As an avid outdoors man with years of hunting and wildlife experience, I seem to have the same pro kitty point of view. I truly don't see the point in trophy hunting. Top predators in my book are just, that top predators. Man is no longer on the same field of play. That being said, I have no right to discredit another belief, or suit. Never forget land management means different things to different people.

I was raised in the Ozark Mountains in Missouri, some of my fondest child hood memories are of running coons w/ Walker hounds. Sometimes we'd shoot 'em out, sometimes we'd let the dogs fight. Overall, it was an experience like none other. I'd rather see a critter die of a bullet in his brain pan than rabies, or distemper, or hit by a car. hey folks, I'm from Oregon, where they outlawed using hounds to hunt cougars. Guess what? The population is booming and the cats are less and less scared of people, and moving into more populated areas because of overpopulation. It is a big deal, the cats need to be controlled as much as deer, elk, and coyotes.
In the U.S. & Canada from 1890 to 1990, Univ. of Calif. wildlife scientist Paul Brier found 10 human deaths and 48 injuries documented due to mountain lion attack.
FOR EACH YEAR during the same time period, two dozen human deaths and 200,000 injuries due to domestic dog attack were documented. That is 2400 human deaths and 20 million injuries due to domestic dog attack during the century of record.
The victims of all except one of the lion-caused deaths were unattended children.
Cougar attacks on humans are very very rare, I know this, what I'm saying is that since the hounds aren't out there helping hunters these cats are populating more and more areas as the population increases, and although attacks are rare, if it keeps going the way it has been they may become less and less rare.

I agree that the encounters are on the rise because of people being in cougar habitat, but I must ask, have you been in the high cascades in Oregon in the last few years? If you have you won't need studies to see that there are more cougars out there then there used to be in the early 2000's. Dog attacks are a completely different subject all together, which I can go into as well.
Refer to the statistics I cited below, which come from a book by Chris Bolgiano. Bolgiano took the data from a peer-reviewed source. And consider that cougar were far more plentiful in the early part of the 20th century

In all honesty, in the last 10 years I've heard quite a few more stories of cougars coming into more populated areas. Fort Klamath is an example, on the same hunting trip I saw the two cougars, I picked up a news paper in Fort Klamath where the headline read something like "Six Cougars Killed in Area Last Week" and I've also seen more than one account of cougars in and around towns on the southern coast, one incident being a male sitting in a tree watching children play in a school yard.
Probably in an area with a new development. That's my bet.

My method of measuring lack of fear in cougars is when they start to get closer to where humans are living. In Oregon they are getting closer, humans are moving farther into the back country, and the cats are coming down out of the hills farther than they have in the past. You could also admit some holes in your theory here, like I'm pretty sure you have never been in the areas of Oregon to which I refer, and therefore only have hearsay evidence where I have personal experience.
Each point that you've just made could be refuted with science. The fact that there are more encounters (if this is true) due to habitat encraochment does not imply a "loss of fear." It could simply be lack of experience on the part of cougars.

Controlled hunting is beneficial to predator populations. By removing some of the weakest animals, you improve the species. Over-hunting is bad. Light hunting is good.
Why is hunting foxes OK to you and not other animals?
Because, at least where I live, foxes are as much a pest as hares, rabbits, moles, or mice. They are very adaptable, and have entered cities, and towns. They hunt pets (small dogs, cats), they eat livestock (rabbit, chicken...), and the overhunting of their natural predators (lynx, wolves, king owls), have gotten the fox population out of control.
Other animals are protected, small population, predators (eagles, cougars lynx, and wolves), which are much needed, and endangered.
Cougars are adaptable as well. They also hunt pets and livestock, and if we don't keep their population under control, they'll become too successful a species and run out of natural prey.
Very gentle hunting encourages species improvement and population increase, by removing the weakest animals. Studies have shown that between deer that weren't hunted and deer that were, the deer that were hunted ended up having MORE fawns and those fawns survived better than the deer that were left alone.

Kills are not always quick and successful while taking down bigger game that will violently try to escape.
As a member of a wildlife federation I am always contributing to conservation projects.

I was raised in the Ozark Mountains in Missouri, some of my fondest child hood memories are of running coons w/ Walker hounds. Sometimes we'd shoot 'em out, sometimes we'd let the dogs fight. Overall, it was an experience like none other. I'd rather see a critter die of a bullet in his brain pan than rabies, or distemper, or hit by a car. Folks just seem to think that nature is the idyllic place where all the animals frolic together. LMFAO!!

The population is booming and the cats are less and less scared of people, and moving into more populated areas because of overpopulation. It is a big deal, the cats need to be controlled as much as deer, elk, and coyotes.

Usually they are not actual counts but estimates; estimates that take into account the habitat needs & available acreage.
Cougar encounter increase where human decide to lie in their habitat, not because of population increase. Are you concerned about dog attacks?

I agree that the encounters are on the rise because of people being in cougar habitat, but I must ask, have you been in the high cascades in Oregon in the last few years? If you have you won't need studies to see that there are more cougars out there then there used to be in the early 2000's. Dog attacks are a completely different subject all together, which I can go into as well.

Bapyou, I have seen two cougars, a large female and a half grown cub while deer hunting just to the east of Chemult, Oregon, and yes, I do know how rare it is to see a cougar in the wild and just how lucky I was to be able to see the pair of them. When I referred to being in the cascades I meant I've seen a lot more cougar sign, tracks, scat and kills than I did 10 years ago

In all honesty, in the last 10 years I've heard quite a few more stories of cougars coming into more populated areas. Fort Klamath is an example, on the same hunting trip I saw the two cougars, I picked up a news paper in Fort Klamath where the headline read something like "Six Cougars Killed in Area Last Week" and I've also seen more than one account of cougars in and around towns on the southern coast, one incident being a male sitting in a tree watching children play in a school yard.

My method of measuring lack of fear in cougars is when they start to get closer to where humans are living. In Oregon they are getting closer, humans are moving farther into the back country, and the cats are coming down out of the hills farther than they have in the past. You could also admit some holes in your theory here, like I'm pretty sure you have never been in the areas of Oregon to which I refer, and therefore only have hearsay evidence where I have personal experience.

The difference is that dogs are a domesticated species, and therefore have to be looked at in a different way than a cougar or a coyote. We, as a nation, use hunting as a means of controlling wildlife populations, and, although a lot of people don't see it, hounds are an important part of the conservation and control of bear and cougar populations in the west.

Lions drag helpless calves away from their mothers, rip their necks open, and then eat them. They also prey on baby deer, elk, and what have you. Though majestic and what not, they create a problem when it is ranchers losing cows, which is losing lots of money.

cougars are endangered not as the tigers. for ex in chile and Rgentina there arent many cougars left they have being hunted down and killed. and in carlifornia the cougar pupolation is getting lower and lower every year. get some information. instead of reading books.

You don't hunt predators (other than foxes), to help wildlife. You let predators live to regulate prey population.
It's fine to hunt stag, hare, or such. Not cougars!

Controlled hunting is beneficial to predator populations. By removing some of the weakest animals, you improve the species. Over-hunting is bad. Light hunting is good.

Because, at least where I live, foxes are as much a pest as hares, rabbits, moles, or mice. They are very adaptable, and have entered cities, and towns. They hunt pets (small dogs, cats), they eat livestock (rabbit, chicken...), and the overhunting of their natural predators (lynx, wolves, king owls), have gotten the fox population out of control.
Other animals are protected, small population, predators (eagles, cougars lynx, and wolves), which are much needed, and endangered.

Very gentle hunting encourages species improvement and population increase, by removing the weakest animals. Studies have shown that between deer that weren't hunted and deer that were, the deer that were hunted ended up having MORE fawns and those fawns survived better than the deer that were left alone.

Where I live, wild cats such as lynx, are critically endangered, with less than 1000 members left in the wild.
All predators are bound to hunt livestock and pets, but if we hunt them because of that, prey can become a problem afterwards to farmers.
I haven't read those studies, but they do sound interesting. I'll seek them up, thanks for the fact.

I don't have a problem with hunting per say but I don't see the reason for hunting cougars. Its not like there are so many of them that they're a problem. As far as the "harvesting" comment by Shrtfz....yeah...no. You harvest deer, elk etc because they're natural enemies or I don't know the COUGAR is so limited. Why is it limited??? Because of hunting it. So....

i understand not wanting to hunt with bait or anything i hunt to fill my freezer so i usually hunt without anything for the first month after that if my freezers not full i throw out some corn cuz then its like getting down to my food supply and i depend a great deal on deer
