  • I have heard that lyrics of 'Les Sucettes' has double meaning. According to Wikipedia(Jananese edition), Gall didn't understand the concield meaning, when this tune rang the bell. In those days, she pacifered lollypops on TV and Video clips without comprehencing hidden meaning. Later she confessed that when she got to know it later ,she cannot go outside from embarrassment, and the anger to Gaisbourg for a while.

  • imo she was lying about not knowing the meaning. it suited her (claiming not to know) at the time she made the claim.

Mais oui au sérieux!!.. think about it, two great singers singing a great song with two different perspectives... way different perspectives... c'est la richesse de la langue francaise :P

  • Serge Gainesbourg is a complete asshole - but in the best style possible

  • I have a feeling that this song is about sucking cock.

  • @megasxlr211 lol, yeah maybe it's about his asking for that Shiksa Goddess to suck his big yidden you-know-what!

  • serge is so cute >.<

  • @niaiserieeeeee "serge is so cute" or nasty!!! :D

  • 1:58 France thought it was her queue

    PEPERE PERVERS!!!! Enculé de merde!!!!!!!!!

  • What a bastard Serge Gainsbourg! I used to respect him but this so INCREDIBLY LOW!!!! Do not tell me that she understood this... Her innocence is obvious

FUCKING BASTARD GAINSBOURG!!1 Enculé de merde Gainsbourg!!!

  • @SouthAmericanGirls YES!!! he is a pure asshole!!!

  • @MrJocko111 No, just a mentor ... doing a great public service ... ;-)

  • simplemente un GENIO!!! JAJAJJAJAJ

  • omg, that face in the background at 0:52 scared the hell out of me :S creepy!

  • It's easy with hindsight to say "How could anyone NOT miss the double meaning?", but you hear what you want to hear, and it's public awareness which matters most. Maybe 60's culture was really more innocent than we think. As late as the 80's, the BBC banned Frankie Goes to Hollywood's 'Relax' because a DJ objected to the lyrics as being about oral sex, but Hayzee Fantayzee got away with 'John Wayne is Big Leggy' which was about anal sex because the connotation was never publicly noted.

  • my french isn't great but I can understand some of this.

I can't beleive they got away with the bit with 'slides down Annies throat. She is in paradise'

    o_O

  • @3vil27 hahahaha ! ;-)

  • lol! he looks like some old pervy in a nightclub trying to get his wicked way with a 19 year old.

I <3 GAINSBOURG ;)

  • -- I've seen a documentary where Gainsbourg insists that France Gall had no idea what the song meant (and she was very upset/offended when she found out). I still don't believe it. I don't care what a difference in the time period there was. I think any teenager singing a song like this, about the joys of sucking on lollipops (including the play on words anis/penis), HAS to know wtf the song is about. If she didn't, she was the most naive thing to ever come out of the 60's. I <3 Gainsbourg.

  • @cantecleer I agree with you. If the real meaning of the song upset her, perhaps because it changed from a girls fantasy to the reality of what it really meant; and it shocked her. I hope I made myself clear.

  • dirty song or not, i don't care! i just love this song!

  • serge Gainsbourg french song writter . very dirty song of sex in 1965. He is sting on the les sucettes.

  • I didn't know France could produce such a sexually innocent woman!

  • Cheer up, France, at least it wasn't about fisting.

  • @Widmerpool99 LOL !

  • Gainsbourg <3

  • ah quel brigand! je t'adore!

  • How did Serge get away with being a pervert his whole life? He wrote a song for a girl with a strong sexual innuendo and made various other musical references about sex in many songs....I'll never forget him going on TV and telling Whitney Houston he wanted to fuck her! hahaha

  • @joshster89

    i demand a link to that! yesterday!11

  • Comment removed

  • @apo181 Search for "Whitney Houston Serge Gainsbourg"

¡Ah! Gainsbourg poseía un sentido del humor ¡excelso!.

  • Vive la France!

  • aww te amo france gall

  • Its funny how I was reading all these comments on penis and the subtextual meaning of the song when I suddenly realize that the watermark on the top right hand corner says "TOUCH". Coincidence, much?

  • @nurulpss You mean a subliminal message, perhaps? Ah, well done Sherlock; the plot thickens and is getting longer......great... another double entendre/ subliminal message...I didn't mean it.......really.

  • You're just a bunch of pricks calling her an "innocent girl". Of course she knew the real meaning of the song! Serge was a fucking genious, maybe too much for you....

  • gotta love serge

  • what an incredible song !!!

  • Oh blah, of course she knew. She's just using this as part of her Lolita-esque voice and approach. You'd have to be an idiot not to get the lyrical reference.

  • esta cancion es tan dulce,me encanta

  • Look at that momentary smirk he makes at 0:46. It's almost like he's thinking "I can't believe I'm getting away with this!".

  • @vipersquad yeah, true ! that has been constantly on my mind - just pushing the limits - and as we all know he never stopped - the bastard; I met him when he offered her first hifi to Charlotte - very contradictory pictures

  • @vipersquad he's like "I gave that bitch a lollipop. Bitches love lollipops."

  • Serge was a genius, even though this may be a little messed up, he makes up for it with melody nelson.

  • Serge Gainsbourg no dubt was a musical genius.. was what a DESPRECIABLE BASTARD...Poor Gall

  • What a bastard, such an innocent girl... but still nice somehow. Well, she survived it.

  • Listen to his voice. It's the breathy voice of a true perv. Probably has bad breath to match. Gotta love it!

  • Serge the master lyricist! Music legend!!

  • ah... what a terrible, terrible thing to do, slimy little bastard, you can see it in his face, he's that stereotypical sickening Frenchman.

And then, one reflects on how innocent the world was when an 18 year old star, not to mention the censors, didn't get a double meaning that most 12-year-olds nowadays would get, and one is understandably dismayed. We've had to fall a long way to get to the Miley Cyrus-esque scandals...

  • @CaballeroCatalan what a stereotypical anti-french statement.

  • @CaballeroCatalan Ta mére a sucé des ours!

  • Gainsbourg deliberately filled the song Les Sucettes ("Lollipops") with double-meanings and strong sexual innuendo. On the surface, the lyrics tell the innocent tale of a girl named Annie who enjoys lollipops. However, it is clear that Gainsbourg intentionally created the theme as a metaphor for oral sex. Although a big hit, the song sat in stark contrast to genuinely innocent songs on the same album such as Je me marie en blanc ("White Wedding") and Ça me fait rire ("It makes me laugh").

  • @XL500GT Retrieved from wikipedia, 09/29/10

  • poor France. She was so ashamed when she understood the real mean of the song.. lol

  • dispicable

  • @pappywrong Despicable

  • The perfect triple threat a really beautiful voice , french accent and the completely geniusly wraped words of the fantastic Mr Serge Gainsbourg what more could anyone want?

  • At 1:31 Serge is very happy!!!

  • That dancing really doesn't go with the song...lol

    now there's a man who...loved...women. You know it's true.

  • can someone translate this song to english please??? or at least say the idea\meaning of it??? why does it have strong sexual innuendo???

  • @ricardosweet : look at wikipedia.

Here's an extract of the page Les Sucettes:

"Les Sucettes" was, on the surface, a pleasant children's song about a girl who likes aniseed-flavoured lollipops. But Gainsbourg's lyric was full of playful double meanings referring to oral sex, which Gall, aged 18, simply did not understand.

  • ok so once she got famous herself se denied having knowledge of what the lyrics may be taken as !! but in reality, serge, was and still is one of the greatest songwriters and musicians ever to coem out of france,, so its a pretty good bet for a girl to perform a song with him at the start of her career,,,,, and yes redthing he is a dirty bastard, but he is french !! they can get away with it..

  • she's so innocent, he's a pedophile

  • @marchissimo

    stop this, stupid ignorant.

    she is twenty something.

women are not poor and weak creatures, who need to be protected.

they are very aware of what they are doing. do you know women ?

    grow up a bit.

  • @aronron2727 you are stupid and ignorant. she was not even 19, it was the 60's and not only women are "poor and weak' creatures. I suggest you learn the facts and grow up yourself... i did a long time ago,

  • @marchissimo all you have to know is that annie loves blowjobs

  • Poor France Gall. The first time she sang that song, she was so young and "unaware," she did not get the meaning of the subtext at all, and could not understand why the public was shocked at her. Gainsbourg made his living on provocation... but he should've known better. France Gall's future husband Michel BERGER (great song writer in his own right) never forgave Gainsbourg for that dirty lollypop joke of his which could've ruined France Gall's career.

  • Mighty Lord! that guy is as ugly as sin. They both remind me of Beauty and the Beast.

  • diabolique tout simplement....I guess he was laughin so had in his heart:"I cant believe she actually fell for it! hahah freakin sweet"!

  • SKY ROCKETS IN FLIGHT AFTERNOON DELITE

  • maybe that bobbed dancer should have just got her own show...look at that frame stealer go go go....

  • I've just find out the story behind the song "Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son" and this song of song writer Serge Gainsbourg . Poor her, and poor women! Men should learn to respect women. She was to young to understand.

  • France sings in the innocent, celestial way, while Serge in the most worldly intention. That's how I still like this song sung by France.

  • @genie9teen: agree with you

  • Serge Great!!! haha!!

  • I Love serge!!! he is such a pedophile vampire monkey you gotta love him!

  • its so mean how he used her like that. ( She really didn't get the double meaning of the sing and took advantage of it..) This song is so dirty rofl

  • She reminds me of Sienna Miller here.

  • What's with the picture in the background at 0.53 ?

  • I beleive it's Richard Nixon.

  • it''s funny because Gainsbourg seems to enjoy the situation, to be amused by the fact that she doesn't understand what she's singing

  • @diloulou8 i know eh? the fact that she GENUINELY didn't understand the double meaning of this song funny.

  • @heterocyclist Sg was born in Paris, France FYI!

  • @heterocyclist

and what kind of pervert are you?

  • BRAVO xx

  • coquin

  • @lianetanguay

He did... She admitted it herself in an interview... she had no idea about the sexual content of what she was singing. She wasn't angry at Serge, she was still thinking he was a very brilliant man...

  • if i was to stare at a girl like that on the street her father would be on my ass quick

  • totally agree.. you wouldn´t get away with it.

  • turn the sound off- how predatory he looks-poor little france hasnt a chance-too bad i wasnt there to rescue her

  • In a way I wish I didn't know about the subtext. I'm watching this and thinking "Oh, what a lovely song, SG is such a great songwriter." and then I'm like "Oh yes, this song actually about head and here SG is singing this with a completely oblivious teenage girl." Hmm. Morally dubious to say the least.

That said, I have a total pedobear lesbian thing for France Gall, so I'm not a lot better. Le sigh.

  • Dirty fucking bastard. In the best possible way, of course...

  • @Redthing65 LOL

  • Merci!

  • Only a French person could/would define eroticism in 'degrees'. As an Englishman, I salute you... !

  • what is really wonderful about this song is the play on the pronunciation of anis which can be pronounced with or without the s. so when he says "penny" at some point, it really evokes "pénis" which is just flipping brilliant songwriting

  • @ericricou : worse, it says "pour quelque pennies / Annie / a ses sucettes à / l'anis" - so the s is really there at the right moment. Brilliant songwriting indeed! :)

  • @ericricou

Also, "Donnent à ses baisers", since 'baiser' the verb means something else

  • What did the song mean that shes lost n hes jus smiling about Write to me back with the meanin lol thanks?

  • it's about blowjobs

  • Well.. She was a 17 year old girl singing about sucking lollipops!!!.... He wrote the song!!!....

    I suspect theres a double entendre there!!....But i could be wrong!!.....x

  • Comment removed

  • @nikinox: You're right! SG wrote this song with deliberate use of sexual double entendres to be sung by a naive and innocent France Gall. This song caused a scandal in France at the time and set back her singing career despite being a hit.

  • magnifique serge !!

  • R.I.P. Serge Gainsbourg

  • No really. Hahaha... it is so funnny. The WOLF singing with little riding hood.

  • Serge au sommet de son art !! ... mdr

  • perhaps France Gall is innocent t this song but Serge is being true to it's meaning. I have a lot of respect for Serge in this version as he hides nothing and is very genuine.

  • I love how he knows what it's about but she doesn't and he's just grinning the whole time lmao

  • anyone who has this song, in this version. I would love to get it

  • You can a version with just her on eMusic. It's on a compilation called French Connection.

  • pour qqs penny....

  • this video's an absolute gem

  • gainsbourg fucktape

  • It really is little red riding hood singing with the wolf!!

  • to shinobi: A little unfair to Serge. Come on...

  • Has this song ever been recorded as a duet?

If so, where could I find it?

I have the versions where each of them sing the song by themselves, but together. Help would be appreciated, thanks.

  • HAHAHA!!!!!!looooooooooooool

  • ca coule dans la gorge d'Annie

    Lollipops don't COULE.

  • i like this song, but what is it really about. Didn't Serge not know that this song had any sexual innuendos and was angry to find out that that's how some translated it to be?

  • The song is about pleasure derived from giving "blow jobs", thinly veiled in a story about a young girl that like sucking lollipops. Many of Serge's songs have double or triple entendresthis one is a very blatant one. — France Gall, who was in her late teens back then, claimed she didn't know the true meaning until the song's release. I don't know if that's true. Three generations ago, where I lived, many women didn't know about such things until after their marriage

  • but then again, this was before Gall's time. And she wasn't a peasant girl, she was in show biz

Anyway, I like the song, especially because at France's age, many young women are still hesitating what they would prefer to suck onbesides, giving blowjobs is an acquired tasteI guess that after their first time, many young women think: I would have preferred a lollipop.

  • France was duped into singing this song by Serge who knew the audience would get it and found it quite funny. She found out later and was extremely upset, she even stopped working for the time being. Made her even more famous...

  • "I would have preferred a lollipop" hahaha love it! I think that could catch on as a way to turn men down - "I'd prefer a lollipop"

  • lol Serge is such a sneaky dirty man

  • wicked dancemoves going on there!

  • Serge is one dirty dog.

  • My god i love this! Serge & France Gall....amazing!!

  • Everybody knows in France it's about blowjobs....LOL

  • Any Frenchmen knows it's about BLOWJOBS...

    LOL

  • Not only Frenchmen ^^

  • Wow...this song... I always knew what it was about and French is my second language, plus I heard it when I was 13! I still love it though.

  • hahahaha gotta love the picture of the dying guy in the background at :53

  • Everything about this video is a gag! From the photos to the robot like dancers.

  • she was so pretty , i love her

  • she is an angel! :)

  • SHE IS

  • red riding hood and the wolf singing together...

  • For a few pennies

    Annie,

    Gets her aniseed lollipops.

They have the colour of her eyes,

    The colour of happy days.

    When the barley sugar,

    Perfumed with aniseed,

    Slides down Annies throat

    She is in paradise.

    *end*

  • For a few pennies Annie, Gets her aniseed lollipops. They have the colour of her eyes, The colour of happy days. Annie likes lollipops, Aniseed lollipops Annies aniseed lollipops Give her kisses An aniseed taste. When on her tongue Just a small stick remains, She jumps to her feet And returns to the drugstore.
  • I can try!(fuck character limit though ;/):

    Annie likes lollipops,

    Aniseed lollipops

    Annies aniseed lollipops

    Give her kisses

    An aniseed taste.

    And when the barley sugar,

    Perfumed with aniseed,

    Slides down Annies throat

    She is in paradise.

  • Can somebody translate this song?

  • I find it hard to believe that she was unaware of the sexual innuendo of the song, especially considering the way they are looking at each other in this video. Haha.

  • gainsbourg is such a creeper haha

/Flo
