Its collective, you don't lose your old EDGE signal, you just have the 3G signal ON TOP, you could have 1 bar 3G but 5 bar EDGE, Apple don't need to show you EDGE if you've got 3g at all.

This totally worked for me!! I had trouble connecting and my phone dropped calls all the time. As soon as I turned off 3G I got full bars and could receive calls in my apartment surrounded by steel and concrete. I even have half decent data speeds. Thanks dude!!

The EDGE is on 850mhz which is a more powerful signal than 3G which is on 1900mhz so it does work but you get slow internet

Quite a small difference... It's just because Edge coverage is much higher than 3G coverage. Edge is fine unless you need to use data because it's almost as slow as dial-up.

it works sometimes in some situations. The reason is, because there are still old towers with 2g coverage. If you keep 3g enabled your phone will always connect to a 3g tower that is further away from you and only gives u 2 or 3 bars rather than a 2g tower that can give u full bars.

@HarryJones95 3g is about internet speed not call quality. If you are at home and you have a bad signal you don't need 3g enabled because wifi is 20 times faster (well it depends on your internet. in my case, it is) than with 3g on. Plus you don't use any data. In certain cases, disabling 3g is better. In others, not so good. It all depends on circumstances.

now why would have aiphone 4 and not use 3g cuz i have not had one issue
