Love your attention to detail. Seat hinges and seat bases look great. Bumper bar irons came out well, what is that type of plating called?Just needs some chrome dress rims. I have 2 HQ 4 door Monaro's i'm slowly doing up.
MrHQGts, you have done a wonderful job restoring this car back to its original glory, but better, it is a real shame when people bastardise these cars, good onya mate, a job very well done, I hope you have many years of enjoyment!!
mate i dream of doing what you have done. the only way im ever getting a car like that is by winning lotto. or ditching the family and selling everything i have hahaha. good on ya mate, great vid.
I've done this rebuild myself on a 72 HQ and looking for another. Awesome work mate. The only true Aussie sports car and you did it justice. Great vid and great music.
Now thats well done! Mainly the car, but well done on your video too. I've rebuilt several holdens from scratch like that so I know what it takes out of you to do it... wicked work my friend, Very impressed!!
congratulations on a job well done, mate you have not spared a cent, this has got to be the finest example of a restoration of an icon, I am so glad you did got rid of those crappy wheels and fitted the Monaro wheels, what is it, that everyone sticks those crappy chrome plate and/or alloy speedy wheels onto these cars, they do not do the car justice!!
If you could see past your bong, you would realise there is more countries with RHD then you think. RHD is no different to LHD, appart from the obvious.
yes , true , dont mean to be a downer , ive a ht prem in the shed awaiting , its just time and experience that tells me how many hundreds of hours and bucks its gonna take to do the job right . i had to sell my hq coupe about 5 yr ago , i wish i could get her back
fantastic! great to see you spend time and effort on an old car. even though the car is not even a little bit collestable and as slow as a hilux ute. poor misguided soul.
Seriously Beautiful car! cant wait to start restoring my HZ it wont look as well done as this HQ il still love my car!! Fantastic job on the monaro!! oh yea AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!!!
wow! great build! inspires me more to work harder on my so called 18th month build. My baby is a hq statesman ute 78'. Complete rebuild like this awesome guy. Mate your a legend!! We shall go for a city cruise once i get my p's.
@obxjeepguy I know there's a handful of specialist importers in America. As an Australian, I find it amusing when I see a Holden overseas that isn't wearing a different GM badge. It may take some research, but they do exist out there. Getting a coupe will be expensive, as they were rare. Getting a sedan isn't so hard. They have a huge engine bay, so if the original 308 5-litre isn't enough, a 350 or 454 will fit fine
@Mechknight73 Yes. I am aware of an importer in Oregon who brings these cars in. It is just dreadfully expensive. The 308 would be fine for me. As a matter of fact, I would restore it to original specs. I would get more looks driving this car than in any Ferrari, or anything of that sort. Here in the US, we can leave them right hand drive because they don't care. There are tons of RHD cars here in the states.
@obxjeepguy If you wanted to do it cheaply, you could start with a base model Kingswood (The base model 4 door sedan version of this one) and build it up. The 308s used Turbo 350 and Turbo 400 transmissions, a Chevy 10 bolt is easy to fit, and they will take any GM V8 you care to fit to them. The smallest engine the HQ ever came with was a 173 cubic inch straight 6. A good one retails for about $3000, or about $2700 in US currency
@missjo69 They were Australian designed and built, for Australian conditions. Coupes are rare in Australia, and this one was no exception. Holden took the idea of a muscle car and hardened it up. The only oval track racing in Australia id dirt track speedway. Almost all blacktop racing is done on circuits here. For a classic example, search for "Bathurst 1972" this was the era this car came from
Beautiful work, beautiful car. Would have been nice to see the video end with the sound of the car but I found the one where you started her up, outstanding. If you ever decide to do another one I'd volunteer freely just so I knew what I was doing when I get around to doing one myself.
@sim077 That would depend on how much of the work you can do yourself, and if you have any mates to back you up on the stuff you can't do. A Monaro rarely changes hands unrestored for less than $3000, unless it's a really crap one. Engine, $1000-1500 in parts, plus machining and assembly. Transmission $500- however far. Paint; DIY $500, pay someone else is dependent on quality
@sim077 Upholstery; Depends on materials, but can vary from $1000 to however far you want to go, and who does it. You can ask Rare Spares for a price list as well. I have seen rebuilds like this vary from $10,000 (assuming he's a jack of all trades) through to show winners that cost $100,000+ to finish
G'day, been following your progress on oldholden and I must say "I love your work". Couple of quick questions. I noticed your Munaro has no heaters, How do you get on in the winter? Cold? Foggy windows? (or just don't take it out?) Will you be fitting wheel arch trims, the sill trims and mud flaps? (I wish I'd fitted them to my HQ... after a few weeks I had a few paint chips appear) Could have had something to do with the way I drove it though!
@karamuakadventure All they have in common with American engineering is a few parts and some styling cues. Compared to American muscle cars, they have been known to outhandle outbrake and outrun them. Ricers can't withstand the kind of abuse these cars would laugh at
@98Superbike You can, but the modern ones wear Pontiac or Chevrolet badges in America. As for the classics, I suggest you google for importers. This model will take a 454 with few modifications, although ask for Holden's injected 308. a 5-litre engine, weighs 90 pounds less than a Chevy smallblock, and puts out 230 horsepower BEFORE you modify it.
you have done a fantastic restoration job, it is nice to see the car has not been spoilt with ridiculous mods, well done!
