Fieldtriqp like Guthrie or both?
Anyway, I like both CT and Fieldtriqp and invite you to take a special triqp and see what you think-- especially Old Haunts album.
