  • super split wood splitters are the best

  • It's all the same, work is work. Use the maul to get the exercise.

  • Very informative.

  • Why didn't you review an electrical hydraulic splitter? My dad has a 4 ton one, and it's surprisingly effective.

  • @Mjarf88 Because they didn't send one to test.

  • @Mjarf88

How well does it do with large logs? I've been thinking about buying an electric one because I don't do that much splitting so I don't want another gas engine tool sitting around to have to worry about gas going bad in, or trying to maintain.

  • I just purchased the 27 ton Craftsman splitter. Still waiting on it to come to the Sears were I ordered it. I have a Jotul 400 wood stove. I heat my home with only wood. It's a huge labor intensive process. After this first year, it was obvious that a gas powered splitter would make the job a whole lot easier! Thanks Tim for taking the time to show this splitter in action.

  • i never liked log spliters theyre slow i could use a maul and be done a long time before if i was using a spliter

  • thank you man for good video

  • dude the way you handle the mean or obscene comments is excellent , the way you word your retorts is completely awesome you should consider teaching a debate class, if you do sign me up because I've never seen a you-tuber handle nasty comments so intelligently and efficiently before your great (great vids

    )

  • @JDLOCKON Thanks for your kind comment. I'm just following the Comment Policy on the front page of my channel. It's really easy. Just keep in mind the old saying: "Actions speak louder than words."

You see, it's easy to type a comment. It can be done in seconds. But it takes time and effort to tape a video. What's more, on a video, you and everyone else can see if the person really knows what their talking about. That's why you never see those making bad comments come back with a video.

  • @AsktheBuilder thanks for the reply on my comment it meant a lot, I was wandering I've been wanting to make a cobble stone walk way but I've always liked shaping the stones myself from easy to find natural sources in my area (I fairly enjoy working with stone), my question being this do you know of a good hammer or tool for doing this

  • i built a prototype log splitter...I put my fat 500 pound wife on a seat i mounted to an old basketball pole and underneath i welded a strong maul. Its on a remote contol garage door opener. I get to set back drink a beer or two and push the remote.

  • @TheClownCentral Thanks for your comment. I'm sure that women who visit this channel will most probably tell you what they think of your invention. My guess is that some of their comments I may have to delete because of language that will undoubtedly cross the line.

  • I have always enjoyed splitting wood, it was enjoyable work. For someone older, and those knoty logs, some assitance doesn't hurt, like a log splitter. They do however cost 1,000 of dollars, I seen some to day, for $1299.00, the more expensive were $1699.00. It depends on how often you split wood, if the investment is necessary. I would say someone 23, could split wood quite quickly, I have split alot in a few hrs, a F250 truck load, that isn't including stacking. Red Oak..with maul.

  • My great grandfather was a logger. He said that they had worked so hard that they would never gain any weight.....He also lived to be 101 years old! Doing it by hand is a great workout

  • If you need the wood for your second cabin; do it manually. Why? Because your most likely a "dough boy", and need the exercise.

  • Nice video, thanks. Here in the Phoenix, AZ area we had massive wind storms that brought down alot of mature pine and mesquite trees. I got perhaps 5 cords of great log wood, for free. Bought a maul, and wedge, and it looks like the green stuff doesn't want to split. I'll be renting a log splitter soon!

  • great video. in response to those who think they can split better with a maul than a log splitter, if I was using this guys dried up seasoned wood, i would say yep. but no way can you split notted up maple, douglas fir that is wet and sappy or some nasty black walnut. your wedge gets stuck in the first 3 inches of the log and then you end up pounding it with another maul and this goes on and on for hours just trying to split up one round. dried up lincoln logs are no test.

  • what type of maul is that

what brand and where can you get one

  • when you want to split wood with this handsplitter you need 8 weeks for the wood and per hand you need2 hours!!

  • Great video! I'm thinking about getting a woodsplitter , I'm only 15 but I really need this for my family and definitely for the future. Could you tell me the durability of the heavy duty woodsplitter. I'm thinking of either a vermeer or a craftsman. Thanks!

  • I can split fairly fast with an axe, maul and sledge and wedges, but for splitting several cord of wood in a weekend, you can't beat using a splitter. That and extra hands make it way more efficient.

  • You're 150% correct. A maul is faster for small amounts. We humans get tired. The machine just keeps going full tilt as long as you feed it gas and oil.

  • very well I understand! I split right after I buck the tree up in the woods so its easier and less of a hassle to bring a maul. but after a hour of good hard splitting I start to tire!

  • I agree that a maul on clear wood is so much faster. You can pop links into quarters with ease. But our bodies tire, as you say, and the machines just keep on going.

  • ask the builder.... I have a comment that I hope you don't dismiss as a joke. I am 23 and I can beat a hydraulic splitter with my maul. your video says otherwise. I love my maul. Fast and easy for me

  • I don't doubt it in the short haul. But the splitter never tires. The splitter can easily split pieces where your maul either bounces off or buries itself. Over an eight-hour period, I guarantee you the splitter will split more wood. After several hours of you swinging your maul, your arms will be noodles. :->>>

  • @AsktheBuilder Not only that, some types of wood you simply can't split with a maul. I'm 21 and in good shape, but woods like Elm!) are pretty much impossible to split by hand.

  • @bmilla35 yeah or you end up burying wedges to try to split it

  • Nice video very informitive.

A few tips for beginners if you split wood with a maul. Don't attack a large dia piece of wood right in the center start on the edges and work your way around the piece. Look at the wood use the checks (the cracks in the heart of the wood) to your advantage. On knotty wood or wyes cut them in shorter lengths and chunk them up let the saw do the work. The chunks don't stack well so I put them on top of the wood stack. I hope this helps someone.

  • good to see someone who knows what their doing

  • I'd like to see the Super Split that was mentioned by lumberjak1984 thrown into your next video review of log splitters -- much faster than the hydraulic.

  • Comment removed

  • We can see that. It left you very foggy with the inability to communicate well.

  • we have a screw log splitter that runs on a pto.

  • my splitter works great-- I have a few videos on my channel

  • that thing is not economic at all.... first you waste money on buying or renting then on gasoline to power it and in the end you loose a lot of time....

id let you chop off my legs if i wouldn't be a lot faster with one spit in my hands and a good axe

  • You miss the point entirely. Many might not have the stamina and skills you have with an axe. What should they do? Sure, get them...... I'd love to have you here with your axe and I'll give you a link with a wye in it. Let's see who can split that bad boy.

  • sure it would take some time from me but still its not that every log has wye, knot or something like that... i didn't mean to devalue it i just sad my mind.

  • That's fine to speak your mind. I just ask that you think of the possibilities. You seemed to bad mouth the device.

  • i would like to see you split logs like that machine. Really i would

My Grandpa has one similar to this and i tell you it is wonderful!

  • yes you would be faster, if the log was "perfect" and faster cutting one log, but what about after 12m2 of wood

  • i would rather use my axe then spend a couple grand on a log splitter, but then again, im young

  • Good point. These splitters work great on logs that have forks, knots and other things that inhibit clean splits with a maul. Remember this as well: Your rotator cuff can only take so many rotations before it wears out. Think about when you want it to fail.

  • The hydraulic Log splitter is good but for people doing multiple logs they should make a model where you can like up about 10 different logs in oene time with 10 pistons for each connected to the main pulley then in one go all 10 logs split. Bingo

  • steel toe boots are a must when using one of these with heave logs, especially with the ones that make you stand next to the rail to operate, when those two halves fall off they hit the ground, or your foot hard

  • on average whats the rental rate on a log splitter?

  • You simply call places or visit websites. Start looking at ads you see on the Internet. You may see an ad that has rates in it.

  • in my town its about 60 dollars for a whole day

  • And in a whole day if you and your family/friends can make alot of wood with that device!

  • i got the same troy built log splitter, but im interested in the super splitter....its a must see. muuuuuuuuuuuuuch quicker

  • takes a while

  • what about a chainsaw?

  • a chainsaw will end up wasting alot of wood simply by the way they cut, its not practical to use a saw to split wood

  • I believe the axe you are wielding in the beginning of the vid is indeed a splitting axe, and not a maul. I purchased a maul today (I am very exited about it), and a maul is an axe on one side, and a sledge on the other side, and weighs about 8 pounds. I saw the axe you are holding at Lowes today too, and it's about 4 pounds.

  • You may be correct. It does split wood, but the machines are less wear and tear on my bones. :->

  • these tools are slow, u can build one thats faster by urself in ur own garage, if have the right tools for it ofcourse, and some knowledge and free time....

  • Thanks for your comment, but seriously, what percentage of the general population meets those requirements? 0.10% ???

  • yea its a complicated project tho

  • i would have to dissagre with him on bing the fact the a gas one is the fastes a flywheel one would kill it in a race. if you are splitting green would below 0 a ax or mall will out split it on softwoods as well

  • Nice videos, and I can tell that you take a lot of your time and effort to meke them. My favorite part is that little high definition button. Keep up the good work, and I am looking forward to watch some of your new videos!

  • good video! nice editing

  • i am 12 years old and i got a 30 ton hydrolic wood splitter lol

  • i love using the malt but im 14 so im still young

  • Try typing when you're not so tired. I'd love to see how a chocolate malt can split an oak log. :->

  • I like your videos. These are very helpful tips.

I'm only 12 years old but this is very interesting. Good job.

  • I know you wont post this comment either but you shouldnt tell people about using a splitting maul. I have split more wood that the small so called ten ton splitter wouldnt be able to touch.

I have lived in Northern MN my entire life and have dealt with wood heating for many years.

I used to sell firewood also and we had a splitter that my dad and I built with a thirty ton push.

I still use an 8# splitting maul and have split many seasons of cord wood with this tool. Way more than you will

  • You miss the point. You were commenting on the Manual Log Splitter video of mine. When people read your comments there, they'll understand....

  • I agree, the maul is the way to go.

  • ahh the the multiple uses of hydrualic technology

  • I think another notable con to the last log splitter is the amount of storage space needed.

  • My former neighbour has a really big splitter that connects to his tractor. He'd simply drive out into the forest, lower his 4-point hitch and start splitting wood.

  • Good informative Video Tim! Where I live, we probably won't be doing any log splitting but this is really good for people that do!

  • Once again, great video Tim

  • yet again another crackin vid from ask the builder
