A story well told, boys left their home and came back men, fighting a war they barely understood as one men once put it, disposable heroes fighting respectable wars
I only came across both Bok and "Die Kaplyn" recently through the New Rhodesian Forum and whilst I served in Rhodesia, not RSA, I found the combination of the song, video and lyrics extremely evocative, for my memories of a similar time and struggle. Like solvang1870 I found tears in my eyes. Thanks for the memories..
Bok truly is a bard. I had creeps all over my body. There's no doubt that Afrikaners feel proud of their heritage listening to him. Staan vas Suid-Afrika!
PROUDLY exSADF : Bakgat to Bok van Blerk who created this, you have done thousands & thousands of proud SADF manne a great service. It was & still is amazing to hear this song, remember and honor all those who served and those who did not make it home. For far to longs, us troepe, airman, sailors & tiffies have felt lost / forgotten BUT now we ARE proud again. I live in Oz, 2 days ago I marched with SADF Veterans at Melbourne Anzac Day parade... see SAMVOA on YouTube or google us ...
Do you remember the smell of the white dust, oom willie se pad, kaplyn, cordite and blood... Do you remember the smell of canvas , a R1, diesel and sweaty browns... Do you remember a flossie , ratpacks, kuka shops, shonas....the letter from home, mopaniebos, a casspir... Do you remember me.... I am still here.
As someone coming from a former communist state (Poland) I just wanted to say that I really appreciated this tribute to one of the last episodes of the Cold War. RIP to all SADF servicemen that never came back home from the Cutline.
not only you the valiant suffer still we the women who love you see your suffering nd watch you fight your demons and we cry in the night where you can't see us because we feel your pain and are helpless
Hitler once said, after we fought so well in the second world war under genl Jan Smuts. "give me only a hand full of boere, ( afrikaners ) and I will rule the world"
Do you know what it's like to be 17-18 and be called up to war? Many worldwide went through that - I know, but we that were here in this forgotten and wiped out war are denied the honour and pride of later generation's. Nobody know or care about our struggle and forced "oorlog"
I wouldn't do it differently should I have a choice but recognition for our efforts and sacrifices would be greatly appreciated.
You make a very pertinent point Pieter. Its a shame that our contribution is not officially recognised and that people can't put aside their differences now and grant due honour and respect to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice through just being caught up in this phase of history! To my mind and my heart, their sacrifice was not in vain. We will always remember.
I served with the SSB in '78/'79 and spent much time up there during the early phase of the whole operation.
i got some great respect for these guys, can't image how much it must suck seing the country you fought for crumbling before your eyes, must be real hard
I started my first border duty in 1976 it was the best time of my life. And after that time i serve four more times on border ( Remember the call up's 3 Months )
Amen brothers. We are scattered across the globe due to the lies and deceit of polititions. One thing they cannot take from us is the memories made and the battles fought In Namibie and Angola. They will never take my pride, my inherent strenght as a South African soldier that faced overwhelming odds. Respect, Honor and Courage.
In my humble opinion this song and lyrics are of great value to all the soldiers in the world...Poor is the Nation that has no Heroes, but beggared is the Nation that has, and forgets them. (too bad I forgot who stated so).
Very sad... but then, which war is not? My husband was not sent to the border - by God's grace he worked most of his 2 years in Pretoria in the Krykor office. Thank you, Louis, for making ballads about the South African history...
Very sad... but then, which war is not? My husband was not sent to the border - by God's grace he worked most of his 2 years in Pretoria in the Krykor office. Thank you, Louis, for making ballads about the South African history...
We owe it to our soldiers, no matter what country and what nationality we are of, never to forget the wars they fought in, the sacrifices they made for us. If we forget, we do not deserve peace at all.
I can't even put into words how much I admire the strength, stubbornness and resistance of the South African soldiers who fought in the Border War, without help from the outside. May your spirits live on forever.
Thank you so much - I served Jan 1987 -Dec 1988 and spent 6-months in my 2nd year "Op die Kaplyn" serving - This song made me cry and made think of the forgotten heroism. Here I am today living in the USA and asking myself why, but yet I a fiercely proud of my time there.
how did SADF conjured up such effective bush fighters? To gain an appreciation go back into SA history. I suggest you read Commando an autobiography by Deneys Reitz. A treasure trove of facts about the Boer War and how they fought the British to a standstill (very similar to Americans in WOI). at 17 he lived and fought through it all. A fascinating insight into the Boer psyche. This will help you gain an appreciation of their nature. Good reading
Sit in Australia. Wonder wat dit vir ons vandag betekin, al daai dapper manne wat vir Siud-Afrika gesterf het. Veraaiers wat ons land weg gegee het...
I was told by an American woman embedded in Iraq and protected by South African mercenaries that they were absolutely the best. I didn't surprise me...but made me so proud to be South African.
Absolutely the best song Ive heard in ages from my mother land....we all paid a price only to be forgotten. Hopefully this song will keep the memories of our fallen heroes alive..
These were my brothers. I am typing this through blurry eyes, eyes filled with tears. God bless you guys. You were the best. The world spits on us now, but we don´t care because we knew we were fighting the good fight.
South Africa what an amazing wonderful country... I know its fashionable and easy to ridicule honor and discipline and sincere love of country I wonder if SA will ever again conjure up such brave capable young men. I attended school with this generation of SA lads I wonder where they are now? God SA can use men with these qualities now

It's sad that even South Africa had it's on badly remembered war, and for so long all the songs and memoriums about the Vietnam War.
It's nice to see one of -- doubtless many -- "Forgotten Wars" given the proper tribute.

This song has brought back tears to my eyes, because I and my family were living in Ondangwa during 75-82.
I wonder how many of my schoolfriends were affected by the war ( at +/- 3:00).
I´d love to return and pay my respect, but NOT under this government.
