pros may have a dispute over "slightly changes over nuances, and expressions" and such...i for my part was blown away by the presence of her voice and singing :-)
This is such a mess. It seems like she's only focusing on making it melodically interesting for a "jazz audience", instead she completely ignores the beautiful lyrics and it becomes boring and not dynamic at all. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best thing - proven by the beautiful recording on the album..
this was recorded at "A tribute to Leonard Cohen". It's one of the most wonderful interpretations, it's for eternity and will make her one of the most famous female jazz-singers. If you know life, and love ... and dead, you will understand ...
Damn! It's like this song was written for her. Did yall know that Leonard Cohen wrote this on the ideas of the holocaust? It's sorta haunting to hear that, huh? I love Madeleine's version.
I remember hearing this and thinking "there's no way Billie Holliday did a Leonard Cohen song." Normally I can't stand it when modern singers try to sound like Billie Holliday, but as somebody I know said, she just natrually sounds like this.
@renixe I saw her a few months ago and her phrasing really drove me mad, I thought she must be drunk. Shame, becasuse her records are brilliant and I really love her voice.
@renixe Madeleine Peyroux likely sees herself as a jazz artist who happens to be best known for some very successful covers. And, she likely wants to approach vocals in the tradition of some of the most famous jazz vocalists, that is, that the human voice is another instrument and it should be constantly exploring in and around the melody just as you hear the pianist in this piece doing. She's taking risks live and taking you along for the ride.
I like her big ass, it's nice, but her voice is awesome!

I'd love to hear her and Cohen doing this together. Did that ever happen. anyone?

She's spectacular! Love her phrasing even more live; it's imperfect but true, like the lovers in Leonard's song.

Something didn't quite square with me with this rendition. She's elongating every word to the point is almost annoying. (did she get a brownie)?
Cos I have her cd and is beautiful.

seems heavily influenced by billie holiday, one of the most expressive vocalists ever. check out a video, you'll hear it.
