If the young kids can make it in paper, it can be used as a stencil. Like all things in clay, the drying time of the slip varies depending on the environment it is in. I let the tiles get bone dry before the kids peel the paper off, this seems to work best. If they try to peel it off of damp tiles, they will end up all smeary.
Do you think you could do this lesson could be adapted to use with young kids and their moms using letters that have been punched out to reveal their names on the clay tile? How long does it take for the top slip to set up?
