Apparently an athiest thinks there is no god (different people have different defitions), so an atheist is just the opposite of an thiest.
Both words require the concept of god, I didn't say he need exist, but the concept do so, it gives both words meanings.
So why are people who dont believe in a heavenly santa clause, calling themselves athiests? You're human beings, whom are trying to understand the reality you find yourself in... No offence.
It took me a while but I did manage to free my mother and other members of my family from alot of religious bullshits. For one, they've all conceided that creationism is a car of bullshit. So it IS worth the work
LOL on the: GOD is an asshole!!! But you're right, you need to understand that all we do is starting... Starting, in case of mems, is more important then anything else!!!
these videos certainly helped me and it all started with bill maher's Religulous. the seeds of doubt were planted and i could no longer hold my Islamic beliefs
Good work, Philhellenes! The Enlightenment of the 18th Century did not come about by the single achievement of any one man but was the result of many men (and women) expressing their thoughts and opinions by applying Reason to social and scientfic issues. All grist to the mill.
Take the cigarette out of your mouth for good or else you'll find out first hand sooner than the rest of us whether or not there really is an afterlife.
As an atheist who gets extremely exhausted trying to talk to theists (some even in my own family), I find this video incredibly encouraging. I needed this to recharge...Thank you, Phil.
This is so true phil. It is not hopeless. Once I was one of the most blind and ignorant (and hateful) of Christians. One day I realized it was just that and left it behind, but not the lies of the Blood God. While wandering youtube I came across a new idea. Ideas from the Why Won't God Heal Amputees? Vids. The REAL truth is there for those able to seek it.
I can honestly say that aethiestic youtube videos helped me soo much. So many youtubers (you included phil) have helped me back up on my feet. I was reaching out and found the youtube aethiest community. If not for me not really believing in miricles thats exactly what i would be calling you guys. thank you.
Phil I check YT daily hopeing for something new fronm you. I will flog that horse til he comes back from the dead, nor do I let sleeping dogs lie. Keep up the good work and thanks for the job you do,
All it took for me was reading the Bible. I was a religious nutter on the back of surviving a terrible accident. The Bible is the best argument for atheism I've ever encountered. It's just so full of rubbish. I was studying science when I made the turn to agnosticism and finally to atheism. It was as though I had found a hidden lightswitch in my brain. It wasn't an easy transition, but I finally made it.
My experience was sort of similar to your, and no the transition from being a blind child-like follower to a critical adult thinker who is ready to seek evidence for beliefs, is not easy, Its much easier to be a blind follower.
Im glad that I am finding the road for myself to this day,
accepting that god doesn't exist (at least not the christian god) was the best gift I have ever given to myself.
Arguing with a believer is like telling a child there is no Santa Claus. It is a wish fulfilment thing even though the thing they worship is an awful monster (a bit like Santa, who gives to some but not to others).
Phil i know first hand what you mean by" im just trying to plant the sead of doubt" It was Richard that planted mine. I just started watching alot of videos and theist vs atheist debates here on youtube and.... lol well lets just say it didnt take me long to become agnostic. Then a short time latter, i was a full blown atheist. And yes alot of your videos did help by the way. ;) But i was never religious so that made it easier for me. But i just want to say thanks for you influence. Keep it up
I use the same (Christian) metaphor: planting seeds. Christians get shellacked over and over and over by atheists. That's got to have an effect. At some point, the endless ridiculous hoops jumped through, the infinite rationalizations, the repeated transitions from "I know God claims this" to "well, God just works in mysterious unknowable ways", the repeated "well, thank you for making good points, because you've actually made my faith stronger" - it's got catch up with many of them eventually.
People who seek to change other people's minds do not believe in the equality of man.
The proof?
Assuming normal mental functioning, i.e. they are not mentally disabled; an atheist and a theist have the same mental faculties. Everything from their reasoning to their logical functions is equal. Ergo, they both come to conclusions in the same way and both conclusions are based on the same level of reason and logic, only applied differently.
Men are anything but equal in their knowledge, experiences, or capacities. They're equal only regarding their natural rights, chief of which is the right to decide the important matters of life for oneself. Attempts at persuasion implicitly acknowledge that the right and freedom to change one's mind persist until the day we die. Thus persuasion respects universal equality in its only true sense.
You're conflating application of mental faculties with their overall existence, which is an equal one, assuming normal brain function. As was said in the last sentence, people's faculties are the same, only applied differently. This is not debatable, it is neurological fact. You also conflate external persuasion with self persuasion. People should not have their minds changed by others, only by themselves. Continued
Two beings of equal mental functioning of all their faculties mean that they are both able to come to conclusions in the same way. Thus it cannot therefore be proven that either has it 'wrong'. External persuasion though assumes this, without any evidence, and furthermore it assumes the ideas of the particular human being have primacy and thus must replace the ideas of another human being. This is a blatant disregard for the simple fact the minds of others have equal merit.
Atheists are wrong because they expect their existence to be proven by their own human perception. They believe that because God is "invisible" to them, He cannot exist. In fact, God is in each of us. You know it, and that's why we are debating it now. Otherwise, we would all be content and happy on our way.
too true my friend, when i get to heaven i'm going to have a swimming pool and a helicopter and a pony and a swimming pool for my pony and i will have lots of money and work in space as a cage fighter and marry a fireman...etc.
A God CAN be an asshole...I mean, a God CAN mess with you at will, at HIS will. And he has. And no Christian disputes that. God can "not be nice".
Now, having said that...
Is life just "stardust"? Is it over when you die? Is it better to treat others on your own terms? AND...most importantly, are you saying that belief in God is a self guided choice? It isn't. People who "know" do know. Athiests are self serving, and lost in a meaningless life.

All, read the history of God and man in the Bible - it says God created paradise for man and gave him free will and rules to follow for his own good. God has good will toward man ! Satan, and this fool are trying to test/trick you as he did in garden of edan causing seperation of God and man .. and the subsequent suffering. Read old and new testement and judge for yourself and see how in the end God does not require you to go to hell for sinning against him. This guy may but you dont have to.
tmm358315887744 - I AGREE! Everyone should read the Bible, from front to back, every line of it. Talking serpents, talking donkeys, animals just zapped into existence. It's a hoot! Why hasn't ANYONE proposed a 100 million dollar full CGI Hollywood production of Genesis, played absolutely straight? Would people laugh SO loud at a talking snake, or Adam talking so fast trying to name ALL the animals in ONE afternoon? I'd pay good money to see such a movie. C'mon Hollywood. Make it!

Strange. It is sufficiently scientifically proven animals verbally dilate common human language in certain areas of the world. Snakes have recently been proven to have possessed extended limbs as recorded in the holy bible. What makes a good fiction movie is evolution. The problem with science is even if you are holding dinasaur bones in your hand you can only assume the bigger picture. Poof! Magic worms coming from nothing at all, then poof! Turning to humans. And the mathmatics. No. It Does'nt.
So you think a donkey can talk? You're defending that? I know a prick when I hear one, and by prick I mean someone who KNOWS they're talking bullshit. "Verbally dilate"? Smokescreen. I don't call 500+ million years "poof", and only a fuckwit would try and pretend it was. Then another 4 billion year "poof" to Mankind. Evolution in real time would be a LONG movie. All the "magic poofing" was done in the Bible, in Genesis, and you KNOW it! And I know you know it. :)
@philhellenes Talking snake etc - Its allegory no? An early clunking attempt at bridging the intellectual divide before we had carbon dating. Surely the basic tenet is 'Love as the primary and fundamental cosmic fact' as Huxley said? Its not worth wasting your time with cultists.
Yeah, I don't believe God just damns people to Hell when He (According to the Bible.) loves everyone. Even the killers and just the horrible people. How could He? I believe that Hell can only be experienced with our time on Earth. We can make it our own Hell, but when we die, we've already gone through the all trials and tribulations we will ever have to go through, so the only thing left to embrace is peace, tranquility and love!!~^^^

After pressing a physicist for about a half hour over lunch at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratories in Batavia, IL, I got him to yell out "OK, you are right! We are searching for God". It was one of the best moments of my life.
If I'd had to put up with being badgered for half an hour while trying to enjoy my lunch, I'd be ready to say just about anything to get rid of you too.
I'm sorry I exceeded his brain's tolerance limit in a chemo-electric function you described as "enjoy". If someone is so easily "badgered" then they probably shouldn't be on a deep quest for knowledge.
Come to think of it, I should just quit all of this science hooey and just search for tasty food and sex enjoyment to please my machine. Thank you for helping me see the light.
The fact that you had to spend ten minutes in conversation 'pressing' him, as you put it, to get him to say that casts doubt that he did it for any reason other than to get you to leave him alone without being impolite and telling you to leave him alone.
Do a mental role reversal and see how you would feel about being pressured for half an hour by someone with an agenda to get you to say what they want to hear.
I suspect he was mocking you. Trouble with you people is you struggle to appreciate irony. So the moment you're celebrating is one where someone smarter than you was making fun of you.
yea,I agree, seeds,it's alot of small things that change a mind,you-tube is great as in that,if someone has doubts, they can watch the points of views of many, they may have realised were they and agreeing with them.
Just imagine. You never heard of your great g g g grandfather but you heard of a guy who lived 2000 years ago! He must have been some cool dude and done somthin crazy?
How many people will remeber the biggest rock star on this planet in 2000 years time?
Some people are completely entrenched into one way of thinking. I think they make up a small percentage, but I think there is hope for a good portion of people. Maybe I'm just too optimistic.
Its true I completly agree. There is hope for people to look outside athisim. its just being optimisic and not closing our minds to things we dont understand.
Your statement "to help me save some christians" is just plain stupid. Although I disagree with the points smaugfrost makes, at least he takes the time and effort to put forward his thoughts on his non beliefs. Not anti christian or anti specific relidgeon.
The Question is creatation & science what is the story? Nothing to do with any man made relidgion whether they are right or wrong.
Also the roots of some seeds & plants grow in many directions not just downwards & mushrooms grow upwards in the dark without light, even athist mushrooms! Think a little deeper sometimes.
You may think it is stupid, but I am actually inspired by videos like this to add more videos on youtube that promote truth and expose bullshit.. like the bible. You may be looking for answers regarding other questions you have, and I am sorry you did not find the answers you need so badly in my comment. But blasting someone for expressing inspiration to do something positive in this world is not something your imaginary, invisible friend will likely approve of.
Your right, I thought this was a discussion on athists/non athists views.
Being an athist is one thing but wanting to make and premote anti relidgious videos is a bit stupid in this day and age. I think Hiltler would have aprroved.
At the end of the day, you just might not know as much as you think!
earlofblairathol, I applaud your attempt, even with its gross failings, of trying to be rational. Comparing me, who wants to debunk religious fairy tales, to someone who would murder millions because they are different, sincerely demonstrates how much growing you need to do before attempting to enter into your next debate. I wish you the best in your studies... and please, until you can make any sense, just shut the fuck up.
"The best thing is to let Christianity die a natural death.... When understanding of the universe has become widespread... Christian doctrine will be convicted of absurdity....
"Christianity has reached the peak of absurdity.... And that's why someday its structure will collapse....
Perhaps you should have read your history first before your statement.
Im a great holy christian so I better not say things like. Your a stupid fucking dickhead who comes on talking shite hopeing to change the planet.
PS Im not a christian, just shows how you judge people and how limited your mind actualy is. I wont reply to any of your comments because I hate waisting my time on a small closed mind.
earlofblairathol, Great, I hope that means you will shut the fuck up. And, in your state of shutting the fuck up, please reflect on your actions of comparing me, someone who wants to save christians, to hitler.... you dumb fucktard.
you should shut the fuck up because you have yet to learn to be rational. You have made no single point in all of your babbling here which has been logically supported. You are pathetic. So, please, for the good of humanity, shut the fuck up.
Plus.. Godwin's Law. He immedietly forfeited when he used the Hitler comparison... which is funny seeing as Hitler supported christianity and got the go ahead by the pope of that day.
What's bad about opposing dogma anyway? All dogmatic systems including religion, have a very similar model, whether it's christianity, communism, nazism, stalinism, etc.
I think free thinkers should also emphasize this common dissent to dogma in general. Dogma requires faith and a suspension of rationality... Wee!
smaugfrost, I only want to first say, please reply openly instead of just to me. let other people judge as well what you think.
Your concept of energy, nevermind Quantum consciousness, seams very limited. all I can ask for is for you to open your mind to all things you might not fully understand yet. You cannot prove or disprove the existance of a creator/force, but then again you as a simple human cant even explain what makes a seed burried, dark, in the ground grow "upwards" as we know it!
What do you mean by "reply openly" and "not just to you". This is a public thread of comments. If I do not reply to you, the comments will bubble up to the top of the thread and have no association for people reading them.
I cannot disprove god, true. No one can.
That does not make religion true, or its claims, when they are observedly false. Many atheists reject religion on the grounds of lack of proof of its various claims to "truth".
How can a guy who's pissed as a fart, and dragging on cigs even begin to try and explain the meaning of life or relidgion to anyone?
The strange thing is, I beleive in one thing!--nothing can be created from nothing, even energy! if it can we're not even here in the first place and you not reading this.
Energy as any human brain can understand it in 2008, is well beyond our comprehensation. we can only guess about creation and make statements as how we think it.
And actually, we humans have a VERY good understanding of energy thanks! Read a science book sometime.
Kinetic, potential, thermal, gravitational, sound energy, light energy, elastic, electromagnetic, chemical, nuclear, and mass have been defined energies for some time.
no smaugfrost...earlofblairathol is talking about the building blocks of matter itself when he says energy; matter as we know it is nothing more than a stable and complexly organized state of pure energy. kinda like the way that subatomic particles are unstable, unless they form atoms, which ARE, for the most part, stable.
That does not really change anything does it? Energy is a scientific term for the potential ability to do work held by all states of matter. Period.
Semantics is not up for debate if he is arguing scientific principles.
The point is that "nothing can come from nothing" is EXACTLY the position the religions take. This argument concerning an atheists inability to explain life' meaning or purpose is a non sequitor.
Life has no meaning or purpose inately. It is self derived.
smaufrost- Energy exists in both matter and anti matter. so your statement of "held by matter.period" is not correct of even come's close.trying to understanding the concept of energy is like trying to explain to your grandfather in his day you can phone someone 6000 miles away on a small plastic thing without wires! question! do you believe you came from nothing? and it has nothing to do with relidgion whatsoever.
You initiated the statement that you do not believe energy can just come into being from nothing.
You then stated to the author of this vid: "How can a guy who's pissed as a fart, and dragging on cigs even begin to try and explain the meaning of life or relidgion to anyone?"
You then made a statement that the human mind cannot comprehend energy. I refuted that claim since we are quite capable of comprehending the SCIENCE behind energy principles.
Now you say that my understanding is limited, though you were the one to claim we were ignorant as a species on this topic.
You also state that this has "nothing to with religion". I never said it did. You stated religion initially (and meaning of life).
I'm an atheist, but I have to say I don't like your semantics. Somehow I get the feeling your promoting a new religion called atheism, "saving" people from the psychological torment of the imaginary judging god and christian hell. Don't get me wrong, advocating critical thought is great, but does the "enlightenment" you are preaching need to sound so damn divine and righteuous?
You find helping people who are reaching out for help "damn divine and righteous? I'm not allowed to show "light" at the end of a tunnel? I'm not allowed to offer any hope or encouragement?
I'm sorry, I promote the rational over the irrational. "New religion"? Are you SURE you're an atheist?
If you want to waste a way your life without saying a good thing about the truth than what is your purpose in life? You are not helping anyone, all you are doing is creating drama and confusion and that itself is a BIG sin. There are three kinds of people those following the true path, those who are in the right path, but don't do everything the way they are supposed to, and than those that are in the wrong path.
If lying is a sin in Islam, how come Islam promotes lying in the name of Islam - al takkiya. All I'm doing is telling the truth, so naturally you MUST call me a liar.
"Speaking is a means to achieve objectives...When it is possible to achieve such an aim by lying but not by telling the truth, it is permissible to lie if attaining the goal is permissible..., and obligatory to lie if the goal is obligatory." - Mohammad al-Ghazzālī (1058-1111), a respected Muslim theologian.
You want a dose of reality? Every single verse in the Quran is beautiful. Every true hadith is beautiful. Islam is beautiful but do you see it on the cover of a magazine? No, you don't. And that is the problem. You people how are not Muslims or even good Muslims value a totally different thing. This world is everything to you. People like you are emotional about all the wrong things, great liars, drama-mongering fools.
Yes I am. 'Your' God is actually Satan, the Dark One from the lowest pits of hell (who else than him, after all he's the father of all lies). Satan deceives you to make you believe he is your god -- but he's not and never will be. Satan is very devious and crafty but all you have to do is repent and accept me as your Lord and you will be forgiven.
It's funny I always hear christians saying "God is love" and then they say pleasant things like this. Shouldn't you be saying "god is sick" "god is evil" or something to that effect? Sick Christians seem to get pleasure from saying "enjoy the lake of fire" or some nonsense like that and then they wonder why atheists think they are full of shit.
"Satan deceives you to make you believe he is your god"
Well why did god create satan in the first place? God is all knowing right? God knows the future right? So god knew that satan would become a fallen angel right? God knew that satan would corrupt the human race and cause most of the human race to spend eternity in hell. Sounds like your god is a pretty sick and twisted fellow. Why would an all powerful god give two shits whether a human worshipped him or not??? He wouldn't.
The absence of Proof for God's nonexistence doesn't prove he exists. But there's enourmous amounts of proof that creationism is wrong, evolution is right, and the Bible is an innacurate, inconsistent, woefully outdated, biased, piece of ancient middle eastern propaganda, that makes no sense and says ten times as many horrific, xenophobic, medieval things as it does nice ideas about peace and forgiveness, and no one with a brain should take it seriously.
Can you disprove the existence of the invisible pink unicorn? I have some writings that Her Holy Pinkness wrote ten thousand years ago that prove that she exists and created all space and time. I can verify that they are true writings because She wrote them.
Fake Muslim WorldDominator3/MuhammadWataa threatening an 18 year old girl, BlessedMuslim: "And she's in plenty of jeopardy where she is. I will be glad to let some of my Salafi and Wahabi friends in the US have some easily gleaned public information. You forget, this is just one ID at one point and time, I have been mining this ore for a long time, and I don't mean that in the way you people would take it. Just for you, I'm going to do it. She's arrogant anyway, and Muhammad hated arrogance."
You must be REALLY special to have recieved a video response, from the Pope himself...afterall, hes blessed right? ......could we see it? Lol :) Oh.....snap...Im sure you *lost it*....:P Nevermind :) hehe! We would surely love to see it though if you wouldnt mind too terribly much? :) :P
religion is boring, the bible is boring, priests are boring,I am bored with pointless praying, humbling, blindly believing in talking donkeys, magic apples and trees, talking snakes with legs and most of all I am sick of countless unjustified and empty threats of eternal unimaginable torture from a loving psychopath beyond the clouds that I never saw, heard or touched,I am also sick of uneducated television hosts that speak for god,as if god is incompetent and can't speak for himself
Remember: God has not been proven to exist - He also hasn't been proven NOT to exist - although unfounded belief is irrational keeping an open mind to the small possibility that god exists is called being scientifically minded. PS look up Albert Einstein's beliefs about god.
"I cannot conceive of a God who rewards and punishes his creatures, or has a will of the type of which we are conscious in ourselves. An individual who should survive his physical death is also beyond my comprehension, nor do I wish it otherwise; such notions are for the fears or absurd egoism of feeble souls." -
Albert Einstein.
As for disproving an entity that can "do anything", that is IMPOSSIBLE! But, the OLD evidence for god (our existence) HAS been explained WITHOUT the need for a god.
Personnaly I think that what you're doing is liberating individuals from overly zealous denominations; however, I believe that humanity does need religious beleifs so you may want to redirect overly religious persons to milder and more modern religios denominations. PS - as an organization - the Church does do a lot of good in third world countries, so if you find your prejudices toward religion getting to you, try thinking of them as community centers that collect money for poor countries.
As a long time Christian who has only ever been to church 3 or 4 times in my entire life; I agree with your anti-church sentiments as I have recently discovered that US Evangelicals are both crazy and cult-like in their over zealous ferver. However, I find my beliefs in God only add positively to my life and help me deal with. . . whatever. . . so before you unilaterally decree - with NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE that god does not exist - you should research different churches and religions. .(cont.)

I don't know if anyone has heard but George Carlin a great groundbreaking comedian and Atheist has just died from heart failure, he was 71. In his lengthy career as a comedian, writer, and actor, George Carlin has not only made us laugh, but he made us think. I'm sure the Atheist community will miss him. As For the religious community I'm sure they will be rejoicing that another Atheist has gone to meet his just rewards. Well in the words of Gorge Carlin, You can go FUCK YOURSELF !!!
Here's an interesting question that could be the subject for your next video: Christians and people of other religions try to convert others because they believe life is more fulfilled that way and because there are eternal consequences for rejecting God. What then is your reason for convincing people, who are perfectly happy in their beliefs, there is no God?
1st, I was never raised to believe in Santa. 2nd, I used to be atheist, now am not. Your argument is that it's annoying when religious ppl try to convert others, but this guy is trying to convert ppl to HIS beliefs just the same. i respect atheists and i respect ppl of other religions, there is no need to insult others. some ppl follow religion because it helps them in life, so y try to dissuade them? if i'm wrong, what do i have to lose? if you're wrong, what do you have to lose?
no matter how much you may respect me, you still believe that I am damned by God. So with these predisposed beliefs how can you treat me or my ideas as equal?
In my experience a christians faith is so integral to their ideology that they are less able to approach a discussion accepting that they may be wrong. Perhaps this is why you read discussion as insult?
I can understand how scary it is to consider what you will lose if you are wrong.
If you would like, tell me how religion has helped you, what about it in particular makes you happy.
To answer your question; you lose your life to a delusion driven by fear. I go to hell for a lack of faith, but no matter how much I may want to believe, I still can't. so god's unjust.
(comment box to small. i think my 'latest' reply was meant to appear first?)
i guess (in my opinion/experience) there is a difference between people who want to show you what is right and must use logic to do so, and those who show you what is right because god decreed it to be thus. In the second case, the 'converter' is using a reference point within their belief system to prove their belief system. Messy.
The sect I studied did. It depends on who you're learning from. Please do some research before making such statements. All it taught me were simple solutions, absolutely nothing about any deity anywhere. That isn't to say every bhuddist is an atheist.
"ONE HEARS about God's unconditional love from fundamentalists who live in deep denial about their own intolerance, hidden anger and unfaced fears...People who live glass houses shouldn't throw scripture." (Well said! -Deepak Chopra)
Brilliant. While I have of horses sleeping standing up, I am reminded of my Grandfathers farm, and come to think of it, I have heard horses sing as well.
Keep doing what you do, and I can only hope that you continue to get 60 plus PM's with regards to your videos.
I find it odd that you say "planting seeds" though since that is often enough a Christian metaphor, but planting seeds of knowledge, reason or doubt are adequate descriptors for getting people to think critically.
Hi! Sorry, can't find my comment.. didn't realise we weren't allowed to use verses from the Actual "Word of God"!!! Silly me! Your analogy is brill, A bit like sower and the seed.. Great stuff!! Looking forward to hearing more!! x
As an atheist and former christian, I have no genuine belief in God or fear of hell. But there still is that voice inside that says "What if God really does exist and what if he really is an asshole?" What if he really is going to burn his little ants forever simply because he thinks he deserves to? Even after belief has left a person, the shadow of it remains behind like a scar.
The best government is not a theistic or atheistic one. It is one that is neutral when it comes to the supernatural. I, as an atheist would, if I was given the chance, create a government that would be virtually indistinguishable from the one outlined in the Constitution.
Men in search of power try to inject their opinions about the cosmos into whatever power structure happens to be in place. Luckily, for me, the U.S. has a secular government in which anyone is free to believe anything about the supernatural. The people you've mentioned wanted power, and some of them were atheists who wanted to push their atheism on others. Just as Saddam Hussein, Hitler and other theists wanted power. And some of these theists wanted to push their beliefs upon others.
Every video, book, movie, joke on the Simpsons, Family guy, and every conversation helps to shift that zeitgeist just a little.
Children growing up in a world where scientific ideas are discussed, and irrational dogmatism ridiculed will not be so easily swayed even by their parents to accept dated and insupportable modes of thinking. Far from hopeless, I think fighting the good fight is necessary.
ephesians, 1:17 "That the God of our Lord Jesus christ, the Father of Glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, in the knowledge of Him" dee xxx:)
"And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." (John 3:19). Come to the Light, Christ Jesus! "And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." (John 1:5)
its not pointless. allowing irationality free rane is hopeless. you and all the atheists are providing an alternative to mental servitude and stunted emotional developement for many. god bless you phill(just kidding) christopher hitchens bless you or at least include you in one of his atheist anthollogies.
as much as I disagree with everything you stand for. Its amazing how similar we are. I too couldnt give a flyin rats behind about the 99.9% of atheists who feel the need to HATE ME because I believe in God. Its the .1% who are looking for something Im aiming at. I couldnt care less what anyone else thinks about it. They arent the point, and are of zero concern to me. They are already lost.
"I too couldnt give a flyin rats behind about the 99.9% of atheists who feel the need to HATE ME because I believe in God"
Hardly any atheists hate those that believe in deities. I'm not sure where you get this idea from.
Iknow quite a few atheists and we all have family and friends that are theists. We may think your beliefs are silly but we don't hate you. I'll bet there are people whose beliefs you find silly that you don't hate.
I would get that from the numerous atheists who leave comments or email me and other Christians, calling us disgusting things, or stating how we should be eliminated, or how stupid we are for believing in a "sky daddy"
Its not silly at all. Perhaps YOU dont mistreat anyone who doesnt think as you do, but MANY MANY do.
"I would get that from the numerous atheists who leave comments or email me and other Christians, calling us disgusting things, or stating how we should be eliminated, or how stupid we are for believing in a "sky daddy"
Its not silly at all"
You can't judge by YT comments. Everyone on YT and other forums use hyperbole to make a point.
Do you really think that the people making those comments don't have good freinds and family that are theists? And love them?
you asked how I could get such an opinion. That is how. If that is not what the majority feel. If it is not the goal of atheists to eventually eliminate religion, then why doesnt these "nice atheists" never comment to those who make you all look hateful and spiteful? yanno what Im saying? I'm always correcting Christians as well as myself in these matters.
The amazing thing is that it really isn't just sixty people. It's everyone those sixty people convince, and everyone those people convince, and so on. The ripples spread far on this pond.
Religious beliefs may also spread by the same mechanism, but such absurdities require constant reinforcement. Reality is the only reinforcement that rationality requires. The truth has the long-term survival advantage.
This video was a big influence on part of my 'Street Preachers' poem, the idea that we can all say and do little things here and there and that may reach out to people in the long term. Cheers.
No offence.

Good work, Philhellenes! The Enlightenment of the 18th Century did not come about by the single achievement of any one man but was the result of many men (and women) expressing their thoughts and opinions by applying Reason to social and scientfic issues. All grist to the mill.

Blankfrack 2 years ago 26
My experience was sort of similar to your, and no the transition from being a blind child-like follower to a critical adult thinker who is ready to seek evidence for beliefs, is not easy, Its much easier to be a blind follower.
Im glad that I am finding the road for myself to this day,
accepting that god doesn't exist (at least not the christian god) was the best gift I have ever given to myself.
coolbeens21 2 years ago 2
@Blankfrack Same with me. If all the believers have read the bible, I doubt that many of them would remain faithful.

VeryEvilPettingZoo 3 years ago
People who seek to change other people's minds do not believe in the equality of man.
The proof?
Assuming normal mental functioning, i.e. they are not mentally disabled; an atheist and a theist have the same mental faculties. Everything from their reasoning to their logical functions is equal. Ergo, they both come to conclusions in the same way and both conclusions are based on the same level of reason and logic, only applied differently.
Blackfish100 3 years ago
Men are anything but equal in their knowledge, experiences, or capacities. They're equal only regarding their natural rights, chief of which is the right to decide the important matters of life for oneself. Attempts at persuasion implicitly acknowledge that the right and freedom to change one's mind persist until the day we die. Thus persuasion respects universal equality in its only true sense.
VeryEvilPettingZoo 3 years ago
You're conflating application of mental faculties with their overall existence, which is an equal one, assuming normal brain function. As was said in the last sentence, people's faculties are the same, only applied differently. This is not debatable, it is neurological fact. You also conflate external persuasion with self persuasion. People should not have their minds changed by others, only by themselves. Continued
Blackfish100 3 years ago
Two beings of equal mental functioning of all their faculties mean that they are both able to come to conclusions in the same way. Thus it cannot therefore be proven that either has it 'wrong'. External persuasion though assumes this, without any evidence, and furthermore it assumes the ideas of the particular human being have primacy and thus must replace the ideas of another human being. This is a blatant disregard for the simple fact the minds of others have equal merit.
Blackfish100 3 years ago
Atheists are wrong because they expect their existence to be proven by their own human perception. They believe that because God is "invisible" to them, He cannot exist. In fact, God is in each of us. You know it, and that's why we are debating it now. Otherwise, we would all be content and happy on our way.

No. It Does'nt.
TheTestDumies 3 years ago
So you think a donkey can talk? You're defending that? I know a prick when I hear one, and by prick I mean someone who KNOWS they're talking bullshit. "Verbally dilate"? Smokescreen. I don't call 500+ million years "poof", and only a fuckwit would try and pretend it was. Then another 4 billion year "poof" to Mankind. Evolution in real time would be a LONG movie. All the "magic poofing" was done in the Bible, in Genesis, and you KNOW it! And I know you know it. :)

The fact that you had to spend ten minutes in conversation 'pressing' him, as you put it, to get him to say that casts doubt that he did it for any reason other than to get you to leave him alone without being impolite and telling you to leave him alone.

You cannot prove or disprove the existance of a creator/force, but then again you as a simple human cant even explain what makes a seed burried, dark, in the ground grow "upwards" as we know it!
earlofblairathol 3 years ago
What do you mean by "reply openly" and "not just to you". This is a public thread of comments. If I do not reply to you, the comments will bubble up to the top of the thread and have no association for people reading them.
I cannot disprove god, true. No one can.
That does not make religion true, or its claims, when they are observedly false. Many atheists reject religion on the grounds of lack of proof of its various claims to "truth".
This is an intellectually honest position.
smaugfrost 3 years ago 3
Now you state that we cannot explain why seeds grow "upwards" from underground.
Seeds grow upwards due to the effect of gravity on them. They extrude a root downwards and then the plant grows upwards.
Plants grow towards light through
"phototropism" which is a process benefitted by photosensitive receptors in the plant and facilitated by the plant hormone, "auxin".
This is what science is all about; continud research of, experiments on, and explanations for "observed" phenomena.
smaugfrost 3 years ago 3
How can a guy who's pissed as a fart, and dragging on cigs even begin to try and explain the meaning of life or relidgion to anyone?
The strange thing is, I beleive in one thing!--nothing can be created from nothing, even energy! if it can we're not even here in the first place and you not reading this.
Energy as any human brain can understand it in 2008, is well beyond our comprehensation. we can only guess about creation and make statements as how we think it.
earlofblairathol 3 years ago
haha, so smoking a cigarette is a sign of ignorance? my best friend in high school smoked cigarettes since she was 16 and got a 33 on her ACTs..hmm.
nneverwhisperr 3 years ago
"nothing can be created from nothing"
Then you CANNOT be a theist can you?
"...and God created the earth from nothing..."
And actually, we humans have a VERY good understanding of energy thanks! Read a science book sometime.
Kinetic, potential, thermal, gravitational, sound energy, light energy, elastic, electromagnetic, chemical, nuclear, and mass have been defined energies for some time.
I am surprised you missed all of it.
smaugfrost 3 years ago 2
no smaugfrost...earlofblairathol is talking about the building blocks of matter itself when he says energy; matter as we know it is nothing more than a stable and complexly organized state of pure energy. kinda like the way that subatomic particles are unstable, unless they form atoms, which ARE, for the most part, stable.
kaishininjou 3 years ago
That does not really change anything does it? Energy is a scientific term for the potential ability to do work held by all states of matter. Period.
Semantics is not up for debate if he is arguing scientific principles.
The point is that "nothing can come from nothing" is EXACTLY the position the religions take. This argument concerning an atheists inability to explain life' meaning or purpose is a non sequitor.
Life has no meaning or purpose inately. It is self derived.
smaugfrost 3 years ago
smaufrost- Energy exists in both matter and anti matter. so your statement of "held by matter.period" is not correct of even come's close.trying to understanding the concept of energy is like trying to explain to your grandfather in his day you can phone someone 6000 miles away on a small plastic thing without wires! question! do you believe you came from nothing? and it has nothing to do with relidgion whatsoever.
earlofblairathol 3 years ago
You initiated the statement that you do not believe energy can just come into being from nothing.
You then stated to the author of this vid: "How can a guy who's pissed as a fart, and dragging on cigs even begin to try and explain the meaning of life or relidgion to anyone?"
smaugfrost 3 years ago
You then made a statement that the human mind cannot comprehend energy. I refuted that claim since we are quite capable of comprehending the SCIENCE behind energy principles.
Now you say that my understanding is limited, though you were the one to claim we were ignorant as a species on this topic.
You also state that this has "nothing to with religion". I never said it did. You stated religion initially (and meaning of life).

Juniper677 3 years ago
If lying is a sin in Islam, how come Islam promotes lying in the name of Islam - al takkiya. All I'm doing is telling the truth, so naturally you MUST call me a liar.
"Speaking is a means to achieve objectives...When it is possible to achieve such an aim by lying but not by telling the truth, it is permissible to lie if attaining the goal is permissible..., and obligatory to lie if the goal is obligatory." - Mohammad al-Ghazzālī (1058-1111), a respected Muslim theologian.

He wouldn't.
danielabq22 3 years ago 2
The absence of Proof for God's nonexistence doesn't prove he exists. But there's enourmous amounts of proof that creationism is wrong, evolution is right, and the Bible is an innacurate, inconsistent, woefully outdated, biased, piece of ancient middle eastern propaganda, that makes no sense and says ten times as many horrific, xenophobic, medieval things as it does nice ideas about peace and forgiveness, and no one with a brain should take it seriously.

religion is boring, the bible is boring, priests are boring,I am bored with pointless praying, humbling, blindly believing in talking donkeys, magic apples and trees, talking snakes with legs and most of all I am sick of countless unjustified and empty threats of eternal unimaginable torture from a loving psychopath beyond the clouds that I never saw, heard or touched,I am also sick of uneducated television hosts that speak for god,as if god is incompetent and can't speak for himself

Remember: God has not been proven to exist - He also hasn't been proven NOT to exist - although unfounded belief is irrational keeping an open mind to the small possibility that god exists is called being scientifically minded. PS look up Albert Einstein's beliefs about god.
tidbit1000 3 years ago
"I cannot conceive of a God who rewards and punishes his creatures, or has a will of the type of which we are conscious in ourselves. An individual who should survive his physical death is also beyond my comprehension, nor do I wish it otherwise; such notions are for the fears or absurd egoism of feeble souls." -
Albert Einstein.
As for disproving an entity that can "do anything", that is IMPOSSIBLE! But, the OLD evidence for god (our existence) HAS been explained WITHOUT the need for a god.
philhellenes 3 years ago

However, I find my beliefs in God only add positively to my life and help me deal with. . . whatever. . . so before you unilaterally decree - with NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE that god does not exist - you should research different churches and religions. .(cont.)

Excellent video.
I know what you mean about planting little seeds.
De-conversions are rare but not impossible.
I have sown a few seeds myself.

What then is your reason for convincing people, who are perfectly happy in their beliefs, there is no God?
lehleh85 3 years ago
it's when they try and convert others that it gets messy.
but that aside, when you found out that santa wasn't real i bet there was the initial shock of the bubble being burst.
but how could you blame the deliverer of the news? it's just the way it is, they didn't make the truth. they just discovered it using logic.
jfedjrock 3 years ago
1st, I was never raised to believe in Santa. 2nd, I used to be atheist, now am not. Your argument is that it's annoying when religious ppl try to convert others, but this guy is trying to convert ppl to HIS beliefs just the same. i respect atheists and i respect ppl of other religions, there is no need to insult others. some ppl follow religion because it helps them in life, so y try to dissuade them? if i'm wrong, what do i have to lose? if you're wrong, what do you have to lose?
lehleh85 3 years ago
no matter how much you may respect me, you still believe that I am damned by God. So with these predisposed beliefs how can you treat me or my ideas as equal?
In my experience a christians faith is so integral to their ideology that they are less able to approach a discussion accepting that they may be wrong. Perhaps this is why you read discussion as insult?
I can understand how scary it is to consider what you will lose if you are wrong.
jfedjrock 3 years ago
If you would like, tell me how religion has helped you, what about it in particular makes you happy.
To answer your question; you lose your life to a delusion driven by fear. I go to hell for a lack of faith, but no matter how much I may want to believe, I still can't. so god's unjust.
(comment box to small. i think my 'latest' reply was meant to appear first?)
jfedjrock 3 years ago
Thanks for an intelligent reply ☺
i guess (in my opinion/experience) there is a difference between people who want to show you what is right and must use logic to do so, and those who show you what is right because god decreed it to be thus.

Thank you.

I, as an atheist would, if I was given the chance, create a government that would be virtually indistinguishable from the one outlined in the Constitution.
cockTHEgun 3 years ago
Men in search of power try to inject their opinions about the cosmos into whatever power structure happens to be in place. Luckily, for me, the U.S. has a secular government in which anyone is free to believe anything about the supernatural. The people you've mentioned wanted power, and some of them were atheists who wanted to push their atheism on others. Just as Saddam Hussein, Hitler and other theists wanted power. And some of these theists wanted to push their beliefs upon others.

Phil, you make me want to convert (but reach out) just so that I can be deconverted by you!
A good line from a film for you that is of some relevance, I think you will recognise it:
'Without change, something sleeps inside us and seldom awakens. The Sleeper will awaken'. :D

We are not at liberty to create just any god that suites us.
That's called idolatry.
You have created an imaginary God that does not exist.
God, the creator of the universe, does in fact have a book.
The Bible is the authoritative, infallible, inerrant, word of the living God.
Other religions are counterfeit religions by satan to draw people from the truth of scripture.
Hell exists. Jesus is the ONLY way, for all have sinned. "Repent, the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Good vid, Phil.

as much as I disagree with everything you stand for.

I'll bet there are people whose beliefs you find silly that you don't hate.
pandstar 3 years ago
I would get that from the numerous atheists who leave comments or email me and other Christians, calling us disgusting things, or stating how we should be eliminated, or how stupid we are for believing in a "sky daddy"
Its not silly at all. Perhaps YOU dont mistreat anyone who doesnt think as you do, but MANY MANY do.

You can't judge by YT comments. Everyone on YT and other forums use hyperbole to make a point.
Do you really think that the people making those comments don't have good freinds and family that are theists? And love them?
pandstar 3 years ago
you asked how I could get such an opinion.
