Zappa was raised in a military environment for most of his early life, his father was in fact a chemist at Edgewood arsenal. Dave McGowan in his 'Laurel Canyon' series exposes brilliantly how practically all of the biggest names in the music industry during the mid 60's to late 70's all had military/CIA intelligence connections and how many of the movements of this time were blatantly manufactured. Zappa was definitely in a very good position to know what was in the works for America.

Normally I agree with much of what Frank said....but on this occaision, he's talking through his arse. Zappa was a great musician and satirist, not a biologist.
AIDS has been known about in non-human primates for more than a century, and has been observed in Africa among humans since the 1920s, decades before Crick and Watson discovered the double-helix structure of DNA, and long before genetic engineering becam a possibility. The first recorded deaths from AIDS occured in the 1950s. But hey, don't let reality cloud your judgement.

3. Read "The White Plague" by Frank Herbert for another informed take on the subject of designer bioweapons. This other Frank wasn't a drug user either.
I'll check my copy of The Real Frank Zappa book. He might have not even tried LSD, but I'm sure he said he tried weed and hated it. I'm also sure he was against the use of both drugs.
