I meant that the transcriptions of Beethoven's Symphonies for piano by Liszt are little known outside serious musical circles, not Liszt himself. His Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano are loved by many (including me)
En una época en que la única opción de conocer las grandes creaciones musicales era viviendo en los grandes centros musicales, , Liszt, siendo un virtuoso famosísimo, contribuyó en gran medida a su difusión mediante estas transcripciones..
I beg the charactarization of Liszt as being "little known outside serious musical circles". His Hungarian Rhapsodies for example, are an important part of our cultural heritage, and i'll bet a good 90% of Europeans are familiar with one or more of Liszt's memorable melodies, even if they don't know who the composer is.

I stand corrected!! This is indeed the first time i have heard of them, so they must indeed be "little known" :--+). Please forgive me for not taking up your "friend" invitation, by the way - it involves some silliness with cell phones which i am reluctant to get involved with. Thanks again, however, for posting this exotic and interesting musical translation-creation!!!
Thats fine :) I never knew that these Transcriptions existed until I found a page showing different versions of Beethovens 9th! (amongst other things the page said that Liszt also transcribed the 9th for two pianos which I have a recording of, Wagner transcribed the 9th for orchestra, choir and piano, and once the 9th was sung and recorded in French!) The Beethoven Symphony transcriptions show Liszt's great skill
I also make a friend invite everyone who makes a comment of any video that I post
@mozpiano2 I knew of these transcriptions as a boy. I bought Glenn Gould's Beethoven sonata recordings when I was young and subsequently his recording of Beethoven's 5th symphony transcribed by Liszt. Eye opening. And yes Liszt is a genius—there is little doubt.
I ADORE this transcription! Liszt was a special virtuoso who could both dazzle at the piano AND compose original masterpieces, not to mention write unparalleled arrangements like this. He was amazing. Thanks!
I think it's the very opposite of Chopin's pianism. You know, Chopin was interested in making the piano unique from other instruments by making it sound like the human voice, (bel canto) whereas Beethoven and Liszt's piano writing was often called "symphonic". This is one of the main reasons why Liszt liked about Chopin, Liszt was open-minded to many types of music, unlike Chopin. (Chopin only liked Bach, Mozart, Rossini, etc) it was Liszt who used gypsy themes to compose Hungarian Rhapsodies.
Hmm. To me, there were symphonies Liszt could transcribe successfully, e.g. Pastoral, with a bit changing of the painting, but still beautiful, and the light 1st. But when we come to the Choral symphony, I'm not so sure... I think Franz said sometime that he will be unable to transcribe the Choral symphony. Especially the 4th movement; a piano cannot give a hair of the grandeur given by the choral and orchestral forces. The opening chords sound like chopping meat!

@mozpiano2 Would you happen to have the second movement of the 9th as transcribed by Liszt as well?
