You are right in that Lincoln primarily fought the Civil War to preserve the Union. That was not a bad thing. His pro abolitionist views were very real, and when the South fell, he implemented them.Fredrick Douglass was an advisor to Lincoln. He viewed blacks as human beings. It's funny that at one time, Republicans were the Liberals.

@Igman2020 I'm an Obama supporter, but you're wrong about Lincoln. Blacks had equal rights in the immediate years during Reconstruction. The Klan and politicians sympathetic to their cause eroded their rights away. By the 1920s up until the 60s, blacks were treated as second class. That had nothing to do with Lincoln. His abolistionist views were strictly enforced in the aftermath of the Civil War. He was a politician. Not perfect, but he was a true abolitionist.
