THAT'S why pilots kick ass! That's gotta be a nail biter for the crew. Passengers usually can't even tell it's happening, except for the hard touchdown. Been in a few. Cool to see the wings flex.
Why not make pivoting landing gear that turn in the direction of the runway a standard safety feature? Its old technology, I recall seeing it on the B-52's, it may be even older than that, I cant imagine this is not a risk to the tyres blowing out, maybe not the first time but repetitive cross wind landings and overlooked "cost effective" maintenance its bound to be common.
The first clip, he never landed. That was taken at Ontario International. He tried twice to land there in the notorious Santa Anas. After two failed attempts he said screw it and went to LAX.
@livegoodwin yea that would make sence...seems like though someone would had noticed that before it took off and say hey someone get that off. Doubt it would hurt anything but lets not take the chance...lol
@collinsworth1982 - This is a test flight for aircraft certification. They are testing the "side loading" capabilities of the plane. Notice how the pilot lands sideways (on purpose). The thing on the tail is a small chute on a rope to show the angle between the relative wind and the aircraft
Has anyone ever flew into Detroit City Airport (KDET)? That was always a crosswind landing, and extreme! The runway is barely long enough for a 737 (5k ft, or so) One time I was sitting by a window over a wing and as we were landing, we were so sideways that I could look down the center of the runway from my seat! Now THAT"S crosswind buddy. I don't think they have jet service to KDET anymore, but it was always interesting!
@sunlogosis Thanks, me too! On the return trip, when we were decending into Indy, the pilot came on and said that the nose gear locked light was not illuminating, and we were going to fly by the tower so they could look at the nose gear with binoclulars and verify it was down. It was, and we landed ok. But talk about a rough couple of flights!
@sunlogosis Oh, it doesn't end there. I have the worst luck when traveling by air. I was on a small commuter flight three years ago. The elderly lady next to me was asleep (I thought) when I began to smell something aweful. Well, when you pass away, I guess your muscles down below relax, and things, uhh...free-flow. I got up and informed the flight crew (no attendant) and had to sit next to a dead woman with full shorts until we landed. I was woozey as hell when I got off the plane.
being a son of a pilot and a musician myself....well...this video was like ectasy for me !! i get your 303 in your nickname (roland tb303???). nice vid, nice music! p.s.: the one on 3:27 was an aborted take off wasn'it?
as an aviation fanatic i have ofcourse seen a lot of these vids already so the video itself was good but not so special but.....DUUDDEE! Your music is fucking amazing!! So that really made this vid fantastic!
Not to f with your jello but it's "PLANE" not "plain" and the rest of your post is dumber than a box of rocks. Have a day and "know" you are not in the top of the gene pool.
@Lisztman88 OOOOOOHHHHH Bad arse pilots! Even Bad ass pilots. Badass pilots - I thought he was talking about some country! Badass, hmm where is that???
that was awesome. i've flown countless times as a passenger but in all that time only seen a few landings from the outside... had no idea people could even do that!
crosswind landings keep the fun in flying the aircraft. Most of today's tradition aircraft do everything for you except land and of course the airlines have taken care of some of that with the right conditions. You want to put some pucker factor back in the seat, try a final with a 12 knot crosswind at 45 degrees to the runway. If your butt doesn't eat some of the seat, then you are a Zombie.
@WCGwkf , good point... But with the energy one of those burns on a single take-off an albatross could fly around the Earth from now to the end of times. And now that I think of it... Destroying stuff on impact might not be that much of a "pro", don't you think?
@Virakotxa yeh but theyre not packed with 57000 gallons of kerosene and 60 innocent lives and plus there too dumb to care about there or anybody elses life....something like this would put a lot of stress, preassure and panic on a pilot...thats where the kudos goes!!!
@Dubbed2Death , yeah... They'd just perch to a different tree without much stress. Some, packing eggs... or with little ones waiting at the nest. KUDOS to all who fly and/or play drums.
@tlcooper93 Can't talk for both without further examination... You could be an uncommonly talented seagull with too much access to internet... But I'm sure we're not plains. No plain has ever been gifted enough to type Youtube responses...
@tlcooper93 Both have to do with flatness... But yeah, you got me. That's what you get for teaching impertinent seagulls English... Mind that you don't lavish your gifts upon the ungrateful. I'm at a higher plane as to explain this subjects to a plain bird.
@brunstad , No, but it's outstanding what a well placed bird can do to a 100 tons of steel when they move too fast into each other... K, it often ends on just a splat, but you won't see too birds crashing into each other on mid air... that is because they do have some real maneuverability.
@Virakotxa Yeah, but the fucking bird doesn't do it with something that weighs as much as your house with 100 people (including your mother, wife and daughter) onboard!
@spahjrp I'd be scared if the plain assigns me a wife and daughter... But wouldn't be needed... because if a plain had the mad-building skills of a bird it could build itself a new house wherever it went using available resources. And often do so carrying a city-sized population of tics, fleas and other parasites... with siblings. As it stands, you have to feed your plain with massive amounts of fossil food you can't grow, and titan-sized infrastructures so it can even land.
@Virakotxa birds use a completely different method of flight though they still have wings, they are more comparable to rotary aircraft. (not in gliding but in propulsion.)
with planes this big the landing gear is actually directed towards the runway while the aircraft is crabbing down to the runway so the passengers can stay comfortable instead of side slipping down.
Cool and interesting video, although I do have a different opinion. The video should be called the worst crosswind landings ever caught on video. A good pilot makes a crosswind landing look like a normal landing and does not slam the plane on the ground sideways.
THAT'S why pilots kick ass! That's gotta be a nail biter for the crew. Passengers usually can't even tell it's happening, except for the hard touchdown. Been in a few. Cool to see the wings flex.
Keep hands ready for full throttle!
