Well, I don't generally read for pressure, but I was in a book store and started reading it. I really liked it, bought it, and loved it. My only issue: why is actually called City of Thieves.
i was doing an assignment for my english class and my teacher recommended that i read this book for it and i can say that im glad i have had a chance to read it! best book without a doubt i LOVE it and i hope they make a movie out of it. i have a friend that is russian and an exact copy of Kolya which made it even more significant for me when i was reading it! david benioff did an amazing job cant wait to read his next book <3 xo
I love Kolya, I cried so much at his death. I couldn't finish the last pages cause it was so cruel, the war was so cruel, as are wars themselves, I cried so much, I think I've never cried so much for somebody before in my life, I know Kolya is just a fictional character but he's so noble, beautiful and my inspiration.
I love you David Benioff for writing this book, you are a hero.
Why would you put that up there? I've never read the book, and was just getting interested, and now know the fate of at least one major character. Thanks.
In the Acknowledgments part of the book the author thanks Harrison Salisbury and Curzio Malaparte and wrote: "If I got the details right, they deserve much of the credit". Sorry, David, you got so many details wrong ! Hundreds of them. Starting with Russian names, toponymy, proverbs and finishing, this is most unfortunate, historical facts. May be it's OK with your young English-speaking readers, but for people, who know Russian culture and History your novel is just pathetic.
@azohunvey Unless I'm mistaken, I highly doubt you were there to see the siege of Leningrad as much as David has. And the story isn't specifically focusing on the course through history that the city undertook, but the fictional (emphasis on fictional) out take on two boys growing into men through a hell of a time in a war-torn age. If you don't appreciate the novel, fine. And besides, even the author wasn't sure of his details!
Anyways, I find this book amazing, and hope to read more!!
@Arse7assassin You are mistaken. I was born in Leningrad in 1939 and know about the siege a lot more than David does. And unlike most of "commentators" here, this is not the first book I've read. There are many good books about this period, fiction and non-fiction. If you read Russian, I can recommend some for you.You like David's book - good for you. But please, take it with a grain of salt, would you ?
@azohunvey I had no idea. As a matter of fact, I knew very little about the siege of Leningrad, and after reading this book, I was content with the story, but of course, I also sought to finding out more about the historic event. If I offended you, then sorry about that. And I'm quite curious to read more about this city and its stories.
@azohunvey I'd love to hear your take on the book and your reasons for suggesting that it be taken with a grain of salt. There's nothing like an assessment from someone who lived the real thing.
I seriously fall asleep while reading every book ever. I'm a really slow reader, too.. Usually takes me 30 minutes and sometimes more to read 10 pages. This is definitely the best book I've read. It actually kept me awake at night instead of putting me to sleep! It was amazing, and it help my attention the entire time. I told all my friends and family about it.
I does indeed dissapoint me that an inspirational writer gets continuously shit upon people like you for a few minor fabrications. Regardless, he's still one of the most inspirational writers of my time.
